Johnson had a superb physique, he obviously took his training seriously, but looks a natural athlete.
He looks about 5'10" in the photo, but he could have weighed 185lbs at the time. Fighters of his era didnt go anywhere near weights.
Apparently fighters of that era swore by push ups as a staple form of exercise.
A mate of mine is a PT instructor in The Royal Marines. He says that the single best exercise are push ups.
He says if you do nothing else apart from 100 push ups a day, correctly and at a decent pace, you will maintain a reasonable level of fitness.

What ever we say about the bodies of yesterdays fighters they could go 15 rounds bairing in mind the these days you see a lot of hug fests from round 7 onward that is quite a feet. I think I remember reading about a fight befor they had a round limit that went over 100.

Archie Moore did 250 press ups a day, and he said it developed his 'big punching muscles. With his KO record you would have to give him some credit.KO Atrist wrote:Johnson had a superb physique, he obviously took his training seriously, but looks a natural athlete.

Think about it though, if you weigh as I do around 200 lbs, that's a lot of weight to be pushing on what is equivalent to a bench press, but uses a lot more muscles.
I did 100 press ups a day for about 2 months a few years back, and knocked some bloke who grabbed my missus' muff out with one shot. Now maybe he was a pussy, I got lucky, or maybe it was all those press ups.
push ups and chins... you cannot go far wrong with those two exercises....KO Atrist wrote:

Guys like Sam Soliman, Erik Teymour hardly ever touch weights and are in superb shape and incredibly strong...
I remember last year Erik jumped on the bench press for the first time in a couple of years and knocked out 6 reps of 100kg at bodyweight of under 80kg....and this was after a full boxing session....

If I was locked in solitary 24/7 I think I'd manage a few press-ups too.
I find press-ups one of the best exercises that there is for upper body strength. When I trained a bit more regularly I could get up to 60 or even 70 in one go. After being a lazy sod for 6 months I'm back down to 30-35 again. :(

I always found squat thrusts pointless, the only time i've done them seriously was to see if i could beat Amir Khans effort on superstars, and i did.Ding_Ding wrote:You mean Squats as in 'Squat Thrusts'?Loftgroov wrote:Squats, press-ups, and sit-ups is all you ever really need to. The "core" exercises.
I do squats with light weights, as i've had some serious knee problems in the past and its a good exercise for improving leg muscles

Yeah, but if he came out, he wouldnt do his push ups.Rocky Balboa wrote:Kostya Tszyu is currently doing around 500 push-ups a day, but feels this is not a lot for him.
Charles Bronson does around 2000 a day in the slammer. He was only meant to be inside for six months and now he's never coming out!
He is better of inside.

this thread is very hard to post on without sounding like some closet Julian Clary
Neri... i reckon the arms come from chin ups and dips... great for the biceps and triceps respectively
