Info on "world titles" before the WBA etc.

My knowledge on this, as with all matters is shockingly sketchy.

When you have, for example, Louis' World title fights, Ali's early world title fights, Marciano's etc. how did the term actually come about? Who sanctioned them? Because there were a few knocking about - the NYSAC, NBA, were one of these dominant and their world title simply became regarded as THE world title?

And if this is the case, how did the transition to the WBA in the 60s come about?

I remember reading in a Boxing history book that at times the New York Commission and some organisation in Europe had conflicting ideas on who was world champion at the time. Although this was mostly during transitional periods particularly in the Heavyweight division, i doubt there was much debate when the likes Of Louis, Marciano etc were about and reigning. Not like today where you have the WBS swear blind that Mitch Green is the Heavyweight Champion of the World 8)

I can only remember one fight, it was Emile Griffith vs Chris Christensen.
