Luis Firpo

Post by wouter »

I came across a record for Luis Firpo, which has two extra fights in the year 1923 ( no exact date given); a 2nd round KO over Jim Hibbard in Brooklyn, NY (next to the one in Mexico) and a 4round ND against Jack Downey in Indianapolis, IN. ( which may be misplaced since both the 4-round distance and the fighter seem Californian to me).
It also has the 1923 Homer Smith fight as a ND instead of a W10.
Maybe someone can check it.

Did I hit the wrong button, or did it came up as a "new topic"? (Check)
Guess I hit "New Topic" instead of "Post Reply". Over and out.

Check the CBZ guys!

(Why are we so often forgotten!?)

Those fights were exhibitions, and are listed as such on our record, along with many others on Firpo's record.

FIRPO-HIBBARD BOUT IN MEXICO TO BE MERELY AN EXHIBITION

Mexico City, June 15

The promoters of the bout between Luis Angel Firpo and Jim Hibbard to be staged here Sunday, announced tonight, because of the agitation against the contest, it would be held as merely an exhibition match. Firpo arrived today from Havana and declared himself in good condition. The reported poor showing of Hibbard in his workouts here is responsible for the agitation against the fight.

1923/07/27 NYTimes reports this bout occurred at Grand Rapids, MI
1923/08/17 The exhibition match with Joe Downey was ten rounds with 16 ounce gloves and he was hospitalized after the bout with a slight brain concusssion.
