Took a drive up to Santa Monica this morning to watch the premier of Alan Swyder's documentary "El Boxeo." Rick Farris comped me and Maria with guest passes. At these boxing events in LA. I see the usual cast of ex fighters: Armando Muniz,"Gato" Gonzalez,Bobby Chacon,Frankie Duarte,Carlos Palomino. It was good to see old pals like Jeri and Randy De La O and Rick's wife Monica. Tiger Smalls made it up there with his son Prince and Tiger's wife and young daughter.

My take on the documentary might have been even more focused on the Mexican fighter. I'm talking about the Mexican national. LA. at one time was a mecca for the local Chicano fighter against the Mexican national. Like some of the comments by the ex Chicano fighters in the film-the crowd whether Chicano or Mexican national always pulled for the native Mexican.

I don't want to get into the obvious facts and records of those fights and careers, but the bottom line is if you erase the Mexican(national and Chicano)from the boxing scene, the sport is finished in this country. Back east the interest is dead. There are no American heavyweights who are making an impact. Mexicans are keeping things going in the boxing world,at least in this country. They are the fighters, the fans at ringside, and the ones shelling out the money to watch it on pay TV. Pay For View would go out of business today if the Mexican boxing fan didn't want to shell out his dough. That's why Floyd Mayweather is getting 41.5 million dollars. He can thank the Mexican audience.

I don't think boxing fans back east are interested seeing two Mexicans fight each other, but eventually that's what it's coming to. How many more fights does Mayweather and Pacquiao have in them?By the way ,who's going to watch PacMan fight Timothy Bradley?

But in a way I'm glad it's this way. Maybe the big time promoters will feel a hit,but they've been part of the problem by diminishing the local fight cards and venues and the all the fights we'd used see on the major networks each week. But Mexicans will find the fights on TV on the obscure cable channels. Mexicans don't go out for pro football or the NBA. Baseball maybe, but still not that much. Soccer is there, but I can bet you the soccer stadiums will be empty the night "Canelo" Alvarez tries to wrest the title from Floyd Mayweather.

Great to see you post Randy, Hope you are feeling well and you certainly look good at the film premier. I am so happy to hear from you guys and Rick, extolling the "fruits of labor" from this magnificent film. I certainly hope to see it on the big screen after it makes the rounds at several film festivals. Even if a network carries it on their station would be good enough for me and my friends. Hope all is well with all my West Coast Friends !!! Charlie Norkus Jr.

The Fence

"It's not one of those bars that they go in and shoot everybody,"I said half jokingly to my granddaughter's husband.
"I hope not,"he laughed.
My wife was going to go to Tijuana the day of the Mayweather/Canelo fight to attend our granddaughter's baby shower. I figured it would give me a good excuse to go down there and take in the fight. Her husband was at our place waiting to pick up my granddaughter from school.
"You say this bar is in Playas?"I asked.
"Yes,near the bullring by the border fence."
"I haven't been to Playas in years,"I said.
"It's built up nice,"said my granddaughter's husband.
"I remember when they started to develop things along the cliffs. They built a lot of nice restaurants and hotels."
"There are a lot of nice places now."
"But back then they didn't take in to account that the cliffs were susceptible to erosion just like on this side. When the first big storm hit everything was washed out to sea."
"Oh,they probably knew that. They put big rocks there now and built a wall."
My granddaughter's husband and my wife were watching a novela on our television set.
"What time do you have to pick up Cindy from school?"I asked.
"I'll leave in a few minutes."
"I don't think there will be a bar in San Diego that will show the fight,"I said."They want too much money."
"In TJ it's like 20 dollars. They'll be all kinds of places."
I could see the novela was ending. My granddaughter's husband grabbed his keys from the table.
"I'll get you the name of the place and call you tonight,"he said.
"I'll probably watch the fight in town at one of the Caliente Sports Books. Besides I can place a bet there."
As he went out the door,I was glad that he decided to put my grandaughter in a school up here

"El Boxeo" to screen at the World Boxing Council Annual Convention . . .

