I understand what he wants to see columbo but to imagine that all Floyd does is run and duck and slip is wide of the mark, the undercard had enough excellent bouts and the ones that put the most physical effort in and hurt the most probably got paid the least (Theopane v Cano).columbo wrote:If you want the things you list though why dont you go and stand outside a club on a saturday night?TheCobra wrote:Agree totally. Purists can stroke their beards all day, but I much prefer thrills over skills - hence I enjoy watching Cotto, Marquez way more than the people like Mayweather that outpointed them.
I've been looking at some America 'general' sports forums and the fight cropped up on a few, and several complained it was tedious to watch and glad they split the PPV with friends etc. Many said they would choose UFC over Mayweather every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
That to me is a bad sign indeed.

Mayweather just takes all the drama out of it, someone mentioned that in commentary. If you aint got drama, then you don't have an entertainment sport, not for me anyways. Boxing should be 50% technical and 50% entertainment.
I don't see bravery in what Mayweather does, I see it as the perfect defensive gameplan a little bit like a shitbag way to win a fight, each fight gets massively built up and sells millions and yet the majority of them are a pretty tedious let-down.

It takes a ton of balls to get into punching range, draw a shot and then counter with a combination and move away without getting hit - all the greats did it - because it's very, very difficult to do and takes bravery - Alvarez had stopped 30 men - that's a heavy puncher, one wrong move or a slip too far and Floyd could have got cracked very hard, but it takes no bravery?TheCobra wrote:Mayweather just takes all the drama out of it, someone mentioned that in commentary. Everyone who gets into a boxing ring shows bravery, you know that, I know that, but relative to other fighters, no I don't see bravery in what Mayweather does. It's cagey, negative and frustrating.palooka wrote:It takes a ton of balls to get into punching range, draw a shot and then counter with a combination and move away without getting hit - all the greats did it - because it's very, very difficult to do and takes bravery - Alvarez had stopped 30 men - that's a heavy puncher, one wrong move or a slip too far and Floyd could have got cracked very hard, but it takes no bravery?TheCobra wrote:Mayweather just takes all the drama out of it, someone mentioned that in commentary. The vast majority of boxers who get hit hard and often don't do it through choice; they get hit because they do not have the skill to avoid punches and punch back; having less skill does not equate to bravery.TheCobra wrote:Everyone who gets into a boxing ring shows bravery, you know that, I know that, but relative to other fighters, no I don't see bravery in what Mayweather does. Re: anti climax , Mayweather v Alvarez
117-112 Mayweather for me,maybe a bit kind to Alvarez to be honest but Floyd was different class last night he took Saul to school, for me it was one of Mayweathers best performances ever,it might have lacked drama but anyone who follows boxing comes to expect that from Mayweather
I just appreciate how he made a very good fighter in Canelo seem ordinary,1 dimentional,1 paced and a lack of immagination, superb
What i will say though i do wish Floyd would force it more,i really cant remember the last time he landed a real full blooded punch, besides the Ortiz fiasco it must be Ricky Hatton who was last rattled by Floyd
Canelo was a bit dissapointing though,he didnt empty the tank IMO

Re: anti climax , Mayweather v Alvarez
Nope but if he were to throw more punches and try to be a bit more entertaining, if he tried to win a fight by landing more than 8 clean punches each round, if he tried to hurt the other man, then yes that would show more bravery definitely as it would require more risk-taking to win in a more entertaining manner. He's the boxing equivalent of '1-0 to the Arsenal'.if he let himself get hit more, would he be brave then?
Re: anti climax , Mayweather v Alvarez
It was Canelo who showed little bravery - he could have gone for broke with Floyd stood in front of him, he hardly tried after the 5th round and attempted to counterpunch Mayweather in the first 3TheCobra wrote:Nope but if he were to throw more punches and try to be a bit more entertaining, if he tried to win a fight by landing more than 8 clean punches each round, if he tried to hurt the other man, then yes that would show more bravery definitely as it would require more risk-taking to win in a more entertaining manner. he outlanded Canelo 2 to 1, if you think Floyd's not brave then god knows what you think of Canelo.TheCobra wrote:Nope but if he were to throw more punches and try to be a bit more entertaining, if he tried to win a fight by landing more than 8 clean punches each round, if he tried to hurt the other man, then yes that would show more bravery definitely as it would require more risk-taking to win in a more entertaining manner. Jesus, are people really this ignorant to Mayweather's brilliance?
After a few rounds Maywethaer was pretty much holding the centre of the ring. For much of the fight he stood right in front Alvarez.
The man is a boxing genius and defused a massively dangerous fighter in Alvarez like he was inept child. Need we forget, Alvarez was over 11 pounds heavier than Mayweather come fight time... I think that is brave enough!

