Best Sven Ottke performances
Best Sven Ottke performances
I know Ottke was a controversial champ who only fought from Germany, and he definitely got some robbery wins late in his career when he looked past it (i.e. vs Robin Reid). But what were Ottke's best performances?
He could be a very clever (if dull) boxer with a good feel for ring geometry, and beat some good fighters like Charles Brewer, Anthony Mundine, Byron Mitchell, Glen Johnson, Silvio Branco.
comments?

Mundine was a great come from behind win, Mundine was outboxing him but Sven kept to the task and gradually worked his way into a position to release one of those hidden bombs. Mundine made a fatal mistake and BOOM! Svenni connected with a punch so devastating i forget what it was, maybe a left hook. That was Ottke's best win, as millions celebrated around the world, Sven was still champion.
P.S. His wins over Johnson and Mitchell were good too.

how is robin going to win if he isntl allowed top hit sven withtout losing a point.steve689 wrote:I was perplexed when people claimed Mitchell to be a robbery, Ottke clearly won the fight in my view. I don't think the Reid fight was a robbery either it was just the shit ref that made things totally farcical in there. Ottke is the peoples champion.
that was totally inept and probably corrupt as well. come on steve.
what pisses me off is every time Glen Johnson loses he cries robbery (apart from Hopkins and Tarver II). Sometimes the complaint is legit (i.e. Daniel Judah), but other times it's total bollocks (i.e. vs Sheika, Harmon simply outboxed him).
So was Ottke's win deserved? I hear Glen gunned for an early KO, got tired and was eventually outboxed.

I'd go for his win over Mundine. Very emphatic conclusion after trailing for the whole fight. For a noted non-puncher that was a terrific right hander timed to perfection.
Reid's got sod all to moan about, he's always pulling stunts left, right and centre.
If anyone deserves sympathy it's Mads Larsen. He seemed to beat Ottke by a mile and still came home empty handed.

I started to appreciate Ottke after seeing the late career performances of Bernard Hopkins (Allen III, DLH, Taylor). Really fussy, precise, minimal punch output. But so economical, well thought out and precise at the same time. I found Ottke's fight with David Starie unwatchable first time, but looking back it was clever how he lulled him out of it and had him totally frustrated/reaching by the end.
anyone seen the two Charles Brewer fights? How did they pan out? any info would be appreciated

Looking at his record you've got to say that beating Charles Brewer in your 13th fight is a great win , Brewer was a seasoned world champion.
Wins over Branco and Mundine were excellent as well. The knockout over Mundine is quite strange, as it doesn't appear a hard punch at all, but sparks Mundine for a few minutes

I recall Ottke dropping Thomas Tate (in the rematch) with a right to the temple also. He could be pretty accurate with that shot. It was a surprising punch, well-picked.
I'll look around for that Mundine fight. Mundine's a good fighter, too. Gave the mighty Kessler more than a few problems, though I had Kessler beating him by 3 or 4 points.

I go for the Glen Johnson fight. The same Glen Johnson who went on to beat Harding, Tarver and Jones was hopelessly overmatched during the fight's second half against a super-quick, relentless and accurate Sven Ottke. The wins over Brewer (II), Tate, Branco, or Butler were similarly clear, but Glen Johnson is better than those guys.
The Mundine fight was exciting, but in my view in showed a Sven Ottke who started to deteriorate. Instead of putting in a boxing clinic he was forced to brawl in order to win.

The scoring of the Dutch judge was ridiculous, having Kessler winning every round. It was a close, competetive affair.viciousmaussa wrote:I'll look around for that Mundine fight. As for Mundine-Ottke, Mundine was outboxing Ottke that night and making him look ponderous and old, Mundine did have two points deducted for a headbutt but i would have been surprised if anyone had Ottke ahead at the point of the stoppage. This may sound strange but maybe Ottke wasn't as feather fisted as we suspect, he could have simply fine tuned a style that worked for him i.e. Boxing clever early and avoiding shots and then turning up the pace for the second half of the fight. He never needed an explosive punch and when he did he got one versus Mundine who was only in his 10th fight or roundabout.
I thought Mads Larsen beat Ottke though.