President Jose Suliman announced today that Alan Swyer's "El Boxeo" will be screened at the 2013 WBC annual convention, which will be held this coming November in Bangkok, Thailand. This is the first time in the 50 year history of the WBC that a film will be the highlight feature of the event.

Rick, only due to our continuous dialogue via phone leading up to this do I realize how you worked your ass off for this event. I'm ecstatic that it went so well. I know you're not the type to put yourself out in front but in this case you deserve the plaudits. Well done, dude. And like Charlie said, I can't wait to view the film.

Free TV

"Did you watch the fight last night?"I asked Ed the bartender.
He had just opened up. He drew me a draft and turned on the TV to the pregame show.
"No,I didn't want to pay for it. How 'bout you?"
"I saw it in TJ. My wife was going to my granddaughter's baby shower down there,so it gave me an excuse to go down there and watch it."
"I read where Mayweather ran away with it."
"He outboxed him pretty good."
"There was some controversy about that female judge scoring it a draw,"said Ed putting my beer on a coaster.
"She's the some broad who voted for Bradley against Pacquiao."
"I don't trust Las Vegas refs,"said Ed.
"There's been a lot of strange happenings in Las Vegas."
Ed turned down the volume of the television. There was the usual panel giving their opinions on the day's football games.
"Was there a lot of celebrities at the fight?"asked Ed.
"A lot of boxing people, but not that many Hollywood types. White people aren't that interested in Alvarez."
"How about in TJ? Were the bars crowded?"
"I found out that they showed the fight in Mexico for free. Everyone and their mother was watching it. My wife even said she saw it at the baby shower."
"I bet the Mexicans were disappointed that Alvarez lost."
"To tell the truth I didn't hear many Mexicans say that Alvarez had much of a chance. As the fight dragged on there was less and less enthusiasm."
"I wish they would of let us have the fight for free,"said Ed wiping off the counter. The place got empty after the Alabama game."
"I heard something about how Pay TV wanted to give Mexico a present on their independance day."
"It's their independance day?"
"Yes. They'll celebrate it all this weekend."
"They have less and less to celebrate down there."
"If nothing else it gives them an excuse to have a party."

So What's Next?

I finished taking my morning swim in the pool and climbed up the stairs to my condo unit. Inside sitting on the couch with his shoulders slouched was my granddaughter's husband. He was reading a letter. At the top of the letter I saw the word"Delinquent."
"Did you watch the fight at that place in Playas,"I asked him.
"Yes.I got there around five. There was hardly anyone there, but by the time the fight started in was full."
"After I got my painting framed I walked up the street to Revolucion. I was hungry so I stopped at Margarita's restaurant and ate. Ruben then walked in and said he was showing the fight at his bar across the street. So I went there to watch it."
"Did Margarita go to the baby shower?"asked my granddaughter's husband.
"No.Maria said her sister didn't go."
My granddaughter's husband continued to read the letter.
"Pretty disappointing fight,"I said.
"I don't think Canelo will ever lose again. He'll learn from his mistakes,"he said still reading the letter.
"I can't understand what his corner was thinking."
"He'll learn from his mistakes."
"Canelo's feet are terrible. I don't care how powerfull your punch is,if your feet can't put you in position to land ,everthing is meaningless."
I could see my granddaughter's husbands eyes were at the bottom of the letter.
"I still think Pacquiao would beat him,"I said."He keeps coming at you with his feet under him.He could pressure Mayweather. Mayweather knows that."
"Maybe that's why he didn't fight him."
"They should still try to put that fight together,"I said.
My granddaughter's husband picked up his cell phone and started to dial a number that was on the letter. We didn't talk about the fight anymore after that.

