Which fighters said hit them the hardest ?

Post by Controversial »

A comment on another thread prompts this question

From what I've read these are who these heavyweights said hit them the hardest.

Joe Bugner - Earnie Shavers but Ron Lyle deserves a mention.
Ken Norton - Earnie Shavers or George Foreman
George Foreman - Ron Lyle
Riddick Bowe - Herbie Hide
Pinklon Thomas - Mike Weaver
Hasim Rahman - Lennox Lewis or Sanders
George Chuvalo - Mike DeJohn, George Foreman or Mel Turnbaugh
Larry Holmes - Earnie Shavers first, then Gerry Cooney then Ken Norton
Evander Holyfield - Riddick Bowe

Anyone got any others?

Why limit it to heavies?
After his second-to-last career fight, against Sixto Escobar, bantam Pete Sanstol told the press that Dom Bernasconi was the hardest puncher he had ever met. "There was dynamite in both of his fists!"

(Sanstol fought most of the very best bantams of his day-- 1926 thru 1935--and was never knocked out in 100-plus bouts. Thus, his word carries some weight.)

Oliver McCall: "Bert Cooper. Left hook. That was the hardest punch that I ever felt and that I had to overcome. It felt like a truck had hit me. I never got hit by a truck but it felt like if a truck would have hit me."

Boxinginsider.com: Who else was up there? Lennox?

Oliver McCall: "No, Lennox wasn't one of the hardest punchers that I - Buster Douglas hit me harder than Lennox did. Right hand."

Boxinginsider.com: How about Tyson? He has to be up there?

Oliver McCall: "Tyson's right there too. Lennox would probably be about fifth."

Boxinginsider.com: You sparred hundreds of rounds with Tyson, right?

Oliver McCall: "I guess I sparred more than 300 rounds with Tyson and he never knocked me down once. But I put him down once. We had a hell of a battle every time. That's why he paid me $2,000 a week."

Boxinginsider.com: You've never been knocked down, true?

Oliver McCall: "I've never been down sparring or in a fight, amateur or pro. In fact, I've never been shook up. I can take a helluva shot."

ESB: Joe Bugner, in a previous interview you said Ernie Shavers was the hardest puncher you faced. Who gave your most gruelling bout?

Joe Bugner: Ernie came very close to defeating both Muhummad and Larry for the title and he knocked me out in two rounds in 1982. But the biggest beating I took was from Ron Lyle in 1977 who I fought instead of Foreman. He was one of those tough dudes that just kept coming. It was the only time I thought to myself, what am I doing this for. Going the distance with Ali, Frazier, was not near as bad. I had busted ribs, a sore jaw, you name it. For weeks I was hurting.

You are spot on, Seamus. Sibbo broke his nose. I went to the fight, and have a copy on DVD, even though it was banned by the BBC.

Sibbo is one of my favourites.

Tell me, Seamus, are you Irish or of Irish descent?

Actually I'm Anglo-Irish with a Protestant father and Catholic mother which means I'm totally mixed up. A friend said I was entitled to mail myself bombs. I'm exaggerating a little, but I was born in Chicago, not Belfast, Gaelic roots run deep though.

Wasen't Minter still taunting Sibson even after the 2nd knockdown. Seems I heard something like that on the BBC Shortwave back then.

Holmes and Norton

Post by Cojimar 1945 »

Holmes may have said that Norton was a good puncher but based on an interview of Holmes that I read he said the only guys he fought who hit harder than Tyson were Shavers and Cooney. Norton is generally not regarded as a particularly devastating puncher anyway.

Norton's autobiography says Shavers definitely hit harder than either Foreman or Cooney.

Q: You fought Lennox Lewis, but you mentioned to me that Dennis Andries hit you the hardest. What were the circumstances?

Justin Fortune: We were just sparring. We used to work in the same gym in London. Dennis hit me with a f**k'n shot; it was just unbelievable! Next round, I put his teeth through his lip. But, Jesus, he hit me the hardest I've ever been hit. F**k'n, it was with a headgear on and 16-ounce gloves. So, I have a whole new respect for Jeff Harding, because Harding fought him with ten's and went three times 12 rounds.

