Good watch, quite sad really, it's only when you watch it now that you notice he wasn't really ready for that fight ! Deep down i think he knew he wasn't going to win that night. Good watch though

Yeah I found it quite sad too.The spark and confidence that he`d had previously had all but completely gone, and he reminded me a bit of the embarassing alcoholic that every family has,and now just about being tolerated by those that are close to him.Even the way that he spoke was so different from how he used to be,almost like everything that he said he was trying to convince himself too.

Re: Hattons Last Stand....
Good programme and lots of interesting stuff....no sign of Rickys Mum, Dad, brother who had been there in the glory years - obviously disagreed with the come back.
At times it felt it was more about the weight loss and renewed dedication to a strucutre in his life that was more important than the outcome of the fight. if they were the drivers I wish Ricky would have give himself an easier opponent and went out on a high....
"interesting" characters in the dressing room - not sure who they were - the american guy, the black guy all obviously wanting Ricky to not make any "quick descisions" hmmmmmm wonder why?
The guy who jumped out of the crowd to confront Ricky about his performance - dickhead!
If Ricky had of won, would he have fought on - I think so - and that would have been bad!!!

Re: Hattons Last Stand....
I haven't seen the programme, but I still agree with Glyn Leach's editorial in the aftermath of the fight that Ricky will step into the ring again.
I noticed in the recent interview for boxrec news that he has changed his perception of the fight.... from originally saying "I got want I wanted from the fight, I know it aint there anymore" - to "I got want I wanted from the fight, I know I could still hang at world level".

Re: Hattons Last Stand....
Was it just me or was it crying out to everyone how many yes men and hoop lickers there was surrounding Hatton throughout that programme.
Dont make quick decisions
Your head movement is great
Your looking great out there bla bla bla.
My girlfriend was watching the programme with me and said "Why does he keep his hands so low and just let the other guy punch him in the face" and bob shannon said at the end of the round that his head movement was great. Lol.
The programme was quite a sad watch, Hatton was and still is a boxing idol of mine and if he fought until he was 75 id probably still support him but hopefully that fight and his new book are the final chapters for him as a fighter.

Yh me too, he kept saying you need to move your head Rick, use your jab more, which were the right instructions IMO, and in the corner during the fight he was saying to the 2nd, he's lost his concentration, he's stopped moving his head about round 5-6

i thought it seemed like Hatton didn't lose concentration so much as losing faith or confidence, almost? it seemed to me like he started to go inside himself and lost the belief and once he did that he never got it back again...
like when he said at the end of the fight (after 'get a towel over my head, please') 'it wasn't there, even before the knockout', it was like he had realised during the fight his own reactions and timing had faded and it affected his confidence badly?
Re: Hattons Last Stand....
I thought his timing was terrible, from the off. Others I watched it with (in the arena) thought he was doing well but I kept saying he's missing by a mile.
The whole thing underpinning his comeback seemed to be "redemption", whatever he's wrapped that up to be in his head, god knows. I'd imagine about halfway through the contest he knew he wasn't a. winning b. going to win, so he's going out on another loss and this time in front of his home crowd. That's going to shoot you through, no matter how made of stone you are.

Re: Hattons Last Stand....
I always believed him when he said it was about redemption nothing else. Last night reinforced it for me. Bob Shannon is a good man and he did all he could in the corner that night even if the instructions were a bit basic. Hatton came to the corner after about round 7 and said its not there anymore. Even with the yes men after the fight he wasn't kidding himself and knew that was it. He could easily have been convinced by them and took another fight. He didn't he retired there and then because he couldn't mix it anymore. Even straight after the fight although he's gutted you can see a weight has been lifted off his shoulders

Re: Hattons Last Stand....
I admire the fact he knew it wasn't there anymore. It must been a hard thing to deal with but he said it was because of the out-of-ring punishment (the drink) and it showed.
Re: Hattons Last Stand....
They were saying his head movement was great at the start of the fight when it wasn't and never started commenting on it being poor until he started blowing out his hole. By that time there were more problems than poor head movement.
Re: Hattons Last Stand....
Too much nervous energy I think, he seemed to be tiring early. I still don't think it was a bad display ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. He was in the fight for much of it, but was very fatigued and this factored. His poor timing increased his fatigue, but I think his poor timing was largely to do with nervous energy (every shot wanted to be a killer shot).
But all things considered, to do what he did, to shed the weight, to change the lifestyle, to stop abusing his body and to even just mix it and be competitve at fringe world level against an opponent who was always stylistically wrong for him in a weight in which it could be argued he never won a fight in, weren't bad going.
In some ways it was a bit of a shame that Ricky chose Schenkenko as a comeback fight, because there were lot of things he looked like he still had - his footwork was okay and handspeed pretty good still. In some ways it was a shame he didn't take a tune up and realistically see how far he would go when less nervous and less rusty - given the work he had put in to make the weight etc.

Re: Hattons Last Stand....
I would say that most people had Ricky ahead by the end of the 5th.... it was still going pretty well at that stage. Quite possibly only lost the 5th round.orbtastic wrote:I thought his timing was terrible, from the off. I don't understand what this means ?jackukmma wrote:I always believed him when he said it was about redemption nothing else.
Hatton was top level fighter and I am a big fan, however he did seem to get caught up in his own hype- believing that his fight with Mayweather was for the "pound for pound world title" and all this stuff.
A top level fighter, but nowhere near P4P and there is nothing to be ashamed about for losing to Mayweather or Pac.
Re: Hattons Last Stand....
Lot of people assumed his comeback was motivated by money. Simply pointing out I don't believe that to be the casebripez wrote:I don't understand what this means ?jackukmma wrote:I always believed him when he said it was about redemption nothing else.

Re: Hattons Last Stand....
The fight against Mayweather was for the no 1 spot P4P, although not a title in such. Hatton was rightly top 10 P4P at the time, especially when you consider he beat Tszyu, who was top 5 and possibly top 3 P4P at the time.bripez wrote:I don't understand what this means ?jackukmma wrote:I always believed him when he said it was about redemption nothing else.

Re: Hattons Last Stand....
Hatton was ranked number 4 P4P by Ring in 2005 and around 8th when he fought Mayweather.
Re: Hattons Last Stand....
I still think Tszyu was past his sell by date when Hatton fought him though and on top of that im pretty sure that if had been held in a neutral venue Ricky wouldnt of got away with a lot of the rough stuff he did in that fight.expe wrote:The fight against Mayweather was for the no 1 spot P4P, although not a title in such.
