World Series stars turn professional...
A big blow to the World Series Boxing as Ukraine's multi titled Vasyl Lomachenko and Oleksander Usyk, both London 2012 Gold Medal winners, sign with Top Rank...
Re: World Series stars turn professional...
I am suprised he didn't do the APB but I hear he wants to win a world title very quickly, even faster than Rigondeaux did. Lomachenko is starting out fighting a 10 rounder. Now that's starting where he should as a 2 x Olympic gold medal winner. No starting off fighting the bum of the month club like other decent pros. Roy Jones jr also started off like this except he boxed scheduled 8 rounders for his first 6 fights before moving to 10 rounders.Tarquin Tarpaulin IV wrote:A big blow to the World Series Boxing as Ukraine's multi titled Vasyl Lomachenko and Oleksander Usyk, both London 2012 Gold Medal winners, sign with Top Rank...
Re: World Series stars turn professional...
Did the AIBA not parade Lomachenko as their prime APB signing.
I am confused he cannot sign as both as a pro and APB boxer or can he.

Re: World Series stars turn professional...
Maybe he didn't sign a contract with the APB and only verbally said he will do it but who knows when the ABP will actually start. They say this year but...?mike222 wrote:Did the AIBA not parade Lomachenko as their prime APB signing.

TopRank also signed Oleksandr Usyk who won gold in London.

I think I read that you can not have any affiliation with other professional organizations at allmike222 wrote:Did the AIBA not parade Lomachenko as their prime APB signing.

Re: World Series stars turn professional...
Of the 10 gold medallists from London, 6 have now turned pro:
Zou Shiming
Luke Campbell
Lomachenko
Ryota Murata
Alexander Usyk
Anthony Joshua
Of the remaining 4, 2 are Cuban and future defection is a possibility. The others are Russian Egor Mekhontsev (status unknown) and Kazakh Serik Sapiev who has signed up for APB.
Have only one confirmed gold medallist sign up for APB is a bad sign. Joshua and Lomachenko would have given APB instant credibility.
That being said, APB does have a bunch of other medallists from London, including:
Evaldas Petrauskas (Bronze)
Fred Evans (Silver)
Esquiva Florentino (Silver)
Yamaguchi Falcão (Bronze)
Clemente Russo (Silver)
Tervel Pulev (Bronze)
Zou Shiming
Luke Campbell
Lomachenko

I can only speak about two of the 6 medallists you've mentioned without looking at some Olympic footage.yu265545 wrote:Of the 10 gold medallists from London, 6 have now turned pro:

Fred Evans lost his way a bit in the WSB, looked lacking in confidence and I would suggest he didn't have pro promoters scrambling for his signature.
Clemente Russo has what some would call 'a successful style' but I defy anybody to part with their money to watch him cling on for 3 rounds.

Re: World Series stars turn professional...
After AIBA announced the APB signing of Lomachenko during the Olympics, Lomachenkos father quickly announced Vasyl only had signed a letter of intention and no real contract. It is a big blow to AIBA that most gold medalists (specially Lomachenko and Joshua I would say) have chosen the traditional pro circuit.scallum wrote:I think I read that you can not have any affiliation with other professional organizations at allmike222 wrote:Did the AIBA not parade Lomachenko as their prime APB signing.

Way more potential to make bigger name and fame in Traditional Pro Circuitlocoxelbox wrote:After AIBA announced the APB signing of Lomachenko during the Olympics, Lomachenkos father quickly announced Vasyl only had signed a letter of intention and no real contract. Re: World Series stars turn professional...
Another one bites the dust for APB. Bronze medallist Y. Falcao has signed a pro deal with Golden Boy. This one is particularly embarrassing for AIBA given that he was supposed to be the co-headliner for APB's first exhibition matches in Brazil last month. I guess now we know why that did not go through.
I thought that Falcao would stay with AIBA with the Olympics in Brazil. Not a good sign for APB.

Re: World Series stars turn professional...
Maybe some rumors I got a few months ago from ex AIBA/WSB fighters was true when they said money was a big issue as many were not getting what they were promised.
Re: World Series stars turn professional...
Egor Mekhontsev has now signed a pro deal with Top Rank. Thus, 7 out of the 10 gold medallists from London 2012 have now left AIBA to turn pro.
Will Sapiev be next after the World Championships in his home country?

According to this article, Sapiev has retired from boxing due to injury?
