This. He's already "made it". I can see him winning the European too (not from Pulev though), and maybe getting a shot at a world title. With his pop, he might even win it, but if he retired tomorrow, I would say he's already "made it".Dead Mouse wrote:What's "It"? Because British and Commonwealth titles aren't to be sniffed at. To most fighters out there that's what they'd call making "It". It shows he has the tools so it's all down to how he reacts to his past two fights. Give him a bit of time.
Unless "It" actually means "bread and butter pudding". In that case I'd say yes, he can make it, because his nan taught him how to when he was knee high.
Sorry, she was knee high. He was already 6' 2''.
Can price still make it?

Re: Can price still make it?
yes but price has much better boxing skills and punch than fury. his chin and defense is an issue but the HW division is not exactly strong at the moment.danconnollyeire wrote:You're right in a way but image the experience Fury could have by the time he's 30. Then again, Haye could spark him and never be the same again!columbo wrote:Yeah but in heavyweight terms 30 isnt that old. I dont think age is so much the issue. It's more about the punch resistance/cardio if he cant blow someone out quickly.danconnollyeire wrote:He's much older than fury with a little less experience I don't he will be world champ but you never know, he has a deverstaing punch
why shouldn't a man with his height, punch and skills not be able to grab a world title? it is not like tyson and ali are still around.
he might need to start fighting less crowd pleasing but if he adopted a jab and grab style like wladimir I don't see why he can't become a champ. wlad is chinny too and he still was able to become close to an ATG by apopting a dirty style. fighting dirty is not great but even great fighters like hopkins, holyfield and ward use it so why not price?
why should price not be able to do what klit did.

Re: Can price still make it?
Unless he can get a fight with a contender & win it spectacularly, I can see the heavyweight division passing him by.
Losing like that in quick succession is very damaging psychologically too.
I can't truly write him off yet as I don't know, but my gut feeling is that David Price might be yesterday's news.

Yep, I guess you're right. He could be babied for 5 or so KO wins against nobodys and the same could happen to someone like Mitchell, fight for an alphabet paper title after Vitali retires and 'the guy who got sparked twice by grandad Thompason' could fullfill his dreams by becoming a world championdominik wrote:

As do most heavyweights due to size. The thing is one he knows his chin is glass he has to change his whole style and become klitchko, however, klitchko was a great boxer to begin with. Where as Price has only ever been a big right hand!
Throw him in prizefighter and he wouldn't get past round 1
Re: Can price still make it?
Yes he can still make it - at British level. All about levels now for him, he'll never make it at world level now with his deficiencies.

If you would have said, after the Skelton fight, that he had made 'it', everyone would have said you were mad. With the push Sky, and the allegedly were giving him, his career will have been a huge let down if that's as good as it got.

How come that incredible right hand couldn't get him past Thompson then?Karl Jade wrote:Price legitimately has a chance against anyone because of that incredible right hand.

Re: Can price still make it?
I reckon as soon as the brothers Klitschko retire ANYONE can win a portion of the world title and we,ll probably see someone attempt a RJJ from MW try and win the HW title
So although im pretty doubtful its not impossible for Price to fight for world crown
His stamina is his main concern for me,i was pleased with his chin in the Thompson rematch but his fitness and conditioning was terrible

Re: Can price still make it?
Thompson is incredibly sound defensively yet Price nearly had him out of there in the 2nd round in their last fight. Only Wlad had stopped TT in his career, and frankly I wouldn't put money on anyone else doing it.jamesmcdonnell wrote:How come that incredible right hand couldn't get him past Thompson then?Karl Jade wrote:Price legitimately has a chance against anyone because of that incredible right hand.

For a start, give an example of punch in heavyweight boxing that is bigger than Price's right. Wlad's right is arguable, then I'm struggling. That doesn't constitute 'most heavyweights'.
Prizefighter. Piss off.

Re: Can price still make it?
I don't think he is world top 15 material. He will be limited to looking decent at domestic level, with mixed results at Euro level. He reminds me a bit of retired lanky light middle, Michael Jones. Good domestic wars with Jamie Moore.
Re: Can price still make it?
Thompson was quite simply one of the worst match ups for Price. His cute style caused all sorts of problems for David. As for the decision to fight him twice...
David had sounded very level headed in recent interviews. He will be back and IMO will reach the same level again before being 'found out'.

Re: Can price still make it?
To be fair what world class heavyweight has Price knocked out? To say he has the biggest punch in HW boxing is a bit premature don't you think when Haye has knocked over better fighters and Wilder has flattened twice as many fighters than Price has ever knocked out.Karl Jade wrote:For a start, give an example of punch in heavyweight boxing that is bigger than Price's right. Re: Can price still make it?
He seems too amateur like to me always has needs to loosen a bit.
Re: Can price still make it?
Yes. Of course. He’ll have found out more about himself in the fights with Thompson than he would have in 100 knock-over jobs.
Price was overmatched early. Which is exactly what happened to other unknowns who never made it…like Archie Moore… There’s a big Ukrainian fella who got sparked out a few times…he dropped off the radar though…
We all moan about overprotected fighters and the myth of the undefeated record…then when a guy actually loses we write him off.
I’m on board the Price express. He can be a real force in the division. There will be ups and downs but that will make his eventual triumphs all the sweeter.

Overmatched early ?
30 year old Price has been a full time boxer for over 10 years, Olympic medallist, a pro for over 4 years and 15 pro fights before fighting Thompson (who was brought over specifically because he had half a reputation and they thought he was well beatable).
I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see Price box again - his comments in the days after the Thompson fight were very telling.
Also, I can't see any other promoter bank rolling him for the next 2 or 3 years to try to build his confidence only for him to come a cropper the next time he steps up a level (I know it, you know it, but most importantly Price himself knows it).
Re: Can price still make it?
yes price can come again as has been said with regards klitshko he came back from similar circumstances price will better for this experience but it might have to take a bit more of a safety first aproach and a patient crowd and work on his cardio all which can be done however whilst i think he can beat chisora going in to soon with him would be a mistake as chisora makes you work for every minute of every round think how tired vitalli looked against him and then how father time was mentioned no chisora works at a tempo few heavyweights like
Re: Can price still make it?
price will always be a fighter that can spring an upset because of his size and power but he's not a natural fighter he has no rythem or timing at world class another problem he has is low stamina which is his biggest fault ,if price fought chisora i'd put everything on chisora mid/late rd stoppage and chisora can't punch.WelshJack wrote:He seems too amateur like to me always has needs to loosen a bit.
Re: Can price still make it?
price was an amateur world champion. He is not just a banger he can box a little too. shaky defense but solid jab, great right and alsogazza8 wrote:Karl Jade wrote:Price legitimately has a chance against anyone because of that incredible right hand.

acceptable combinations and uppercuts.
I would say offensively he has more variety than wlad. he is also a decent athlet with solid speed albeit of course not quite in wladimirs category who is an all time great athlete (which allowed him along with his dirty tactics to succeed despite his lack of ring instinct).
If price adopts wladimirs dicipline and gives up on being flashy (he likes to throw those combinations which is a risky thing for a big man unless they are wisely chosen in the right situations) I can see him winning a title.
his skillset is a rare thing and who is really good in today's HW anyway? he just needs to learn to box around his weakness and not become a second macca.
Also I think that he is chinny but not super chinny. he can take some glancing blows, the problem was not only the chin but also the stamina. he needs to fight at a more measured pace (less combinations and more breaks) and get in better shape along with sharpening his defense and dirty tactics.
