Derry Mathews signs five fight deal with Queensbury

It was a fight that Kevin Mitchell described as a "nice little dance in the park" but it now appears any chance of the lightweight exchanging moves with Derry Mathews in December is over after the Liverpudlian signed a five fight deal with Queensbury Promotions.

In a report from today's Liverpool Echo it was revealed that Mathews' first fight with QP will be in his backyard on December 7 for the WBO European Lightweight title which is currently held by Ireland's Stephen Ormond. If successful, the current Commonwealth champion will then target British titlist Martin Gethin as well as a rematch with Italy's Emiliano Marsili, after a seventh round stoppage loss at the beginning of last year, and then hopes to challenge for a world title as part of his new eighteen month contract.

Mathews is fresh from an impressive fourth round TKO over Curtis Woodhouse last month that once again proved that the 30-year-old has found yet another wind in his memorable career.

The end of the blockbuster domestic showdowns, but he should get a world title shot at the end and I don't blame him.

A step down considering his next fight was going to be Mitchell.

Says who? Nothing was even verbally agreed. Kevin and Eddie wanted it, so what? He is not a Matchroom fighter.

Didn't see this coming.

I know Derry checks the forum and if you read this good luck with the new promotional deal always in a good fight.

Just went on his twitter and he posted this interview up.

Doesnt sound like he was overly happy with how he was treated by matchroom.

Liam and paul both won their titles on matchroom cards.

Think if you have a little look at how active liam, paul and stephen have been under warren over the last 12 months you might agree with my point of view.

Yeah after the Woodhouse win,he did seem somewhat irked that Mithchell,Crolla etc were being mentioned in title shots with Burns before him

Its a tough one for them coz theyve all pretty much beat one and lost too another(Mathews,,Crolla,Rees) and Mitchell just had a shot at Ricky

I think we should have Mitchell vs Crolla and if Crolla pulls off the win then he deserves a shot at Burns. I think that Mitchell is the best lightweight in britain bar Burns so if he pulls it off then he's earnt it.

I just don't get the feeling Hearn is matching Mitchell and Crolla.

As for Matthews, sounds like he wanted Matchroom and I wish they had signed him (if only to get the domestic fights on track). That seems fucked now.

,Mitchell v Crolla is probably most deserving..just,but i can see how Derry, might be peeved,he hasnt lost to Crolla(i thought he did in the drawed rematch) but he,s lost to Rees

Crolla beat Rees,so he feels he should be next as Mitchell just had his shot(but i thought Rees beat Crolla, as did Gavin so im sure he,s aggrieved )

If anything maybe Kevin has to beat 2 of the bunch to get another shot

Mathews v Crolla i,ll go for most deserving due to recent results(but technically by my scorecards Rees should be next(athough id much Rather Burns fought no more Brits)

Mitchell vs Crolla would be a quality fight though. Dont understand why they wouldnt make it.

That was about as good as id seen Mitchell in a while, dont know how good Lopez was to be fair but he still looked good dismantling him

I dont think the top 10 LW,s in UK could produce a bad fight between them, really top class fights them all so far

I would love to see it, he just doesn't seem to be mentioning it at all. That and he seems to be angling them at different belts.

Yeah they seem to be directioning Mitchell towards the IBF belt. If they were going to match him up with Derry though, cant see why they wouldnt of done the same with Crolla. Im guessing Derry was seen as just an opponent rather than someone they *matchroom* would of wanted to use long term.

Unless I'm mistaken , He was arranged bouts under David Coldwell and not Matchroom.

If Coldwell brokered fights onto Matchroom cards then that doesn't really have anything to do with Hearn, who procurred his services for the night like he does with several other fighters lately.

Woodhouse isn't a matchroom fighter either but has been afforded TV fights through Coldwell's relationship with Matchroom.
