off topic - england vs argentina

Post by TheRiverCityHippy »

how good was that game, usually internationals are boring affairs but that was like a old fashioned F.A cup tie - end to end stuff.
riqueleme (sp?) the argentinian no.8 oozes class, what a player he is, but fair dues to england they really took the game to the argies and even nicked it in the end. great game.

Yes, and he did set up the Owen goal, by falling into him. Had he not pushed into Owen, Owen wouldn't have conected.

Seriously though, he is very very poor. Remember him 2 years back for Villa.

I wouldn't have him in Wales' squad.

Anyone care to comment on the Aus V Uruguay WC qualifier that's happening as we speak per chance? Didn't think so :x

Well let me fill you in - we're 1-0 down thus far and should lose. Last time we went to the WC was in '74 and guess what? I still have no idea how we went (I highly suspect we were blown away by every opponent we faced) :D

to be fair to crouch he changed the game for us against villa when he came on, he`s decent on the deck and notice how much room the other strikers get when he comes on, defenders are attracted to him because of his size leaving space for others.
a lot of other players in the prem do less than peter but for some reason the boo boys have got after him. he hasnt scored for us yet but his game isnt about goalscoring its about getting defenders nervous.

are you home or away? its a two legged affair so 1-0 defeat in uruguay aint the worst result in the world if you can get them back to australia with a fired up crowd.

It's away

Lat time we had the chance to qualify was a few years ago against someone that I can't recall now. 90,000 people crammed into the MCG to watch us snatch defeat from the jaws of victory :D

I thought you lost in the last World cup qualifiers to Uruguay, I'm almost certain of it - sure it was on Sky.

Didn't Ireland knockout Iran in the playoffs last time?

yeah i thought it was a south american side that beat the aussie`s at first because i know they`re trying to bail out of the oceana group and into the asia group to avoid the south american play off situation, but something just tells me it was iran they went out to - maybe it was the irish i was thinking of.

Terry Venables was in charge in 1998, when they lost to Iran.

I remember sitting in a bar in Gran Canaria watching Uraguay beat Australia in 2001. Don't know why I remember this, I can't rememeber what I had for breakfast but I remember that. Even worse that I should have been listening to what my girlfriend (now wife) was talking about.

England game was good.

But... I also watched Uruguay VS Australia. Oh dear... Australia were very poor. The commentator on SBS was a complete prat. Never wanted to commit or rock the boat with his comments. At the beginning of the game it was very clear; AUSTRALIA NEEDED AN AWAY GOAL. By the end of the game he was saying "Australia have done a good job." Good job?! They didn't get their much needed away goal and they bloody lost! Also Mark Schwarzer rushed for a ball and a Uruguay player so obviously took a dive, so as they are showing every bloody angle possible on the replays (each one looking more and more like a dive) the commentator says; "Some refs would have given that, Schwarzer was lucky." WTF? Just tell it as it is! Motson would have been screaming "DIVE, DIVE!!!".

Anyway, rant over. Not too hopeful Australia will qualify now, plus Vidmar and Chipperfield are crap players.

Still... good job I'm English!

Everyone I've asked didn't know the answer to this, so I'll ask you lot:

WTF was England-Argentina played in Switzerland? Ok, playing at a neutral venue just about plausible, but a bit OTT for a friendly, but in Switzerland? Ok, it's about as neutral a place as you'll find, but they were playing Turkey at home yesterday.

I can't figure it out :o  :-?
