Aber ich möchte meine Karriere auf dem Gipfel beenden und mit meinem Rücktritt nun den Weg freimachen für meine Nachfolger", begründete der Box-Weltmeister aus der Ukraine seinen Rücktritt in einer am Mittwoch verbreiteten Erklärung seines Managers Bernd Bönte

Witali Klitschko, der seine für den kommenden Samstag in Las Vegas geplante Titelverteidigung gegen den US-Amerikaner Hasim Rahman wegen einer im Training erlittenen Verletzung absagen musste, wurde am Dienstag im kalifornischen Inglewood am Knie operiert. Dort wurde von Dr. Neal Elattrache ein frischer Riss des vorderen Kreuzbandes behoben. Klitschko hätte mindestens sechs Monate pausieren müssen, allerdings war ihm vom Weltverband WBC nur eine dreimonatige Frist für einen neuen WM-Kampf eingeräumt worden. Ansonsten wäre ihm der Titel aberkannt worden"

I think it means that because of injuries he has kept postponing fights, he would rather leave at the summit of the world than keep trying to get his body right, he feels it is unfair on other fighters to keep having to postpone fights

Vit Klit is hanging his gloves up. "In recent times I've unfortunately had more injuries than my ring commitments can stand. The decision... is very difficult. But I must end my ring career and with my retirement (?) make way for people to follow me, " said the boxing world champ from teh Ukraine in explaining his retirement to his manager Bernie Bonte on Wednesday.

Vit Klit, who had a scheduled fight against Hasim Rahman this coming Saturday before he had to stop training, had a knee operation in Inglewood on Tuesday. Blah blah no idea. Klitschko's got at least 6 months out, something about him having three months to defend his belt. So he vacated the title.

"Heavyweight Vitali Klitschko retires. "In the last times I had to struggle more with my injuries than with my opponnents. The decision to retire was a hard one. But I want now to retire when I am on the peak of my career and I want to give now my succesors the chance." His manager, Bernd Bönte, gave this notice tio the press.

Main reason was that after the surgery it was told that Vitali has to make a minimum break for 6 months.

Yeah i would have though so too, i like the line i read where he says it is time to step aside and let a successor take over, like he has ruled and dominated with an iron fist for many years :P

Leaves a bit of a bad taste in the mouth, Klitschko tore Lewis apart for retiring and not giving him a rematch now he has quit without ever having a meaningful title fight and with what will no doubt go down as one of the worst Heavyweight title reigns in history. I have also read reports that Klitschko could have gone ahead with the fight the knee injury was not that serious but he has opted for an operation and retirement instead.

Do you think any of this had to do with the Klitchsko dream on being champions simultaneously.

If Rahman would be champion proper, chances of both Klitchsko's getting a belt each would be remote, if King gets his way (lets hope he does) and unify the titles, the chances are the champ would have to fight one of the bros first (with Klitchsko Jnr #1 IBF and Vitali bound to be #1 WBC). However, it will still only mean one brother can be champion, and not the two.

I bet this retirement keeps getting postponed by three months at a time.

If the injuries are true then his body is just breaking. The guy's a unit and he's got an admitted history of juicing. It's not good for longevity.

I guess he'll still be around for Wlad and when Wlad gets his block knocked off next he'll be able to triumphantly sail through the crowds for 'Revenge of the Brother 47' and make a fat wedge of cash.

But he's just not viable any more - promoting him for an unspecified rescheduled date in the future is a nightmare. And without him having a title which champion is going to want to get dicked around like that?

Retiring is a good thing but his defining moment was a loss, and that ain't too good.

if he is genuinely so injured that fighting is a danger to his long term health, then fair play to him.

but, it does go down as one of the worst heavyweight reigns of all time. Corrie Sanders and Danny Williams.

I am no historian, but I cannot think of a worse state for the HW division at any time

Yes, but you had Larry Holmes as THE champ. This era Klitchsko was supposed to be THE champ.

I suppose Leon Spinks has to mentioned somewhere, and also Ingemar Johannson. However, these beat great fighters to win the title and were impressive in doing so - Klitchsko never beat any great fighter.

I was going to say Spinks. I feel sorry for him - people say he wasnt a good boxer - the man won olympic gold for Christ sake.
