Froch v Groves *Sold Out

The MEN is already the 9th largest operational indoor arena (by capacity) in the world. The largest one in the USA only has +500 over and above the MEN's 23k. The largest indoor arena in the world has a capacity of 30,000 - this is 5k more than the second largest.

There are currently three indoor arenas under construction in the Philippines that will dwarf existing venues, with capacities of 75k, 52k. and 50k respectively, so, from a purely architectural perspective, larger capacity indoor arenas are feasible.

Economic viability is a different matter entirely.

Where would you build these super venues?
How much would they cost to build?
How long would be the return on the investment?

Don't forget the 'O2' was built at public expense as the Millennium Dome before it was leased off for buttons. From memory I think Trinity College, Cambridge are the current leaseholders - I think they paid about 20 million for it. The firm that sub lease have invested a lot more, over 300 million.

The majority of the costs of building the Manchester Arena were also picked up by the tax payer.

For an idea of potential revenue: the Dome currently shifts 1.9 million tickets per year; Manchester Arena does 1.2 million.

How feasible would a bigger arena be for the UK? We have the MEN (I know it's not called this anymore but I still call it that) in Manchester and the O2 in London which are both just under 20,000 seats for a boxing event. We have a load of 10k, 5k and under 5k arenas and halls. Do we actually have any scope for 20k+ without having to resort to football stadiums?

You could use the Millenneum Stadium in Cardiff, with the roof closed, but 72,000 would probably be too big.

I think this reflects poorly on the Hearns.
Boxing is a business and if matchroom have sold out the arena in a quarter of an hour then they have got their sums badly wrong.
If the touts are all over it as well that is another sign it is underpriced.
They may be saying 'we are looking after the fans with ticket prices starting at 30 quid ' but it looks as though most of the tickets have gone to resellers so the average fan will have to shell out a premium but the extra money will not be going back into the sport.

Agree mate, I was Row 4-5 of the upper tier at O2 Arena for Froch vs Kessler in the best block so was square on to the ring. Still ended up watching the screen as just couldn't tell when punches were landing properly or not from that distance.

Lower tier or nothing for me from now on, can't be arsed watching boxing from upper tiers of an arena just to get the atmosphere when I could sit in a bar and see it properly.

As well as the couple of thousands available through the secondary market, how many actually went to the general public?

Happens at a lot of sporting events now. Sold out, and then more become available later, usually because the 'official' touting partners are not managing to rip punters off for as much as they would have liked to.

I have a sneaky suspicion many of these went STRAIGHT to the 3rd party touting sites and thats why it supposedly sold out in 11minutes there was probably less than half the true capacity actually on sale.

A lot of these venues will have agreements with companies for corporate events so they hold tickets until the people with agreements says yay or nay, then obviously if they turn them down, they can sell them on. It's often why you see large chunks of tickets go on sale well after it's "sold out".

I would have loved to have gone to this but away anyway, by looks of it though I'd had no chance. Haye-Fury or Haye- anybody, by contrast, if it was on in my garden I'd close the curtains.

Yeah i just got some off an undercard fighter yesterday he had a range of tickets in every price range.
Glad of it really as i missed out on the initial rush
