Look back at some early fights of any monstrous punching heavyweight. Tyson, Lewis, Foreman, anyone. I guarantee there are guys there who stood up to a few shots before going down. It's very common. For all we know, Leo might go on to lose a string of decisions and be a pretty tough guy. You just can't tell yet.

I would hope trainer Tony Sims is thinking he's landed on his feet. Young, strong, looks in great shape, looks the part, talks the part and is only what, 23. Great debut and I guided properly we've a real talent on our hands. Can only get better. For a big 6'5 guy he moves really well too and that's a great asset.

A+.
Negatives - Holds his hands too close together before punching and doesn't tuck his chin in when he comes forward with shots, tended to follow the opponent rather than cut the ring off.

Positives - In shape, strong, relaxed, confident, superb fast accurate jab, excellent accuracy with punches for this stage of his career.

Just needs to get busy on undercards and away from the limelight for the next year or two & given chance to experiment with shots & styles and learn without too much criticism. Nobody is the finished article until a good few years of pro fighting, let alone a heavyweight.

Yes and he won the Olympic gold with raw ability rather than polish, but managed properly he could become a real threat over the next couple of years. Someone has to follow the Klitschkos!

Dead Mouse wrote:You can only draw so many conclusions from this type of fight and you can’t really gauge potential based on opponent so you have to look at the finer things, his balance, physiology, patience and punch picking, which was good, in the main, and points towards a promising talent. As for getting Witherspoon etc. in. Tim made the same offer to Audley, it wasn’t taken up and it was a rare good decision by Big Aud’. Joshua has a really good trainer, Tony Sims, and you don’t need a former fighter sticking his oar in, especially ones who fell just short themselves. Unless we get Tony Tubbs in to work on his conditioning. That’d be a huge stride forward.

Apologies if I’m posting what’s already been said. The early parts of this thread are full of an inordinate amount of bollocks so I just clicked on ‘reply’ before my boxing IQ was lowered to the level of an average non-Adam NOOB. I assume there’s been a coding breakdown and this is actually the Current Scene and I need to go to the Current Scene nee British forum to find some sensible stuff. Or is this it? IS THIS IT?!

I liked what a saw, it can't be easy in your first pro fight. I did like the speed and accuracy, defense needs work on a bit. But that comes with sparring and less nerves.

Also liked the bit of nastyness in his finishing of the fight.

Love it when people pick apart a performance just to sound like an expert. He did what he needed. Looked decent, especially considering he only got into boxing less than 5 years ago. Looking forward to watching him develop. Saying he has no power and no defense is ridiculous as both can be trained.

It's early days yet, jeez, power is the one thing that can be developed later, everything else is more important.
Hearns wasn't a puncher as an amateur.

You can be naturally more powerful than the next man but of course you can train power just like all the other areas (Strength, Speed, Stamina, Agility, Flexibility). Resistance training is proven to increase power.

He looked fine. A bit of lateral movement going back would be nice, but there was nothing to worry about. That fight didn't tell us that he was a future champ, or that he's a bum, just that he did fine on his debut.

As to the "Hughie Fury is going after Rogan etc, why shouldn't Joshua", Fury has had 10 fights, and is being moved much faster than most young fighters. Tyson Fury was 17-0 when he fought Rogan. Why would you throw Joshua in with him on his debut? Boxing is indeed all about levels, and as a debutante, you're at the bottom. Hilarious that people are worried about the opponent getting hurt.

The Julian Jacksons and George Forman's of this world are born punchers (although they still have to be taught at some point), but you can help any fighter make better use of what they have. If that makes sense.

I'm sure he would appreciate it. It would also give him the opportunity to reassess the level of competition, and put him in with Pulev for his next fight (because it's all about levels).

another positive thing about anthony is that he is very well conditioned. he looks muscular and ripped but not freakish like shannon briggs later in his career so his stamina should be good. also while his defense might still be a - right now he did not seem to be shaken at all be the 3-4 flush shots the italian landed. granted the italian is probably not a puncher but it is still a good sign if a fighter is unimpressed by taking flush shots.

he may or may not be a big puncher but even if his punch turns out to be a little below elite level (I don't think it is bad but probably not price's or haye's level) he could still become a champ with his physical and boxing abilities.

early doors but he seems to have a reasonable compromise between fast-twitch muscle and stamina

  ou'd think Tyson would think a little before typing sometimes he's just looking more like an idiot. Maybe should knock twitter on the head for a while.

I thought Anthony put on an entertaining performance for his debut. He kept a good workrate and threw some nice combinations with a hurtful finish to top it off.

I expect a Sexton, Price, Rogan, type fight for his second bout. Then Haye followed by a Klitchsko.

Surely (and don't call me shirley) you can't make any real judgement on 2 minutes of pro boxing, ridiculous.
