Marvin Hagler vs Kevin Finnegan Question.

Post by KOJOE90 »

In 1978 future Middleweight Champion Marvin Hagler had two fights with the UK's tough Kevin Finnegan, did anyone here ever see these fights? I have read that Finnegan gave The Marvelous One all the trouble he could handle untill being stopped on cuts. Is this correct?

Anyone got any thoughts or information on these two fights? :TU:

I remember reading about the fights in Boxing News. In the first fight Finnegan gave Hagler all he could handle but had to retire after the 8th round with a bad cut. Hagler was probably in front at the end. In the second fight only two months later the cut had not healed properly, and Finnegan had to retire when the old wound reopened. Hagler was doing better this time and was well in front.
(As I remember it)

Finnigan was a very underated boxer. He beat Minter twice, by stoppage I think, but lost to Sibson. Out of the three who went in with Hagler he certainly gave the best showing.

Sorry to be pedantic but:

Minter got three razor thin decisions over Finnegan for the British title.

Finnegan beat Sibson, again for the British title.

Kevin's brother won the Olympic Gold Medal and gave the awesome Bob Foster a very decent argument for the Light Heavyweight crown.

All told they were a highly skilled and vastly under-rated fightig family, at least by modern fans.

Thanks for the feedback guys. :TU:

I to would be interested to here if tapes of these fights are available.

I have read that both the Finnigans liked a drink even in training camp.

Chris wrote a very good auto-biography after he retired which is quite an eye opener and very entertaining.
I remember reading that Kevin was a talented painter...
I think they both liked their Guinness....... but they always seemed very fit when they fought.

I recently read Chris' auto biography, it was a decent read..

They both liked a drink but it didnt impact on their fitness - Chris was a good runner and a hard trainer with a slower then average heart beat - the doctors on the Olympic team were amazed by his resting heart rate and decalred him one of the fittest men on the whole team - all this, despite his love of the black stuff!

If you train hard and regular you don't have to give up beer, unless of course you're drinking it in enormous quantities. John Walker, the New Zealander who won the 1500m at the 1976 Olympics admitted he liked to have a few beers every night. For some people it's just a natural part of life. Doctors in Ireland as late as the 1950's prescribed Guinness for underweight babies. I better stop there though, because I'm quite certain I don't have to really convince forum posters that it's ok to drink beer.

hehe.i think the point he's making is that it was himself that got the results of who beat who wrong earlier in the thread.