SI: Who hit you the hardest during your career?
Foreman: Ron Lyle. He hit me so hard, I had to watch it on film to know I was hit.

RM: Which opponent has hit you the hardest?

Evander Holyfield: Riddick Bowe. It was in the back of the head, and every time I look at the tape I wince.

RM: Who have you hit the hardest?

Evander Holyfield: Buster Douglas. It was just that he was getting ready to hit me and I timed it perfectly and it was like a shot out of a shotgun. He went down and that was it.

RM: What's worse, a Mike Tyson right or a Mike Tyson bite?

Evander Holyfield: It all depends. The thing about the bite was that I didn't expect it, so it hurt that way. But the right hand can knock you out cold. I would rather take the bite than that right hand.

PM: Who has tested that chin the most in the ring, who has hit you the hardest?

Wayne McCulloch: Morales is a good puncher, but Hamed is the strongest fighter I’ve ever faced. The hardest I’ve ever been hit was by Victor Rabanales in 1994. For about five seconds after he hit me, I was literally sitting next to my wife on the couch watching television (laughs). I saw stars, seriously. He almost took my head off, but I won the fight. That’s the hardest I’ve ever been hit.

He was beckoning at Sibbo "come-on, come-on". Tony then hits him with a massive left hook, and the rest is history.

Malinowski:Wladimir. He's better than he showed?

Phil Jackson: "Yeah, yeah, most definitely. He is. Something went wrong...somewhere down the line. To me, I still think he can be the champ - WBC, WBA, IBF, any one of the champs, you know, because he has that power. He has that power."

Malinowski: What else does he do well?

Phil Jackson: "Jab. He's not a mover like his brother - his brother moves extremely well. He wears you down with that power, man."

Malinowski: More powerful than Lennox Lewis would you say?

Phil Jackson: "Yeah, most definitely. Yeah."

Malinowski: "What hand? Right hand?

Phil Jackson: "Both. Both. Put it this way...if it would have been him in there when his brother fought Lennox Lewis, I think he would have dropped Lennox Lewis. I honestly do. I think he would have dropped Lennox Lewis - if he would have been in the best of shape."

Malinowski: How do you know Wladimir punches harder than Vitali? The general opinion out there is that Vitali is the more powerful puncher of the two brothers?

Phil Jackson:"Because I sparred both. The older brother - he's a good mover, a good combination puncher. He has power, don't get me wrong. But not the kind of power that his brother posesses. Wladimir's punches - you could feel it. But the older brother, like I just walked through him. He hits you with more good combinations than his brother does. But to me, the younger brother punches harder than the older."

Pinklon, how would you compare Mike Tyson's punching power against Tommy Morrison's? And how were you able to overcome your problems outside the ring?

Pinklon Thomas: There was no comparison. I can tell you that Tommy Morrison hit me so hard that he raised my leg up. At that time, I swore to God that his gloves were loaded by his corner it was just that hard. I got tired of being tired. Drugs beat me, but I fought back and won. Today, I am clean and work to help others.

Hi Pinklon,
I was wondering who was the hardest puncher you ever faced, and was there ever an opponent that gave you fear before a fight?

Pinklon Thomas: I would have to go with Mike Weaver. Weaver was a very good puncher and hit me so hard with a left hook in the second round, that I pushed him off of me because I didn’t want to get hit that hard again from him. As far as fear, not really. But going into the Berbick fight, I was not 100% physically or mentally. I didn’t fear him, but feared it would be a hard fight because of my situation.

You faced some big punchers in your day. Who was the best?
Pinklon Thomas: Mike Weaver

Did Wayne really say Hamed was the strongest, I'm curious to what he actually meant, from what I saw of their fight it didn't look like Naz was throwing Wayne around or really wobbling him with shots...Naz was on the backfoot for most of the fight...any suggestions??