Mayweather picks his punches near perfectly. He threw and landed plenty of punches on Alvarez, which clearly discouraged him from taking it to Mayweather.
Quality over quantity.
There isnt a serious and credible question mark over Mayweather's bravery. To suggest otherwise is simply ridiculous. Enough boxers dont demonstrate ring generalmanship, Mayweather is the master.
Re: anti climax , Mayweather v Alvarez
Mayweather said in the post fight interview that on the morning of the fight he woke up weighing 146lbs. Canelo entered the ring weighing 165. That tells you everything right there.liamlion wrote:X 2.palooka wrote:It takes a ton of balls to get into punching range, draw a shot and then counter with a combination and move away without getting hit - all the greats did it - because it's very, very difficult to do and takes bravery - Alvarez had stopped 30 men - that's a heavy puncher, one wrong move or a slip too far and Floyd could have got cracked very hard, but it takes no bravery?TheCobra wrote:Mayweather just takes all the drama out of it, someone mentioned that in commentary. I take your point. I did however hear John Rawling say on the allegedly commentary that Mayweather's fight night weight was 153lbs. Personally I cant see him dropping 4 lbs after the weigh-in (he weighed in at 150 lbs).columbo wrote:Mayweather said in the post fight interview that on the morning of the fight he woke up weighing 146lbs. Re: anti climax , Mayweather v Alvarez
Danny Garcia dropped half a pound in 10 seconds so with those scales anything is possible.
Re: anti climax , Mayweather v Alvarez
My point was not to be condersending as I agree that was the only way he could win and I would assume that the game plan was to take floyd out of his zone, however when it comes to fight time the plan can be perfect but it can stay in the fighters head and other factors come in to play.I do not agree that his career will now be tarnished.stevedoc wrote:the only way canelo could win is by being the agrresive fighter taking chances and making floyd uncomfitable from the start so "getting stuck in "isn't stupid advice it's the only way canelo could win ,so try not to be so condersending to other when in fact the advice is sound .80/20 wrote:dalcumly wrote:I thought the fight was like the World Cup final , a boring event due to how technical the match up was. I think as the bigger man Alvarez should have forced the fight from the 1st bell and I realise that would have played into Mayweathers counter punching style. But he was being paid a lot of money ,and his gameplan just didn't work anyway. How could he hope to outspeed the fastest boxer on the planet. He should just have got 'stuck right in " and chased Mayweather all over the ring- if he gets beat, he gets beat.
As it is , his performance has tarnished his reputation for the remainder of his career.
A performance against arguably one of the most gifted fighters the sport has seen will not tarnish his reputation and your comment about getting stuck in , if you have boxed you will know that its ok from outside of the ropes to make comments like that however often a very different ball game when the guy is in front of you.

Re: anti climax , Mayweather v Alvarez
Just another thought about Mayweather. At welterweight I think he'd have beaten Leonard ,but funnily enough a welterweight Tommy Hearns would have had something Mayweather couldn't have coped with even though Leonard beat Hearns. ( Frazier gave Ali a beaten ,then Foreman destroyed Frazier , and Ali destroyed Foreman!!).
A lot of good valid points but I stick to my original thoughts - Mayweather is superb , but boring, Canelo let himself down. Get the chin down, hands up , bob and weave as you rush in and take a few - but as someone once pointed out NO ONE can run faster backwards as you can going forwards(especially when you hit the ropes !!) , and there'd be a few haymakers getting thrown. For what it's worth that is the only way to beat Mayweather, and of course be a 6'1" Tommy Hearns with a right hand that took out Duran with one fell swipe !!!
Of course it's not up to Mayweather to take chances ,it's up to the opponent ,because they all know by now how he's going to fight. I can't help but remember Gavin Rees against Broner. He was well beaten and stopped , but is not in the same class as Alvarez. Alvarez could take one thing from Rees though - its a big beating thing found in the middle of the chest.

It was bollocks to watch, It was like watching a nimble thief mug a fat drunk.
I know he has talent but his raid tactics turn me off, I fell asleep.
It was more move than box,its supposed to be the reverse.
PS Garcia fight was junk also.

Re: anti climax , Mayweather v Alvarez
I said when the fight was announced there could only be one winner. I hoped Alvarez would find a way but deep down I knew he couldnt. Mayweather is virtually unbeatable and I cant see anyone comming close to getting a win over him at the moment. Just now age is not a problem for Mayweather but maybe in two years he will go into decline. Maybe Alvarez could beat him then, but there is no glory in beating an old man past his best. I just cant see a really big fight out there for Mayweather now, so maybe he will quit unbeaten. He has so much money, why go on.
Re: anti climax , Mayweather v Alvarez
i enjoyed the fight immensely, i really did.
The only thought i had watching the fight was that with 4 rounds to go i just thought Canelo should have gone for broke knowing that he was losing badly.
Easier said than done like but thats just my thoughts on it.
Mayweather is a genius though i don't think there is any doubt about that.

That's exactly what Mayweather produces and I thoroughly enjoy watching them too. Not every fight can be a slugfest. Canelo will come again, he was overawed by the whole situation I think. Madness to think he has only recently turned 23.Mensa07 wrote:Not an anti climax for me, I enjoy watching Floyd's masterclasses.
