Any readers fought or saw Henry Wharton live, as an amateur?

Post by dalcumly »

I wonder if any of you either fought Henry or trained with him at York ABC or Bass St Patrick's in Leeds, while he was an amateur. Also anyone who watched his amateur fights live and can remember details.
Perhaps you would be able to send a PM to me with details, thoughts ,opinions etc.

I trained with Henry as an amateur at St Pats Leeds he was getting ready to box Seymor Johnson aba final. He was very talented as an amateur moved really well looked like floating at times around the bag exceptionally fast. Think he weighed 11st 7 then. Obviously his style changed as a pro. Ask Micky1975 about his amateur back ground. Stopped Ray Close and a shit load of men that went on to be good pro's.

Never seen him box am. Went to pro debut and on from there. Was a bit too young in his amateur days. Off the top of my head, i know he boxed Sven Ottke(draw), Glenwood "The Real Beast" Brown(loss), Cornelius Carr(unsure how many times but I know Henry beat him at least once), Ray Close(tko1). His main rival in the regional aba's was Eric Noi. I know they kept meeting in the Northern Counties in the aba's and I think they both won one or two each. Maybe Macho or someone else from the North West who is older than me will remember those bouts.

I saw Wharton fight at Dewsbury town hall or sports centre and at Leeds town hall, plus made the trip to support him against Benn in London. Eubank turned up at Leeds town hall to wind up Henry's legion of fans, it worked a treat and I recall fans couldn't part with their money quick enough to snap up tickets to see Eubank vs Wharton in Manchester. Eubank even parked a white limo right outside the town hall entrance, so all Wharton's fans would have to squeeze past it on their way out. A brilliant gimic to wind up the fans. How the vehicle didn't get trashed I don't know.

I had two brief spells at St Pats, which only served to convince me I had no right being inside a boxing ring. On one occasion Henry was there training. I wouldn't have made a decent sparring partner for his sparring partners.........

Yes I've got details of his fight with Brown in New Jersey and with John/Cornelius Carr but I must have missed him fighting Ottke. I'll sort that one out with Henry later, and it was a big win over Close.

Without checking his record, did he only lose to 3 guys who went on to be World Champs? There is also the famous Fidel Smith match up which was seen as a terrible robbery at the time

This brings back memories.

I went to see Wharton fight Eubank back in 2010 at the then G-Mex in Manc. Fcuking fantastic night. The crowd was electric. The best Eubank fight I have attended for crowd volume. I'm sure Chris came down on a Harley on a crane that night and the crowd was electric. My hairs on my neck stood on end and it was a fantastic fight. Its funny how you see a fight live and how you see it on tv. On the night live as I remember Eubank won pretty easy on points but to be honest on the night I thought Henry had won the fight. Watching it back on tv later it was a completely different fight.

It was a good undercard too. The late Michael Murray, and Eamonn Loughran who then was the next big thing in another WBO title fight. Loughran won that night but fizzled out very quickly.

In all the fights ive seen live the Eubank and Wharton fight was the very best for crowd enthusiasm
