As often as I've watched it, I can't understand the decision. ( 9-6 ) Ellis. Their were a number of close rounds, so Valan had to have given every one of them to Ellis. Floyd once told me that Valan had gone out to dinner with Ellis, prior to the fight. If he did, I doubt he bought his own dinner.
I think the powers that be in boxing at that time, simply wanted new blood at the top of the heavyweight division. You can't fool a knock on the chin though. Don't put the outcome in the ref's hands if you can help it.
Still waiting for a reversal on that one.

Although I have been a big fan of Floyd Patterson since childhood, I have no problem with the decision. The fight was scored on a rounds basis, and therefore the knock down/slip had no influence on the scoring (no 10-8 round). Several rounds are close, but Valan gives no even rounds. If he had scored just two rounds the other way, the result would have been a victory for Floyd. The real problem is Howard Cosell´s commentary, which is very much is in his friend Floyd Pattersons favour. That gives people a wrong impression of the fight.

How on earth could none of the rounds be scored even. You are the first person that I can remember that thought Ellis won. I have Dundee's
book, I only talk winning. He doesn't even mention the bout in his book.
I guess he was too embarassed to bring it up. Sure, Cosell was for Floyd. He was one of the most popular sports figures of his time. So what.
Floyd did all the damage. I'm sorry. That decision was a grave injustice.

Hi Bill
I am just saying that Valan scored the fight 9-6 in rounds, with no even rounds. There would have been much more controversy if he had scored is lets say 6-5 with 4 rounds even.
Try and watch the fight again with the sound turned of. I have always been a fan of Floyd and never fond of Ellis, but as I say I have no problems with that decision.
This is one of the bouts that are brought up when the talking is about the commentator influencing the viewers to believe what they are told and not what they se.

Patterson - Ellis
I thought the Quarry fights were almost as bad. Their is no way in hell Quarry won the first one. The 2nd fight , because of the 2 knockdowns
I can grudgingly accept. Floyd got too far behind , though he came on like gangbusters. Why were the fights held in California ? I don't think Jerry gets the nod in New York. Another thing. Why was Floyd always so vulnerable in the early rounds? All the knockdowns were always early in fights. I think that vulnerability endeared him to the public, however. They had an underdog they could pull for. Cosell always said Patterson goes down early & often, but he has tremendous recuperative powers.
Same thing happened with Ellis. He came on strong. I wish he was still fighting. He was a guy you just wanted to stand up & cheer for. God bless Floyd Patterson.

Here I agree with you! No way did Quarry win the first fight. The second was closer, but I would go for Floyd.
If the fights had been in New York on a round scoring basis, Floyd would have won both.
I don´t know why Patterson was so vulnerable in the early rounds, so was Felix TRinidad by the way also. Always made their fights entertaining.

I watched the Ellis v. Patterson fight again yesterday. Even if I tried to lean towards Floyd in my scoring I came up with exactly the same score as Valan 9-6 Ellis. Floyd is simpy not throwing enough punches. The Ellis slip looks like a knock down to me, but the canvas was slippery. Floyd slipped three times during the fight.
