Oh FFS now Ali is being used as a comparison to justify Wlad's excessive constant, hugging, holding, leaning and squeezing of Povetkin.
It was a dire, cowardly, bullying display from a man who held all the physical advantages apart from a chin.
I suppose even more people will tune in to see him get ktfo in his next fight, which will hopefully next time take place with a competent ref who's got the bollocks to stand up to the status quo.

Seems that Povetkin didn't even question Wlad's fouling either, just meekly slunk into the sunset, content with his paycheck.

We need the opposing fighters to make more of a stink about this nonsense and get people outside of hardcore fans questioning the referees a bit more, put some pressure on future refs to get it right.

Which to me is odd you'd think he'd be livid, he got mugged. I suppose like you say the money cushioned the blow.
I was completely disappointed with Povetkin in the revenge stakes though even when he was tied up with one hand he wasn't throwing the other. Maybe just resting but I felt he should have pushed it.

He got a career high payday and will go back to headlining shows in Russia for decent money.

I think a lot of people think that all you have to do is turn-up, throw a couple of big punches and Wlad's out of there. There's a bit more to it than that. Povetkin's comments after the fight were classy and showed he just knew he wasn't going to win.

[quote="Riddick Blowe"]Regardless of who handled the promotion, the fact is that Wlad was allowed to get away with a shocking amount of fouling in this contest, and anyone who thinks what went on in that ring Saturday night is fair needs to give their head a shake.

Spot on. I despair for the fans who don't see it.

And this is coming from someone who bet on Wlad UD.
Exactly, it stank. Wlad continually infringed the rules, without even a hint of losing a point. Povetkin and his corner should have complained vociferously. It's pretty sad they didn't.

The thing is with these Klitschko opponents, they really just hit the jackpot getting the fight. The culmination of a heavyweight's work is to get, and lose, a fight with a Klitschko. It really doesn't matter to them what happens in the fight. Sure, some of them try to win. Others don't bother. But it's just the getting to the payday that counts. What happens after is an irrelevance for them. It's just not important to complain. You can almost see why. Sad.

I can only despair over the posters here defending Wladimir Klitschko. Surely they are playing devil's advocate because there is no way any normal person could enjoy that degrading spectacle on Saturday.

What gets me the most is what Wladimir was saying in the pre-fight VTs: 'People tried write me off for those fights in 03 and 04. Every time I fight I remember those critics. I still have something to prove,' he said bitterly, resentfully.

And he then proceeded to prove the critics wrong by squeezing his opponent tight, burying his glass chin on their shoulder and hitting with the free hand. Judo throwing him to the floor to score knockdowns. All of it aided by a weak referee too scared to do his job. Wow, he really proved the critics wrong there, didn't he?

I grew up watching great fighting men putting on great and incredible fights. Then I went back and watched the tapes of the old-timers and was even more astounded, high sporting theatre.

And now, in 2013, the standards have been so uniformly lowered across the board that fans and it seems the boxing media actually want obnoxious fighters who handpick one handicapped opponent per year and giant wrestlers who can't fight against semi-competent fighters so must cheat to survive.

And some people want to draw parallels with Robinson and Ali. Again, I can only despair.

Who cares that Wlad turned out effectively to be the 'home fighter' ? That just make the referee's performance look even worse.

No, Wlad usually jabs and backs off from opponents who are unwilling (Haye) or immobile (Chagaev, Peter, the rest) and the result is total tedium.

Povetkin for all his limitations was a shade above that sorry crap and tried make a fight. Wlad couldn't fight and the referee wouldn't make him. Regardless of the locale Wlad is the star fighter in Europe. God only knows what goes on behind the scenes with the Brothers Klit but the people trying to justify his obscene level of continuous spoiling are clutching at the most desperate of straws.

They all sound like vaguely sinister keyboard psychopaths anyway. They can't love Wlad for his unbearable non-boxing so they must love having him as champ for some other creepy reason.

(Practically) all I'm reading is people crying about Wlad's style and blaming officials. I'm not seeing much effort being put in to solve the problem. I'm not going to sit here and lie, I don't find Wlad the most exciting watch but I respect what he does and, more than that, I respect that he has identified his own weaknesses and implemented a technique/tactic that has enabled him to thrive regardless. That's a snapshot of everything human survival, development, and progress is all about.

