Haye Sparing

Post by josh fg »

I'm sure everyone has seen it covered that David Haye has got really high quality sparing for the Fury fight. He has Deontay Wilder and Mariusz Wach. Both are hungry up and coming fighters with very impressive futures ahead of them and getting good quality sparing such of this shows he's taking the fight seriously.

It does strike me however that both fighters are arguably better than Tyson Fury. Do people agree with this assessment, and furthermore why do you think Haye is getting, what I'm sure is expensive sparing like that, for a easier fighter. He seems to be sparing like a up-and-coming fighter with better training than fights. Is he really worried about Fury, do you think he wants to see how good they are for future, or do you think he sees this fight as a brake in training for a bigger fight down the way?

Thoughts welcome.

Would it really be that expensive to get these guys over for a few rounds of sparring? I would imagine both guys would relish the opportunity to spar with Haye and money wouldn't really be the driving force behind their decision.

Haye always seems to spar 'tough'

Makes sense really. Prepare against arguably more dangerous fighters than your actual opponent.
For Audley he sparred with Tony Thompson for example. Not only is Thompson a southpaw like Aduley, but he was much better too!

Also gives Haye an insight in to what Wilder has too.

He's a pro. Train hard, fight easy.

Haye has been largely inactive so I wouldnt be cutting any corners so fair play for getting the best sparring available. I hadn't heard Wilder was helping out though.

Yeah Wilder certainly seems like he will be a big draw soon. I wouldn't be surprised if that factored into his thinking.

It's hard to know where Haye's career is going at this point. He seems to be largely interested in higher grossing fights that don't look to give him that much more prestige. But ambitious sparing is certainly in interesting sign and I'm hoping he might be hoping to fight more regularly. That's why I was interested in others opinions of what ambitious sparing might mean.

The worrying thing is they both my knock him cold! Wilder might have to step in if Haye gets knocked out for the 10 count...or more.

Can you be suspended if KTFO in sparring?

Wach is a good choice for sparring in the run up to a Fury fight, both are big gangly giants. Haye will have little interest in fighting Wach for real anytime soon, i'm sure of that. Nowhere near enough interest or money in it.

Wilder on the other hand is a very interesting choice, perhaps Haye does have one eye on the future here? I read they sparred some years back so obviously know each other. It would be good to get some information on how their sessions are going.

Fury is quicker than the one dimensional Wach and less raw than Wilder.

Fury's output and ability to keep out of range will define the fight. Wilder and Wach provide neither.

you cant put a price on the experience of sparring haye and the likes of wilder should see this as more valuable than blowing away fighters inside a round like audley harrison just a thought but with this specific sparring who would it affect most if tyson came out a southpaw which he proved he is more than capable of against rogan

Neither of those fighters are as good or as big as Fury, they also don't throw as many punches as he does. I'd say Fury definitely has the better sparring for this fight, bringing Cunningham over to spar with him.

Wilder and Wach are at least close to Fury's size, so I think they'll be useful in preparing Haye for dealing with such a large opponent. However, as others note, stylistically they diverge from Fury (e.g. they rarely throw body shots, fight in close, or throw combinations other than jab-straight right), and in my view they are less similar to Fury than Cunningham is to Haye.

However, Cunningham also lacks Haye's great speed, power, and move then explode tendencies, while White and Sprott may be even less similar to Haye than Cunningham is. That's how sparring is though; you prepare with opponents who are similar in important respects to the person you will fight, but there are invariably differences too.

They're ranked in the top 5 in the world so it's going to be hard to find many fighter better than either man to spar with.
and both have pretty unique styles, i've never watched a 6'9" man fight the way fury does and not many have hayes quick explosive in out style, so you're going to struggle to find a perfect match

but i'd say both guys have probably brought in as good sparring as you could realistically expect.

For sure, a free flight, hotel and couple weeks holiday with some beloved boxing mixed in and meeting haye camp, I imagine the salary to be low on the list of reasons to accept the invitation of sparring

That's one of the things I most like about Haye. How he prepares for fights. It's the same with Groves aswell. When he was preparing to fight Degale he was sparring Andre Dirrell! I reckon that helped him a lot. Id be curious to know who they'll have lined up for Groves in prep for Froch. I cant think of many fighters who have the same sort of attributes as Froch does TBH.

Yeah, Audley gave Haye stick saying Thompson was a poor mans Audley and that Thompson put him down. If they sparred a ton of round and Thompson put him down once, that's nothing to cry about, Thompson has proved his quality

I'd bet on Wilder if he were fighting Fury. I'm not as familiar with Wach, however. Wilder has already sparred extensively with Wladimir Klitschko to help him prepare for Wach. According to Deontay,

"I became the head sparring partner. I did 45-plus rounds with [Wladimir]. Sometimes, everybody would be ready to spar, but it was just me. The work and the intensity and the excitement of the sessions was great. I mean, we were just going to war in there, and sometimes, the guys would be ready to spar. But it was me and Wladimir doing all the rounds because of the intensity in the ring."

http://ringtv.craveonline.com/blog/176045-wilder-

Wilder also says in that article that Wlad told him after the first day of sparring, "You're the fastest heavyweight I've ever been in the ring with" and by the end of camp, "Deontay Wilder is the greatest sparring partner I've ever had."

Maybe he's just bragging, but the quotes are almost a year old now -- I'd imagine Klitschko would've spoken up had Deontay been putting words in his mouth.

Anyway, I'm guessing that Haye wanted such high-level sparring partners so he could work off whatever rust he has on him prior to the fight. This is a guy who's fought only five rounds since his loss to W. Klitschko over two years ago.

I have no idea what it would cost, but Deontay Wilder was already a sparring partner for David Haye in 2010 (I believe in preparation for the Audley Harrison fight). It's possible he wanted to take the job for the experience but it seems less likely considering he's already done it before.

I think its safe to say that he wasn't motivated by money.... Or at least not the short term return of getting paid as a sparing partner.

It wouldn't be like the Klitschko's to set the record straight about what happened in sparring with Wilder, that could easily cause a war of words, which isn't really their way of doing things.
