Can price still make it?
Can price still make it?
Price is now 30 years old and had two KO losses. that is a bad thing of course but on the other hand the division is not really strong right now and price is very tall, with good athleticism and boxing skills and elite power. he does have shaky defense and chin but still his skillset is a very rare one in the heavyweight. a 6"8 man that can box and punch is not dime a dozen.
wlad had his share of KO losses too (of course he had more success early on too as he was a world champ at 24 but then got KOed at age 26 and 28) but then adopted a more conservative style including some dirty tactics that he learned from steward.
could price do the same and switch to a less risky style of boxing (less combinations, more defense and holding if the opponent comes too close) and become a champion?
I mean the HW division is not exactly stacked right now and with the right coach a guy with price's skillset should still win something.

Re: Can price still make it?
i can't see price being a world champion he just doesn't seem a natural fighter to me and his stamina vs thompson in the second fight was a problem i could imagine chisora sitting on his chest for 4 rds then stopping price .
price has such an advantage of size against most fighters that he hasn't needed to to fight(not box) and now thompson has shown that if you stand up to the first 3rds you have a great chance to beat price .

World Title? No way.
I'd still like to see him vs Tyson fury. It's a could be a toss up for the first few rounds after that I'd see Fury prevailing.

when you say make it... i think he will make some money as long as he gets a fitness coach and manages to hide that chin he should make a bit of cash ... but as a world champion i am afraid to say nope!!

Lot to do, but yes.
Good luck to the man, a proper gentleman indeed.

Re: Can price still make it?
No, he's another overhyped British heavyweight unfortunately. Being big doesn't guarantee success, his chin and stamina are very suspect and just having a big punch isn't enough. Plus the two defeats do seem to have affected him mentally which isn't a great sign either.
Re: Can price still make it?
more worried about the stamina than I am the chin - he takes an okay shot, and is no chinnier than several others I could name - the problem is that someone with any questions about their punch resistance can have no short cuts when it comes to fitness, and Price seems to be gassed after a minute or two of hard fighting.

Re: Can price still make it?
Price still has a lot of time on his side. He needs to get with allegedly and fight tomato cans for 2 years. Then he can gamble against a Fury or a Haye and if he wins he's quids in.
He has a decent fan base and a lot of fighters seem to respect (and avoid) Thompson so it's not impossible.
He's a likeable guy also. I'm maybe being critical of Maloney here but putting him back in with thompson after the first result was a pretty dumb move.
I think he can do it, but only if he does not rush things and is prepared to essentially start again as he is still a relative novice in the pro game.

Re: Can price still make it?
I dont think he can.
To me, the lad looks mentally broken. I cant see him rebuilding his confidence sufficiently high enough, but that isn't to say that he cant. Your man Wlad has come back from a couple of huge setbacks... So it has been done before.

He definitely can. He has the skills, size and age. He's had a shxte 2013 but anything can happen with heavyweights. He's come crashing down to earth with a bang but that may benefit him in the long run. He won't proceed with an "invincible" mentality, he'll be more guarded, will pace himself better, and will not hold back when he's got somebody in trouble.
Wlad's crushing loss to Sanders was far worse than both losses to Thompson put together.

Re: Can price still make it?
I agree that time is on his side. He's 30 but in heavyweight terms that's still pretty young. Regarding fighting cans for 2 years, I dont agree with that. I dont see the purpose of it. It's not going to help him. Without meaning to be disrespectful to the likes of Sexton and co who are good domestic fighters. They didnt really prepare him for the step up to Thompson and that's a big part of his downfall aswell I think. He was having everything his own way and knocking people out left right and centre but when someone wasnt easily blown away he folded.ThereByTheGrace wrote:Price still has a lot of time on his side. Re: Can price still make it?
I know, but who do you put him in with at this moment in time? His confidence is very low. He is not in the same class as Lennox Lewis obviously but after his first loss he took a few steps back, regrouped at a slightly lower level and came back all the better.columbo wrote:I agree that time is on his side. If you put Price in the ring in a big test now he will likely sink, if you have a patient promoter and decent fighter who are willing to go back 2 years and develop mentally and perfect his flaws then you have a start.
It doesn't matter who he fights for a few years as long as gets back to winning ways
Re: Can price still make it?
Well when he was in the studio the other night for the Klitschko-povetkin broadcast he said something along the lines of having 2 fights and then having a big fight so im not sure exactly what that meant. Wouldnt surprise me if it was Chisora though.ThereByTheGrace wrote:I know, but who do you put him in with at this moment in time? His confidence is very low. I can see Chisora-Price soon aswell, I think it was supposed to be this summer, and it would be a very interesting fight that could go either way.
If I had to bet at this moment in time I would go for Chisora.

He's much older than fury with a little less experience I don't he will be world champ but you never know, he has a deverstaing punch
Re: Can price still make it?
Yeah but in heavyweight terms 30 isnt that old. I dont think age is so much the issue. It's more about the punch resistance/cardio if he cant blow someone out quickly.danconnollyeire wrote:He's much older than fury with a little less experience I don't he will be world champ but you never know, he has a deverstaing punch

Re: Can price still make it?
Not a chance, he's a busted flush. He will be nervous as hell from here on in. He will still blow out a few guys, but the minute he comes up against a durable campaigner, he will get the horrors again, tighten up, get tired, and get turned over.
He's not good the temperament or the chin for top level heavweight boxing.

Re: Can price still make it?
Not world level now but when the klits retire and the merry go round starts he has a chance. Thompson's not that bad.
Re: Can price still make it?
I think he will struggle now to really make a serious impact at the top of the division (world titles/ unification fights etc). Anytime he comes up against a durable opponent with a decent work rate he is going to be in for a rough night. Needs to take a good few fights now just to work on defence and ring IQ. It's kind've the same problem Khan has, only more extreme. You can't have bad defence, questionable stamina and a weak chin and fight aggressively. You'll look good when you're knocking people over and letting your hands go, but as soon as someone sticks around and starts firing back, you get yourself in all sorts of trouble.
Really hope Price gets some good paydays and even proves all the doubters wrong, he seems like a genuine guy, and maybe if he can change his style he might do it, but its a long way back.... I think it was the second fight where he really got exposed and it became clear that there were serious issues more so than the first too. Soon as he got clipped he looked like a fish out of water and when he came out after having Thompson down the round before he looked like he was out on his feet and didn't have a clue what he was doing.

Re: Can price still make it?
His mental state wasn't great before the two defeats. I remember either Johnny or Glen questioning it on Ringside a couple of years ago. Sky had flown him out to watch a Wlad fight and when asked if he wanted the fight and how he thought he would do, his reply was something like "maybe a couple of years as I would lose now". He was British champion at the time.

Price legitimately has a chance against anyone because of that incredible right hand.

You're right in a way but image the experience Fury could have by the time he's 30. Then again, Haye could spark him and never be the same again!columbo wrote:Yeah but in heavyweight terms 30 isnt that old. I dont think age is so much the issue.
