Burns has titanium plate fitted

Post by whiskey »

Just seen an x-ray pic that Eddie Hearn tweeted, looks a really nasty break indeed. He has confirmed that a titanium plate is to be fitted.

A friend had his broke in two place, had plate fitted and now talks with a slight lisp. It's a serious injury for a boxer.

It was likely a hair line crack , then the punches busted it bad.

Decision aside, Burns showed massive balls to carry on.

I think he will be out until 2014 now, and inactivity leads me to think perhaps the right move is 140lb when he comes back.

He was fine in the first round, but a combination of injury and lethargy made him lose his shape and his focus was fuzzy.

Abraham suffered a horrendous broken jaw against Miranda in the summer of 2008.

He needed 20 odd screws and 2 plates fitted - and has fought constantly since, so hopefully burns fully recovers and resumes his career afterwards.

He was fine in the first round, but he looked nervous, came out and threw a big combination to start, that's probably down to wanting to prove people wrong after Gonzalez. The plan was, or at least seemed to be, Crolla on the Froch-Groves undercard, Crawford at MSG in February then a unification fight next June. Like you say, he won't fight again until next year, I'd like to see a Beltran rematch, because I do believe he has the beating of him, then step up to 10st, but he could easily stay at lightweight.

I assumed Crolla was the plan as well but in post fight interview Eddie stated he would of been out again on the 14th December

I do find it odd that people are blaming Burn's losing on this injury. Isnt the purpose of boxing to punch your opponent in the face aswell other places? A broken jaw can be a by product of that. It's not like Beltran got lucky. He hit Burns repeatedly and broke his jaw. There was no luck to that.

A lot of Beltran's work was done on the inside with Burns on the ropes not throwing back, he wouldn't normally just sit there and cover up, he'd throw back and move away, but to get hit on the jaw, especially by the left hook, must have been agony, whenever there was distance between them, Burns was comfortable, in close he couldn't risk being hit on the jaw, so he couldn't throw back, allowing Beltran to easily outwork him.

I think his point is that the reason Burns had to allow him to outwork him was an injury caused by Beltran's punches. So it's irrelevant how the fight would have gone without the injury.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7S4GmQqHdo

This video is doing the rounds, and got to say it does look like the punch that might have started the crack off in his jaw bone.

He is talking fine in between rounds 4 and 5 and is even smiling at Beltran at the end and arguing a bit with Nelson in the corner - but I think that could be the shot that put the hairline crack into him - and subsequently the swelling began.

It wasn't round two me thinks. Obviously I cannot say that 100% but i feel that 8 minutes on from round two his face would have been ballooning already.

So i think it was round 4 like the vid suggests when the prob started.

And Beltran was already starting to take it to Ricky before that point.

What would happen if a fighter did that, or had a titanium plate put in his hand?

Didn't Vidoz have one in his face and Coetzee have one in his hand?

Ricky showed a lot of courage, it must have been really painful; Beltran won the bout.

I don't think 140lb would be wise, I get the feeling he'd get bullied around.

I agreed with this. A nasty injury and takes a lot of courage and heart to carry on with it, no matter what round it actually occured in.

However, regardless of what part the injury played, I thought Beltran won the fight with more (and better quality) work.

Hopefully Ricky will recover from the resulting operation well enough to be able to resume his career and hopefully give Beltran another shot at some point down the line.

The old adage don't left hook with a left hooker springs to mind... and what was he doing throwing lead left hooks to the body? Crap tactics.
