Celebrity Fight Fans

Post by Seamus »

OK, who were and are the biggest celebrity fans you can think of. The guys who had to be at every fight and even hangout with fighters afterwards. Of hand I'd say my number one has to be Shemp Howard of the Stooges. He attended numerous bouts at Madison Square Garden, where he frequently shadow boxed in his ringside seat. If I'm not mistaken, Shemp had a fatal heart attack after attending a bout there. Others who deserve honorable mention are Al Capone, a guy who absolutely worshipped fighters. Gerry Marsden of Gerry and the Pacemakers, who admits to being boxing mad. Sylvester Stallone, a very obvious choice, and Mickey Rourke and Russell Crowe. Surely more names will come to mind.

Shemp used to do a pretty good shadow boxing exibition on the three stooges show as a prelude to an altercation with the villians they used to encounter. His most memerable being a kayo at the hands of Mr. Slip.

Shemp did another fancy footwork routine with Vernon Dent as an insurance man who he threatened with the words "I'd give it to you good boy".

I know Shemp was a fight fan and, if I remember correctly, he died of a heart attack on the way home from a fight. Larry Fine, the curly-haired sttoge, was a supposedly promising amateur boxer in his teens. Don't know if he was a fight fan though.

I did see a photo of Redd Foxx with an "M" shaved into his hair in reference to an Archie Moore heavyweight title shot.
