£50 to shop at Tescos ( PPV issue)
£50 to shop at Tescos ( PPV issue)
Would you pay £50 for the privilege of shopping in Tescos each year ??
Would you pay £40 for entry to a big boxing show , and then before the main event would you pay an extra £15 ??
Why then would you pay a SKY Sports subscription and then pay another fee for a PPV event ??
It's simply greed, and the only way to stop is not to pay up. They don't do it for any other sport. I wonder why ??? Could it be that if they tried it for football they publicity would be so bad it could back fire on them?
I have paid it before ( what a mug I am) but NEVER again.

Re: £50 to shop at Tescos ( PPV issue)
I don't have sky and it just makes me go to a bar with mates instead of staying in
Re: £50 to shop at Tescos ( PPV issue)
I don't see the problem to be honest
There is no huge budget from Sky for boxing so this will only have a set figure for each show.
PPV shows generate the bigger money which makes it easier to get the bigger fights on over here. If there was no PPV the fights would all be in Germany or USA where the bigger TV companies are. For PPV in the states is $70 for a fight so £15 isn't to bad if you couldn't get a ticket to the fight its not that expensive.
Get a few mates round all chuck in or buy you some beer/food then its covered.

Re: £50 to shop at Tescos ( PPV issue)
What has shopping at Tesco got to do with anything? Terrible analogy.
Re: £50 to shop at Tescos ( PPV issue)
I'm curious how Germany have such a big boxing budget, are there more boxing fans in Germany? The likes of the Sturm and the Klitschko's have been making big money for years, in not the most exciting fights, whereas Froch has been in exciting fights for a while now and is only just making very good money.bigB wrote:I don't see the problem to be honest

Re: £50 to shop at Tescos ( PPV issue)
I agree with you, it's just complete greed. I'm very close to cancelling my entire Sky Subscription due to greed of television companies. There's absolutely no need for Premiership footballers pocketing over £1m a month, and certainly no need for fighters like Mayweather and Pacquiao picking up in excess of £25m for 1 fight.
Ultimately it's paid for by the viewers.
I pay a fortune for Sky Sports, yet when i go to tune into some big game like Man City v Chelsea they say, sorry, this is BT's new channel now, this will cost ANOTHER subscription. I feel like watching some boxing, sorry, you'll need to fork out over & above the SkySports package for allegedly please.
The whole things a god damn rip-off where consumers get nothing close to value for money. The only hope that a hint of fairness is restored comes from illegal streams. Look what illegal downloading did to the music industry - it cleaned it up to a certain extent. I remember singles used to be about £3 now most of them are about 60p or something, and we have alot of free streams like Spotify which use subscriptions and advertising because otherwise the industry wouldn't compete with illegal downloading. I seen in the news the Premier League got an injunction out against an illegal streaming site, so it seems like the fight is on... hopefully the big broadcasters realise that people are getting sick of their hard earned cash resulting in 250k p/w wage packets.

Re: £50 to shop at Tescos ( PPV issue)
I won't pay for sky sports, and I won't pay for a PPV unless I think it is really worth it - when a big fight comes, I watch it with my mate and give him half the cash for the PPV - fact is, fighters greed and the support of the networks is what has caused this situation - if people are prepared to hand over their money, fighters and networks will take it.
Vote with your wallet and don't buy the fights, it's the only way.
The situation where you pay a specialist subscription, and then on top for PPV is ridiculous frankly.
The situation with football is different, the rights were broken up, to prevent Sky from totally cornering the market on football, BT bought ESPN uk out, and took over their TV rights for premiership football.

The equivalent analogy would be if Tesco were the only supermarket, they charged you to enter the store, and then charged you to access the aisle that the product you wanted was in.
I rarely bother with PPV, as I'll either be at the fight in question, or it's be in the middle of the night and I'd fall asleep and miss it anyway. Last one I got was Haye v Harrison and all I got was 30 seconds of boxing, 7 minutes of two black guys looking at each other proceeded by 2 and a half hours of Mcguigan and Nelson fuckin around with a giant iPad.
Re: £50 to shop at Tescos ( PPV issue)
I always pay-per-view, cos if its a good fight I buy a ticket and go and watch it. same with the footy, why sit on your harris and watch it at home when you can go down the ground? anyone who watches all this crap at home and winges needs to get out the house a bit more.

Re: £50 to shop at Tescos ( PPV issue)
Personally I don't think they charge enough. It should be £50 for something like Froch/Groves, £15 for your standard Saturday night shows, and £5 for each Ringside show
For allegedly, it should be £50 for their middle of the night supershows, £10 for its usual Saturday evening shows, and £6 every Monday night for the Bunce show.
The problem with boxing is that all the fans are tight buggers

Re: £50 to shop at Tescos ( PPV issue)
The platform / technology as we know it, is dying out.
In approximately 3-4 years from now Sky will unlikely be a one-stop shop for all your TV needs because everything is going online or via Smart televisions.
Their channel bundles shall be available as a content-provider, but HBO series you shall be buying direct via a HBO app on your TV.
The amount of late teens / early 20's people with a Netflix online account compared to a Sky box & subscription is light years apart.
Sky know this, hence they're pushing their Now TV channel and the £9.99 box that converts it to HDMI for current generation smart televisions.
All the top investment experts like The Motley Fool and even people like Warren Buffet are plunging billions into web TV companies like Amazon's TV venture and content providers like Discovery etc.
It's also the reason why Google has quietly bought thousands of miles of dark fibre (ultra fast cabling that's not been activated yet) across dozens of states in America.
Sky will possibly be like the old British Telecom landlines soon, when Orange, Vodaphone , Nokia and Motorola emerged from nowhere and left them for dust.
The good news is that Sky-produced shows will hopefully still continue. But American series etc that are bought-in might not be exclusive any more soon.
Things are changing fast , just wait and see.

I like that personally. It will be a truely global marketplace. The only down side I can possibly envision although this is a wider issue is we could end up with one culture for the whole or something. I hope that wouldnt happen as it would be boring as shit.G0mez wrote:The platform / technology as we know it, is dying out.

I really think the Coldwell Boxing app is the way forward, it just needs some more publicity and then of course that people actually start paying for it. I think each event is supposed to be about 2.50 or something incredibly cheap like that.
I've used it a few times by just plugging my phone into the tele box. Picture quality is good and the commentators (Jamie & Ryan) are top drawer.
There are things that could be better without too much expense laid out but for what seems like a low budget outfit, it's bloody brilliant!

Content will be, as ever, be king. As you say, WEBTV is the way forward - we provide training to telecoms engineers, and we are doing big business training people on IP video streaming for web based applications.G0mez wrote:The platform / technology as we know it, is dying out.

Eventually, people are going to just pay for the content they want, be that an individual channel, series, event etc.
Once the content providers are able to go direct to the consumers direct, without intermediaries like sky - the prices will fall - eventually the technology will be so widespread, that boxing promoters can just pay a fee to a company to film the content, and distribute it via the web via a turnkey solution - the technology is already there, it's just about it becoming simple enough for it to be acquired without having to have prior knowledge.
The likes of Cisco and Ericsson are now big into the business end of Video on demand, and where they go, others will follow. Sky are already trying to get in on the act with their new mobile TV offering, SkyGo, which doesn't require a sky subscription, as they realise the days are numbered when they will be able to collect whopping subscription fees from their punters in order to get just the few things they actually want to watch.
PPV boxing may well get cheaper as there won't be so many grubby mitts getting their slice, but it's not going anywhere, as how else are boxers going to get the multi million pound paydays they want?
