"I've been in the business for forty years " says Jerry Izenberg "And there are lots of people who can stop a room if they're in the right town Joe Namath in his prime can stop a room in New York but not in Boston.Michael Jordan can stop a room in Chicago but they wouldn't recognize him in a lot of places. The only two people who could walk into any room , at any time was Joe DiMaggio and Muhammad Ali. And Ali does it everywhere he goes."

i disagree. especially ali was both a kind man
and someone who substantially hurt other people.
joe frazier was by all accounts i have heard and
seen a brave, honest, straightforward man. making
him an uncle tom and gorilla, thus putting him at the
mercy of a heated up black crowd of that time was
utterly, utterly unfair.

do i think ali was kind? yes. but complex as well.
being a muslim and having his share of affairs does
not help either ...

Il Duce wrote:Very Good Point 'That One',

But 'beauty' is only skin-deep.

Wasn't it Cassius Clay that called many of his black contemporaries N*GG**S, and Gorilla's
and Uncle Tom's and other derogatory names.

No, he did not believe 'Black was Beautiful'. He only believed he was 'pretty'.

Though it was all in fun and part of the 'pre-calculated promotion', he made some bad jokes
about Sonny Liston.

As for being a 'Cult Figure', when it was time for the 'White Liberal Media' to hire Muhammad
Ali as a their spokesman,,,,,,they gave him D-Con 'Roach Spray'.

Yes, the White Liberal Media played Muhammad Ali for 'ratings', but wouldn't let him in
their 'so called House'.

When they were done with him, they sent him packing.........

Is that why he was paid fifty million dollars for his image:

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2006/apr/13/usa.sport

Is that why he became a spokesperson for one of the world's most famous fashion houses in the world?

Or a spokesperson for iconic American brands like Cadillac and Gatorade?

Oh, cult figures don't become Sports Illustrated 's Sportsman of the Century:

Or one of Time magazine's Twenty Most Influential Americans of All Time.

Il Duce- I owe you an apology. I have said Muhammad Ali has met five presidents. I was wrong. He has met six; Gerald Ford , Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W, Bush, Barack Obama, and I'm sure your hero, Ronald Reagan:

I don't think he sacrificed class by hamming it up with Ronald Maximus at the White House, do you?

.........

Calling Ali a cult figure is like calling Star Wars or Gone With The Wind a cult film.

As for your Dempsey comparison: Nobody knew who Dempsey was in 1916. The idea that kids everywhere wanted to be like him in 1916 is laughable.

I don't think he donned a roach outit:

That seems to be another swing and a miss or a desperate effort to besmirch a good and decent man.

Does anyone else find it ironic that Il Douche has spent thread after thread after thread bashing Ali for his stance during Vietnam but then lauds Jack Dempsey as a hero despite ducking service in WW1? I just find that funny.

I think he was supporting his family and wife.

BTW, I see that Il Duce likes to point out that Ali had four wives but neglects to point out Dempsey had multiple wives, including a prostitute, with whom it was rumored he pimped her out.

I read Dempsey's biography. He came off a good guy so I"ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

I read Dempsey's autobiography. He came off a good guy so I"ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

The same wife that he was seperated from and who was working at a brothel just 40 minutes south of where I live now? Dempsey dodged service, there is no doubt about that. Go look through WW1 draft registrations. The most common filing for exemption is support of the family. You are talking about an era when the majority of Americans still lived in a rural setting with family. Going by the norms of the day 90% of the population could have claimed that exemption. Instead Dempsey went out and had his friend Jim Dougherty get him a fake job at a naval shipyard (another way you could avoid service) which he never worked at. But boy did he make sure that camera men where there to take photos. Unfortunately Jack forgot to remove his shiny new designer shoes and REAL work men immediately took notice and cried foul. Irregardless Dempsey's excuse rings hollow. He wouldnt have gotten any closer to a battlefield than Ali would have and he would have still been able to earn a supporting income for his family (if that were really his intention) by boxing just as countless other fighters did during the war while still serving their country. The situations are similar to a degree which is why I find it hilarious that Il Douche forgives one and spends countless hours harping on the other. Hypocrite much? Thats besides the fact that he doesnt seem to know much about Dempsey or that era at all to begin with (other than the fact that Dempsey was white, which seems to make all the difference in the world to him).

Never posted on You Tube,

Very touching photo's.

Unfortunately, these 'Awards' were never given to Cassius Clay or Muhammad Ali when he was
a competing athlete.

Some of the greatest directors in history never won an award for their films. It happens all the time. Despite producing nearly 1000 paintings Vincent Van Gogh sold only one during his lifetime. Recognition often comes after ones body of work is completed. Although that's kind of silly for you or anyone else to pretend that Ali wasnt recognized for his accomplishments during his career.

He was recognized:

And he was given the key to many cities after his upset of George Foreman.
