Re: Jamie McDonnell splits with Dennis Hobson
All I know about Dennis Hobson is he promoted Clinton Woods for a time.
Who is actually in his stable? What have been some of his biggest shows while he has been a promoter?
This guy has just seemed so peripheral on the promoting scene. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Re: Jamie McDonnell splits with Dennis Hobson
I recall reading that Hobson turned down the chance to have the Ceja fight broadcast live on Sky, because he didn't want to deal with Matchroom and wanted only to deal directly with Sky/Barney. A classic case of cutting off one'a nose to spite one's face - rather than take a smaller cut of a mediocre fee, he settled for 100% of fcuk all.
Re: Jamie McDonnell splits with Dennis Hobson
Yeah but why should a promoter have to take a smaller fee because another promoter has an exclusive deal? Matchroom would basically be getting a cut for doing fornicate all and I can understand if that was the case why Hobson wouldnt want to do that.earsjohn wrote:I recall reading that Hobson turned down the chance to have the Ceja fight broadcast live on Sky, because he didn't want to deal with Matchroom and wanted only to deal directly with Sky/Barney. Re: Jamie McDonnell splits with Dennis Hobson
He's as peripheral in Britain as anyone not Warren or Hearn and has a track record of building decent fighters into excellent fighters and getting them opportunities that were unexpected - he's also done that without having a massive stable, massive clout or friends in high places. There was a good article and interview in Boxing Monthly a month or 2 ago; I think I remember he was involved in boxing as he is a fan and enjoys the sport but imagine he feels hurt and used; fightacademy comes on here from time to time to promote fights and give out info - hope they come on here soon.Riddick Blowe wrote:All I know about Dennis Hobson is he promoted Clinton Woods for a time.

How did he get involved mate? I dont know much about him. Did you say he made money from owning scrap yards?palooka wrote:He's as peripheral in Britain as anyone not Warren or Hearn and has a track record of building decent fighters into excellent fighters and getting them opportunities that were unexpected - he's also done that without having a massive stable, massive clout or friends in high places. A middleman (Eddie) was being forced into a commercial activity and the (unwanted/uneeded) middleman wanted an unearned cut of the fee is another way of looking at it.earsjohn wrote:I recall reading that Hobson turned down the chance to have the Ceja fight broadcast live on Sky, because he didn't want to deal with Matchroom and wanted only to deal directly with Sky/Barney. But, like it or not, that is the situation. Sky have, effectively, outsourced their boxing production - it's a standard practice in every other area of business. Hobson had two choices and it appears that his ego ruled his decision, and ultimately led to the current situation.palooka wrote:A middleman (Eddie) was being forced into a commercial activity and the (unwanted/uneeded) middleman wanted an unearned cut of the fee is another way of looking at it.earsjohn wrote:I recall reading that Hobson turned down the chance to have the Ceja fight broadcast live on Sky, because he didn't want to deal with Matchroom and wanted only to deal directly with Sky/Barney. Re: Jamie McDonnell splits with Dennis Hobson
Sad to read this.
In his first 9 fights, Mcdonnell had won 8 and drawn one - he then lost his next 2 fights.
It is (or at least was) standard for all contracts with FW that if a boxer lost 2 consecustive fights then his contract was terminated.
A bit like duke McKenzie, at his weight he is never going to get massive popularity from the mainstream man in the street - and he doesn't seem to have the personality for that anyway.

That's the promoters fault, if he'd have done his job properly everyone in the world would have known who McDonnell is and tickets for his fights would have gone faster than tickets for Glastonbury.

Well done Adam Smith, that exclusive TV deal for the Hearns family is really helping British boxing: creates a level playing field, encourages competition and ensures all the UK promoters get a fair crack of the whip.
spot on mate
Re: Jamie McDonnell splits with Dennis Hobson
I'll be honest, I don't know the ins and outs of McDonnell's career and his relationship with Hobson, but from the outside looking in I can see both sides of the story.
What's disappointing is that all ties seem to have been severed. I can understand JM wanting to raise his profile and fight on a more recognised TV channel, i.e. Sky (I guess we're all presuming he's going down that route), and surely Dennis realises it's not good for him to boxing on Primetime in front of a minuscule audience..... but I don't understand why he couldn't have stayed on in a managerial capacity? That would have made the most sense to me. A bit like Chris Sanigar, who does small hall shows in the south west, manages Lee Selby under the Matchroom promotional banner.

X2 Dennis has been treated very badly here I believe he has spent a lot of money on Jamie and he gets cast aside I have met Dennis and his father a few times and I have always found them to be ok and tbh I am appalled if it's true that Jamie has walked away from them completely but having said that boxing is a filthy game at times so nothing new can ever come to my eyes and ears

Re: Jamie McDonnell splits with Dennis Hobson
They still have to film the show and send a production team, all that would happen would be that Matchroom would co-promote and get a share of the profits (I don't think there were any) for doing precisely fvck all, how is that fair?earsjohn wrote:But, like it or not, that is the situation. Extra security has been apparently been installed at Farmer Warrenz after his entire stable was ransacked.

But all 4 of our other world titleists ( not the three you state??) are all match room boys. No other promoter can currently compete with that so Jamie is never going to be as high profile surely??Jack B wrote:Two sides to every story. Hobson shelled out ££££ to get him a shot at home, but the problem is nobody saw it. I don't think it's unreasonable for McDonnell to be asking questions. He's one of 4 world titleholders in the UK - his profile is miles below the other 3. How many people will have watched the Ceja fight? 10,000?
The timing is strange/poor given last week's announcement that DH had linked up with Queensbury/BN - but then Jamie has stated he knew nothing about that proposed deal. Either he's lying or it's poor communication from Hobson, as surely he would want/need to keep JM informed of any proposed agreement throughout every stage of negotiations.
I can't blame McDonnell for wanting to fight for Matchroom. It's by the far the best option for any UK boxer at the moment. I'm just surprised he couldn't do a deal and keep Dennis as his manager.

It didn't help that a day after he won the title, he fvcked off to Turkey, did no interviews and wasted his biggest opportunity to promote himself.squared circle wrote:But all 4 of our other works titleists ( not the three you state??) are all match room boys.
