Bloody hell, wish I'd never mentioned it.
Haye has no control of the price of attending, that's down to whoever is bringing the event.
A bit like Sky Sports has an on/off button, you don't have to attend.
There are countless events like this going on every week, many are with boxers.
There's a dinner coming up with Mercer and Moorer for instance - now who would know anything about those guys if you weren't into boxing.
Marvin Hagler can be an absolute diva on these events but people pay to see him.
Holyfield has done a recent tour and at one event refused to eat food in the same room as the people paying to see him, and did not sign one autograph.

The one time I met Haye, was when I was an amateur boxing journalist, think I was writing for some website or other, I asked him if I could get in touch with him for an interview via email when he was less busy, he looked at me like I was a piece of dog turd, then smirked, and gave me a fake email address!

My experience was quite different. As a newbie amateur journalist and a huge fan of his, I messaged him on myspace, and he didn’t respond. I tried again a few weeks later, listing his fights that I'd been to see and basically saying, come on mate help me out here. I got an immediate reply with a mobile number and a line which simply said "call me in 15 mins". I ran to grab a pad and a pen (pre-iPad days lol), ran out to the car park of where I worked and conducted the most surreal interview ever. I'll honestly never forget it. A complete gentleman.

Then I met him a while later at a pre-Mormeck press conference and said to him that I was that bloke who he'd spoke to and he nodded politely and said "oh yeh hows it going?" before he got moved on by whoever was looking after him. I honestly thought he hadn't even heard what I'd said properly.

However, I got a further message from him a couple of days later (and I hadn't pre-empted it at all) offering me another interview!!!! Just out of the blue, I was delighted. Still one of my best moments as an amateur journalist. I thanked him afterwards and he responded it was his pleasure, and signed it off "peace... Dave". I wore the shite out of the 'me mate Dave' line afterwards.

I'm older now and a more cynical git then I was then. It is a shame but don't get the buzz from that kind of thing as I used to. However, David Haye gave me the time of day when he didn't have to, and I'll always be grateful to him for that. One of the most insightful, intelligent, engaging, and interesting boxers I have ever spoken to, if not the most. It’s a bit ignorant for so many posters to constantly harp on about the toe every time his name is mentioned, when we are talking about a two weight world champion who didn’t have a promoter laying it on a plate for him.

Haye is a frigging ledge in my book, and if he doesn’t get every situation right, I’m not going to hold it against him. If he’s smart enough to cash in, then good for him. I’m sure there are plenty of people who will look forward to going to see him, and from my experience, they won’t be disappointed.
