When did boxing become a pure meritocracy? The biggest fights (and paydays) have always gone to those who entertain rather than those who have supposedly earned their shots the old-fashioned way (whatever that means). Khan is in with a shout of fighting Floyd because he is consistently in entertaining fights, has s skill set that is more than capable at world level and will guarantee a huge global audience for the fight.loaded_gloves wrote:Good post Palooka, but I should point out that I am not a Froch fan by any means. Onto your points:
Kotelnik was frequently referred to as the 'worst champion in boxing' at the time. Not of all time, but during that particular dismal era when he held a belt.
In top level terms Malignaggi is nothing at all, I stand by that remark, however yes as you say a very brave man and has done well for himself. But he is simply not a top level fighter and never has been.
Maidana has been dropped by the diabolical Victor Ortiz and lost every round to Devon Alexander. It is more an impressive result that Amir Khan beat him, rather than that MM himself was beaten.
Finally yes, Froch well beaten by Ward, however can there be any doubt Froch earned his shot at the best fighter in his weight class? He went through everyone without ducking a challenge or a dangerous puncher and lost only to Kessler. He absolutely had earned the right to fight Andre Ward.
Khan went through nobody at light-welter and was given a title shot for his troubles. Khan has done nothing at welter and is now angling for an obscene payday versus Mayweather.
It stinks, and it's not biased or prejudiced or anti-British in any way to point it out.

In history? Khan has fought a (faded) Barrera, Kotelnik, Malignaggi, Maidana, Judah, Peterson and Garcia. I'd say that aside from Matthysse, nobody at 140lb has fought consistently near that level. He might be a bit of a fool and among the least intelligent (in terms of in-ring nous) fighters I can recall seeing, but protected? Not for me.
Yes, protected is probably the wrong word, given that he's had his arse kicked badly twice, he's clearly not been protected - however, he has certainly been spoilt with opportunities based on his profile and olympic success.
