i think the only fight of him on tape in his prime is vs maarciano.
- even though it lasted 2 rounds, mathews impressed me, he had great boxing skill. he held his hands somewhat low, but had superb hand speed and grear combinaations and solid counterpunching skills.
he was the top light-H contender but went to heavy cause he wasnt getting a title shot . IMO i think he could have beat mills or maxim w/e one was champion.
did maxim and mills duck matthews???
mathews vs maxim would have been a good fight
- itss too bad because mathews-marcino fight ruined matthews career and he went downward after that. he was trying to get a shot at walcotts title and if he bet marciano he would get it.
jack hurley his manager also ruined matthews. he took all the credit answered all the questions. He basically owned matthews.

I don't think Mills and Maxim ducked Matthews. I think Jack Hurley's intention all along was to make as much money as possible with Matthews, and that meant fighting at Heavyweight. I agree that Matthews would have had an even chance of beating either of those two.
I disagree with the point that Hurley ruined Matthews, he actually made Matthews. Before Hurley got him, he was a jab and runner and was not a particularly big draw even in the NW, despite beating Al Hostak. Hurley got him to sit down on his punches and move less, and ultimately turned him into the fighter who was one win away from a Heavyweight title shot.