If It's Broke Don't Fix It

When Ken Norton came out of the Marine Corps in San Diego and began his pro career, the locals had something to cheer about again since the days of Archie Moore. Norton had the body of an adonis. His first fights were at the San Diego Coliseum.Comparing his opposions' physiques with Kenny's was like looking at the before and after pictures in a diet ad. You could say Eddie Futch was handling him very carefully.I never saw Norton fight in the amateurs, but to see him as a pro,I thought he could have used more amateur experience.

A few fights into his career Norton was matched in the semi main of the Luis Rodriguez/Rafael Gutieerez undercard. His opponent for his match was a Puerto Rican named Pedro Sanchez.Sanchez looked like someone I could handle. Norton spent a lot of time in Burke Emery's North Park gym in San Diego.Ken looked terrifis, but was battling a stamina problem. I think it was psycholgical. That's why he wanted to get guys out of there fast. After five round he started to fatigue.

I used to pal around with a good amateur heavyweigh . He was from the northwest and was in the same stable with Boone Kirkman. We used to bounce around the various training spots in San Diego mostly to get a workout. A few weeks prior to Norton's fight with Sanchez,we stumbled into Burke's gym.Norton was there and was sparring with Bossman Jones. It looked like Norton wanted a different look and was complaining to Futch. Burke knew my pal and asked him if he'd like to spar three with Kenny. My pal said his left shoulder was hurting and backed out. Well I'm thinking we came up there to workout so I guess his left hand was good enough to jump in my face.

My buddy turns to me and asks if I'd get in there with Norton. Now this was before Norton had seen the likes of Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, but stiil I got a chill when I was offered my sevices. I was hoping Futch would turn me down.He looked me up and down and said I was OK in his book and told me to put on my gear. Broken Wing put his arm around my shoulder and told me that Norton would take it easy with me knowing that I was inexperienced. I asked him how Norton knew that.

Well Ken Norton never cruised along with any of his sparring partners. I saw this later on.I saw it within the first seconds Futch yelled time. I stood right in front of Norton and then he slammed his left jab into my face. For the lack of a more imaginative term,I saw stars. Norton had broken my nose. The blood was running down my chest. Everyone jumped into the ring. Futch pushed a towel against my face and tilted my head back. I felt like a baby. Norton didn't seem sympathetic. The bleeding finally stopped. My pal put his arm around my shoulder again and said that I should move my head next time.

Later on I sparred with Norton again. This time I wore the head gear with the mask. After that I knew that boxing would take a back seat to my pursuit for a college education.

Once in a while I touch the left side of my nose. I run my finger up and down so I can feel the little sunken area.At the time it hurt like hell, but changed the course of my life. Thanks Kenny for showing me the way. Rest In Peace Big Guy.

It was a fun event to organize, and pretty easy. A combination of great people and a great film. This was the first fundraising event in the 15 years of the Retired Boxers Foundation where the organization actually made money. We also establsihed a solid foundation for a great organization, with mega support from the film industry. We'll put in order what the WBHOf & CBHOF have compromised and confused, with a more fun and historically correct association. -Rick Farris

