Joe Gallagher's prediction

Post by lefty »

For the Mayweather vs Canelo fight... I know Joe is a highly regarded trainer but I dont agree with his opinion on Alvarez. He say's Alvarez is just a bigger version of Hatton and im not buying that at all. Alvarez is a definietly a more technical, educated pressure fighter than Ricky was. For what it's worth I still believe Mayweather will win. http://www.BS.com/mayweather-c ... ons--69519

I looked again at Alvarez' record and he's really only been at world title level for 2 and a half years and Trout and the old Mosely are by far the best on his record, Floyd will win at a cantor - the size and strength issue is the only factor and Mayweather will have the bases covered.

(Ricky Hatton was a very good technical infighter as well, he applied a lot of skill when he went about his work; Gallagher has made a pretty good comparison).

Hatton and Alvarez arent the same though. Hatton was good once he got on the inside but he used to eat a lot trying to get inside. Alvarez on the other hand is a lot more educated about his work when he's trying to get off his punches. Also he doesnt tend to stick on an opponents to the degree that Ricky did. I think their styles are different personally.

Hatton's foot work was significantly better than Alvarez's and if you try comparing work rate...well...best not bother there...

That's not the argument though. It's that Joe is saying they're the same kind of fighter when it's pretty clear they're not.

Hatton was an excellent boxer and people forget just how good; Alvarez is very good and improving and Mayweather is on a different level altogether.

That's sort of my point. Hatton would work hard every round, Alvarez seems to have the stamina of an old man and is unable to do that, as a result Alvarez is more deliberate in what he does and takes breaks during rounds something Ricky rarely seemed to...

I know it's not quite the point but Hatton's pressure was part based on his high work rate, Alvarez's pressure is based on his solid defense (which he seems unable to smoothly transition from)

Ok I get what you mean now. To give an example of what I mean. I couldnt see Hatton boxing a composed fight against Trout like Alvarez did. I know it would of never of happened because of the size difference and so on but im sure you know what I mean.

Ricky boxed very well at times, he could box to corner instruction, he would have gotten nowhere if he were just a tear away.

I thought Trout beat Canelo purely on workrate,i know Alvarez was landing the better and more hurtful punches but im not a fan of his workrate,he,s a quality precise puncher and he,ll be a lot busier against Mayweather im sure but his fighting in spurts is probaby his biggest weakness and he cant wait on openings from Floyd because before he knows it the 12 rounds will be up

Mayweather on a SD but im sure i,ll have it wider than one of the judges

Sometimes you know your stuff. But sometimes you leave me wondering if you have ever watched a boxing match or if it is just articles records and hearsay you base your opinions on.

There's not many fights I saw of his when he boxed a composed fight though. It was all gung ho. In the earlier stages of his career he got away with it because he was very fit and he had a good chin but later on in his career after balooning up in weight inbetween fights and also the wear and tear catching up with him he wasnt able to get away with it to the same extent. If his pure boxing and defensive abilities were that good he wouldnt of left Billy Graham to join Floyd snr.

He left Graham because his hand problems got so bad.

Here's Alvarez's fight with Trout http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ss4t3UwsdoA .... if you're telling me that's the same way that Hatton used to box then you're blind.

He also wasnt happy with his "defense" though. Thats why he joined Floyd snr in an attempt to learn defensive skills from the guy who coached Floyd from the beginning.

It didn't work though, Floyd Sr more or less finished him off with the diabolical training for Pacquaio.

Im not saying it did work but that was a big part of why he went with Floyd snr.

Ricky did well against Floyd. A less zealous referee would have seen his do even better. It wasn't a bad performance at all.

I wouldnt really compare Alvarez's work rate to Ricky's .... actually i wouldn compare both of them at all ...Ricky was always on his toes moving punching then smothering on the inside making the other fighter work hard just to get some decent shots off... it would take 2 exceptional fighters to break thru Ricky's smothering tactics .... Alvarez isnt as light on his feet however does posses more power..however Alvarez hasnt got the quickest of hands... i always say Mayweather is older now and he may have lost his reactions, but he never does and Alvarez will struggle immensely the only way he can win this fight is the body shots early and stay about for the later rounds where his size might be able to takeout he lighter man.. but all that said and done i cant see MW being troubled much and TBH i think Ricky will do better than Alvarez will do IMHO....

To be fair I never said he didnt. I was purely saying that Hatton and Alvarez are different stylistically. They both like or liked to come forward but Hatton was more gung ho and risk taking in his approach and was more there to be hit so to speak. He came at guys at 100 miles an hour and they didnt have time to breathe or think in the ring. That was all my argument was to be fair. Ricky did do well against Floyd. :TU:

Sounded a bit like you were suggesting that he worked inside by using his face rather than feet. Ricky had great footwork IMO.
The other bit was to expe due to his 'Floyd snr finished ricky' remark'.

Sr did, Jr didn't. He was more or less on the weight for the Pacquaio fight 3 weeks out, 10 days before the fight a super featherweight knocked him on his arse in sparring. I agree that he put up a good performance against Mayweather though and could easily have lasted the distance if he wanted, but instead he kept coming and went out on his shield after giving Mayweather trouble in the first 5 rounds.

People always went overboard with hattons 'underrated boxing ability' in my opinion. Basically gets credit cos he could outbox a few domestics and Ben tackie. When he stepped up it all went out the window except five rounds vs the wooden, easy to outbox uranjo
