Caught Cold: Classic/Historic First Round KO Losses…..

Post by kal.majeed »

……that are either avenged or previously bested (or both).

Most folks know about USA’s Jack Dempsey’s only career stoppage loss – a first round (caught cold) KO 1 loss to USA’s Fireman Jim Flynn (later avenged – KO 1) - but here are a few others not so well known.

Note: Some still believe that the first bout is a 'fix'; if so, why did they expose it with a rematch?

In a rematch of a terrific distance battle (won by Celebron), USA’s Fritzie Zivic catches underrated/overlooked 1933 National AAU Welterweight champion and professional WW/MW contender, Italy’s/USA’s Billy Celebron cold (Zivic KO 1 Celebron); it is the only stoppage loss Celebron’s career; Celebron later twice battles future 2-time world MW champion, USA’s Tony Zale, knocking down Zale in their first encounter (D 10) and then solidly defeating Zale in their rematch (PTS 10).

Celebron’s career ends shortly after suffering two decision losses to future world MW titlist, USA’s Ken Overlin, who later twice each battles USA’s Billy Soose and USA’s Steve Belloise in distance bouts that all end via controversial verdicts.

In a rematch of a splendid distance battle (won by Maxim), USA’s Curtis Sheppard catches underrated/overlooked 1940 National AAU Middleweight champion and future world LHW champion, USA’s Joey Maxim cold (Sheppard KO 1 Maxim); it is the only stoppage loss of Maxim’s career and again decision bested by Maxim in a third encounter with Sheppard; Sheppard is later stopped by future world HW champion, USA’s Jersey Joe Walcott and loses two decisions to future world LHW champion, USA’s Archie Moore.

Bonus:

In his 9/18/1963 WBA FLW title defense, champion Thailand’s Pone Kingpetch is caught cold (KO 1) by underrated/overlooked future 2-time world FLW champion, Japan’s Hiroyuki Ebihara; it is the third stoppage loss of Kingpetch’s career and subsequently avenged via a split decision; Ebihara is later twice decision defeated by future 2-year WBA FLW champion, Argentina’s Horacio Accavallo, who is first/only stopped by 1960 Olympic FLW bronze medalist, undefeated FLW contender, Japan’s Kiyoshi Tanabe (who is later forced to retire because of a right-eye detached retina that consequently causes a loss of vision in that eye).
