Former Boxers Drug Shame.

Post by KOJOE90 »

Former Danish Middleweight Tom Bogs who fought likes of Bunny Sterling, John Conteh, Carlos Monzon, Mike Quarry, Don Fullmer, Chris Finnegan and Emile Griffith has recently admitted to taking amphetamines before some of his fight?

From the AP.
COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- Former Danish boxing star Tom Bogs says he took amphetamines before two key bouts, one against Emile Griffith.

"The substance removed all my nervousness and made me feel I had enough energy to beat the whole world," said Bogs, who lost the middleweight fight in 1970.

Bogs' admission came in his autobiography, "Mesterbokseren," (The Boxing Champion), which is to be published Friday.

Two months later, Bogs took a "double dose" before winning a European middleweight title fight against Britain's Chris Finnegan.

"I am unhappy about telling it, unhappy about having to say it to anyone," Bogs said. "But it's the truth. ... I made a mistake. Now my conscience will be relieved and it will hopefully underline that doping doesn't lead to anything."

The 61-year-old Bogs, who retired with a 77-8-1 record in 1974, later worked as a prison guard and garbage collector. A bust of Bogs is in the Hall of Fame at the national soccer stadium in Copenhagen along with other Danish sports stars.

I wonders how common the use of amphetamines by Boxers has been over the years?

KOJOE you bring up a good point. Also, I'm curious if adreneline has ever been used.

I'm sure everything that could give a person a bit of advantage has been used. Cocaine back before it was illegal, Abe Attel mentioned in his court hearing for his bout with Knockout Brown that he had used cocaine and I would be willing to bet that it wasn't just a one time occurence!

>>>Attell used coke before that bout because of a bad tooth.<<<

Of course he will deny use for any other cause accept something supposedly warranted! Cocaine was very widly abused all through the U.S. at that time and certainly Attell was not above gaining any kind of advantage necessary to win, though he did not win that particular fight, at least according to most ringside observers!

1970's 175lb'er Rahway Prison fighter James Scott was accused by one of his opponents of being on Angel Dust.

Scott denies it.

I have read that a number of old-time fighters used
cocaine to relieve the pain in their hands before
getting into the ring.

I find a little hard to believe as being on PCP would be just too obvious. It reminds me of Dock Ellis claiming that he was on acid when he pitched his no-hitter in the 70s, but I just don't see that happening as I have done acid and there is no way in hell that someone "tripping" would be able to perform at such a high level, no pun intended!

Why does Barry! have to use exclamation points all the time?
Which boxer was it that recently claimed the opponent's corner spiked his water? Toney? And if it's that easy to slip something into someone's water at a fight, I wonder just how many fighters have used laced water.
And do they test fighters before or after the fights? I know Toney's win over Ruiz was nullified because he tested positive for a steroid, but does anyone know if he was collected from before or after the fight?

I don't know Barry, Bill "Spaceman" Lee said he was high several times while on the mound. Joe Pepitone said he sometimes smoked weed before a game, and he even got Mickey Mantle to smoke up before a game once, then added (if my memory serves me correct) that Mantle went 4 for 4. I can't picture playing any sport after smoking up, but a few guys claim they have. I don't remember what it was Lee said he was high on when he pitched though. If Ellis was on LSD 25, when he pitched his no-hitter in 1970 that's pretty amazing. He may have seen two batters at a time.

I can believe Ellis was on LSD when he pitched a game. When I was alot younger I took some LSD before a party. This wasn't a get-so-drunk-you-fall-down-party.
During this party, I challenged the winner of a chess game 2 guys were playing. I won that game and took on a line of challengers and finally quit after beating 7 guys in a row. It was like I could see many moves ahead with ease and avenues which to move my pieces.
It might have been the same with Ellis. He probably just got so focused on that strike zone or creative with his pitches that he was unhittable that game. Not all LSD trips make you hallicinate heavily, sometimes it heightens your senses, like hearing, mind acuity.

I would say it is a good possibility when Roy Jones was denied his victory that cost him a gold medal in the olympics that the judges were on acid.