Everthing Is Beautifull

"I saw that Jose Torres passed away,"I said to Burke.
I knew that Torres had stopped Burke in six rounds in New York back in the 50's. It was said that Torres broke his ribs.
Burke was playing the video poker machine at the back of his bar. He turned his head to me and smiled. I waited for a response, but after a pause Burke just turned his face back to the video game.
"Burke, you deserve to be in the California Boxing Hall Of Fame. I'll see what I can do for you,"I said.
Burke was touching the screen with his index finger. After finishing a hand,he quickly began another game.
"That would be wonderfull,"said Shirley walking towards us.She was Burke's longtime girlfriend and half owner of the bar.
"Burke's a legitimate candidate,"I said.
Burke was still engrossed with the machine.
"It would be good if you bought a couple of tables and invited friends and family to attend,"I said.
"I'm sure Burke's could get plenty of people to go,"said Shirley."How much are the tickets?"
"50 dollars a piece."
"Here's 50 now ,"said Shirley pulling out the money from her purse.
"You can wait on that,"I said. "I have to check with my friend Rick Farris, but I'm sure Don Fraser would OK everything.I'll get back with you."
Burke hadn't looked at us. He was still touching the screen rapidly with his finger. Shirley smiled at me and walked away.
"Oh,I won't go,"said Burke turning his face to me.
I couldn't help see the old scar tissue over his eyes. There was so much of it,it made his face droop. I know a lot of fighters like that who don't like you staring at their scars.Burke stopped playing the game.
"You know I fought that son of a bitch Calderwood over in Scotland and as soon as I got cut,the referee stopped the fight. I could have gone on,but the hometown referee stopped the fight."
Burke wound up his career fighting semi mains at the old San Diego Coliseum. After retiring from boxing,Burke trained fighters in San Diego. A lot of the boys were from Canada were he was from. After fighting dried up in San Diego,he tended bar and when the owner had had enough,he bought the place with Shirley.
"I heard what Burke was saying,"said Shirley walking back to us."I'm sure he'll go once he knows how happy everyone will be."
Burke turned his head back to the video game. I walked out the door with Shirley to my car.
"Burke's had a tough life,"she said.
I went up to LA to attend the California Boxing Hall Of Fame ceremony. Burke was inducted, but he didn't attend.

At Auction

There's a slew of programs on television where people bring in their junk that's been lying around the garage or in the attic and bring them to places to get appraised or to sell. We've all seen Pawn Stars and I have to hand it to that family who runs that hock shop. They're making a mint, but not so much about the stuff they sell, but it's the network rights is what's bringing in the coin. I heard Rick Harrison, who sold his idea to the History Channel, say that all the other pawn shops in Vegas are taking the economic hit. He must have been pretty bright to see ahead to sell the idea to television. Along with his father ,son, and nephew the show is very entrtaining.

The other night I'm watching it and this guy brings in an old postcard with Jack Johnson's signature on the back.Rick is interesteed, but he wants to get the John Hancock authorized so he brings in his buddy from PSA(the autograph experts).

His buddy brings along with him a real signature of Johnson along with some kind of x-ray device and a maginifying glass. Sure enough,it's the real deal and he says that Lil' Arthur's signature is very valuable and rare. Well the guy that brought it in wants top dollar because the expert says the postcard is worth a thousand bucks at auction. The guy who brought it in of course wants a thousand. . Rick shakes his head and says that he'll have to put it in a frame and so forth and that will take time,so he offers 5.They settle on 6 and shake hands.

You might want to know why I'm running this by you. Well,it's because i have a Jack Johnson autograph. At least I thought I had one. A real one. I bought it on eBay. Shame on me.I looked at the real one on the Pawn Stars episode and my Jack Johnson was probably signed by Jack in the Beanstalk. I won't tell you what I paid for it,but at least I have enough pride not to pawn it off on anybody else.

Critical List

"Ed,you watch much UFC?" I asked Ed the bartender.
It was a Wednesday afternoon. Champ's was empty except for me and Ed.There was some sort of golf match on the TV. The sound was off.
"I'm starting to watch more now,"he said leaning his elbows on the bar.
"I was at a friends house the other night. He had it on his set. This guy Jon Jones was fighting."
"I saw that.He fought against this Gustafsson fellow."
"Pretty brutal figfht."
" I read where both boys went to the hospital afterwards,"said Ed.
Ed turned on the tap from the sink and began washing glasses.
"UFC is not as artistic to watch as boxing ,"I said.
"No,but there is more blood."
"Can't say that Mayweather fight the other night sent anyone to the ER.A big fight like that and not much action.More big bouts like that and boxing will be put on the critical list."
"I know what you mean,"said Ed picking up a glass."Mayweather could have gone to the Louvre afterwards."
