Schmeling was between a rock and a hard place; I think he did his best considering his predicament. His autobiography is a great read.

I agree, fascinating read. I was getting pissed off with it early because he kept name dropping famous socialites he hung about with in his early life but then as Hitler takes power these people start to disappear........ Fascinating man and quite inspirational as he never gave up and had to rebuild his life twice from literally nothing.

Anyone ever see the documentary "Joe Louis: America's Hero Betrayed"?

I find it to be a really biased view, especially when it came to Schmeling.

The historians and pundits wanted to say how big of an injustice it was and how racially motivated it was that Schemling, who forty years before was branded a racist and a nazi, was given the job with Coca-Cola and Louis, who was bigger than life, didnt. All I could do was laugh and roll my eyes when I heard that cus I was yelling at the tv: "Coca-Cola was looking for EUROPEAN representatives you dumb asses!"

Joe Louis: America's Hero Betrayed.....by America. Both Louis & Schmeling were used for propaganda reasons then offloaded when they had served their purpose. Schemling was denigrated for being a racist but he supported Louis in later life (did he not pay some of Loui's funeral expenses?) and also had a Jewish manager that he refused to sack.
