Will James Toney win Prizefighter?
Re: Will James Toney win Prizefighter?
If an ancient, shot, gruesomely overweight punch drunk 5'9" ex middleweight wins then that tells you a whole lot about the quality of the other participants.
Re: Will James Toney win Prizefighter?
Drug cheats or not, if they have served there time and the board approve of it what's the problem ?
Re: Will James Toney win Prizefighter?
I think its the point they havnt served there time thats the problem.
Re: Will James Toney win Prizefighter?
Still if theres a loophole and its been found then you cant blame the guys for using it
Re: Will James Toney win Prizefighter?
The 'loophole' for Larry was grassing up a load of other boxers for juicing as well. Good that they've been caught now, but it still seems a slimy thing to do. I wonder what the testing will be like for this Prizefighter? Will there be any?jonp wrote:Still if theres a loophole and its been found then you cant blame the guys for using it
Re: Will James Toney win Prizefighter?
He's terribly shot.
I'd expect someone like Sam Sexton to beat him.

Which fighters did he (allegedly) grass? I haven't heard of any bans.clopixolacuphase wrote:The 'loophole' for Larry was grassing up a load of other boxers for juicing as well. James Toney? How does he get in when the BBBofC wouldn't allow 'The White Rhino' in a couple of years ago.

"Last year he befriended another small-hall fighter, Craig Windsor, on Facebook and they discussed steroids. Olubamiwo then passed on the details to UK Anti-Doping. And when Windsor later pleaded guilty, and was banned for three years and nine months, Olubamiwo's sentence was slashed. As a strategy it was not so much float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, as sing like a canary. But it worked... The problem in Olubamiwo's case is that he has not offered up a Mr Big, but a 5ft 8in super-middleweight with a 9-2 win/loss record. From afar it looks as if the sport is merely swapping one confirmed drug user for another."
I guess 'grassing up a load of other boxers' isn't quite the truth. He grassed up one. That's enough to get his 3 year ban slashed. I didn't like it.

Re: Will James Toney win Prizefighter?
You are completely right, I had forgotten all about Toney's drugs use in the past. Maybe I had tried to block it out my mind as I always thought he was a really talented fighter.keithmoonhangover wrote:Why? Toney is a drugs cheat as well. Why is it alright for him to fight and not Larry?doctorboxing wrote:It would be sad to see him getting beat by people he would have had no trouble with a few years ago. He could literally have won this with one arm in his prime. I still imagine he will be very hard to hit for the 3 rounders.
Also dissapointing that Larry is getting a pay day. I have no interest in seeing him back in a ring.
Neither should be given the shot. Boxing just isn't dealing with the drug problems it has. Athletics always gets a bad rep for being full of drug cheats when in reality they are one of the best sports at trying to weed out the cheats.

Re: Will James Toney win Prizefighter?
Been tweeting Shannon Briggs, he's back in the gym & got his weight down and is right up for Prizefighter. He's been out a while but can't be anymore shot than Toney and would be a very interesting addition if Eddie to consider it.
Re: Will James Toney win Prizefighter?
Toney may have had a medical explanation for his use of steroids - but a sad medical explanation.
There was a news clip (from the states) a few years ago that showed that Toney, through years of getting hit, had damaged his pituirity gland - which controls the release of hormones (e.g. Testosterone).
So - Toney "naturally" produces less testorestorne than the average, you need testosterone to fight.... so perhaps why Toney took supplements as a compensation.
However BBBoC should effing note.... programme was years old and SHOWED Toney had damage to a major part of his brain.
I think it is very different to Larry's case - a fighter who has NEVER fought clean!

Yes I saw this, he was medically prescribed nandrolone, a synthetic form of testosterone to compensate for his lack of serum testosterone - as you say, that was many years ago now, and he's taken way more shots in sparring and in the ring since then.

The thing is, you can get a doctors note and get medically passed to take other things to help with test levels apart from Anabolic Roids but Toney isn't the brightest spark

Which is pretty much what happens in every other drug bust (performance enhancing or illegal drug).

Damaged pituitary gland....yeah right.jamesmcdonnell wrote:stujones wrote:Toney may have had a medical explanation for his use of steroids - but a sad medical explanation.

Lack of natural testosterone levels after previously healthy adult levels the years preceding is the number one side effect of..taking anabolic steroids. You need to run PCT and HGH correctly to restore your natural testosterone levels after taking synthetic testosterone in steroids. My guess is he was taking gear for years and then got the gear legally after his own body slowed down its natural testosterone levels after years of steroid use.

Shouldn't judge on this I know but does Toney look like a person who roids it up, or does he look like someone with a Thyroid problem? (which could be the consequence of a pituitary gland)
I hope the BBBoC view this clip from 2007!!! Memory problems, attention problems.
The man shouldn't be near a ring.