If all you 'haters' do is sulk until he goes away - and that includes active pros and trainers who either have or might fight him - rather than produce a method of defeating the T-1000 version in the ring, like it or not, he'll have to go down as one of the greats as the puzzle has not been solved. Whilst a couple of prototype versions had their flaws exposed, Wlad remains unbeaten as a state of the art product.

Adapt and overcome.

This would be great, and admirable, if any of it were true.

He hasn't adapted, not in any legal way. He has resorted to cheating and relying to weak referees to mysteriously not implement the rules of boxing.

This isn't some perfect boxing specimen we are witnessing. It is a big strong man with a glass chin wrestling his opponents.

The reason no one has done what Wladimir is doing now before is because it is illegal. I cannot think of a single filmed heavyweight title fight I have not seen. I have never seen such an excess of cheating and refusal to engage in combat. It was actually embarrassing.

The style he used on Saturday night- he wouldn't beat Nikolay Valuev if Valuev was allowed to employ the same style. He wouldn't beat Primo Carnera, who besides being much bigger and stronger than Wladimir was also a wrestler. But would it prove Valuev or Carnera were better boxers than him? Of course it wouldn't, because it is not boxing.

Heavyweight boxing wasn’t that great in the 1980s either… I heard all the same arguments back then.

Somehow its become a golden agre…or at least a silver one…

David Bey would go through both Klitschkos on the same night and eat KFC out of the bucket in between rounds.

I’m off to watch the holy trinity… Page-Tubbs, Spoon-Tubbs and Tyson-Bonecrusher…

Oh fornicate off Ezzard with your empty ad hominen babble.

The 1980s heavyweight title fights had Larry Holmes/Gerry Cooney, Holmes/Witherspoon, Holmes/Bonecrusher, Holmes/Williams, Spinks/Holmes I & II, Spinks/Cooney, Weaver/Tate, Weaver Coetzee, Coetzee/Dokes, Page/Coetzee, Thomas/Weaver, Witherspoon/Bruno, then MIKE TYSON wasting everybody with spectacular high level ultra-violence.

Now tell me Ezzard, specifically, about all those great heavyweight title fights of the last decade since Lennox Lewis/Vitali Klitschko.

Don't make an empty statement, argue your point, tell us about the great fights since 03. Show us how there is no difference between the last 10 years and the 1980s era. You have a decade to work with.

The argument is that looking at the lost generation through rose tinted glasses, when in fact they would win a title, get drunk or fat, then lose a title, is not a true reflection of what the 80's was really like

Are loaded gloves not cheating?

Aren't you due another hissy fit about the state of boxing whilst simultaneously cherry picking from some sort of rose-tinted golden era of boxing and threatening to leave the forum for good, or are you just going to close out one of your "other" accounts instead?

Change the record.

I am not a supporter of this era…I’m just not a fantasist…

You do remember that Greg Page won his title on a stoppage almost 4 mins into round 8…in South Africa?

Oh woe…the cheating…oh woe…the weak referees…unclean…unclean…

Coetzee wasn’t given a rematch…Page went straight for fans’ favourite Tony ‘TNT’ Tubbs… They slapped their bellies against one another and engaged in high-level ultra jelly wobbles… Reports persist that on the day of their fight wet-look hair gel had sold out across the state.

Tubbs, the "boxer-thinker" and "eater-drinker". They were boring fights, although there was the tantalising possibility that one of them would wake up and take charge.

Although I do have a soft spot for Page-Tubbs.
Tubbs and Page had a loft of soft spots.

Like any era there were good fights and bad ones…

But those fat blokes made a mockery of the sport. All the writers of the time consistently slammed the heavyweights for being a disgrace.

Tubbs had that skinny arms and legs thing going on that actually made him look like Humpty Dumpty.

They were the best of times.

Boring, but solid, which sounds familiar.

My favourite was Larry's typically Holmes-esque reaction to Witherspoon-Page. "I told you they couldn't fight!"
Thanks mate. That brought back memories. Love the Witherspoon-Broad write up.

So I listed action fights from the 1980s and the Klitists responded as only the could, with the same old cheap ad hominen nothing posts.

Again I ask, list me the action heavyweight title fights of this decade. I listed action fights from the 80s, you skirted them and brought up Page/Tubbs. Or a 4 minute round that was the fault of timekepper Lacky Schwartz nothing at all to do to with the two fighters tactics or the referee.

As for 'quixall', I don't know who he is. No one has ever accused me of having multiple accounts, or being Quixall. In fact I haven't seen any other poster who writes with my cheery, life affirming positivity. I am the one and only LG!
