Jamie McDonnell splits with Dennis Hobson

Their fight was close, Jamie won in my eyes (was ringside so had a good view) and I don't think either have improved that much since then.

That said, I'm not sure Hall would have beaten Ceja, albeit narrowly, although he did win against a top ranked IBF dude (Mexican?) on the UC so I've no real issue with him getting a vacant title shot.

It's that age old argument of what makes somebody world class.

You could argue that just because McDonnell won a world title, it doesn't make him world class because Ceja is still somewhat of an unknown quantity. He's not "even" the 3rd best bantamweight in his own country and you could probably make an argument for him not beating a top 100 fighter in the world prior to him facing McDonnell.

So, like, what's his ranking based on? IBF politrics? Holding minor IBF trinkets? On that basis Hall's in good company.

McDonnell did it the "hard" way, the old domestic titles route, so by that token you can't begrudge Hall a shot either (given that Ceja didn't go through a mandatory).

You'd have to think Hobson sat back in his leather chair and let out a big satisfied chuckle to himself at how it's all ended up.

Don't know what this has to do with the topic, but seeing as I read it I might as well comment, Carl Frampton not wanting anything to do with kid G is laughable ! Levels above.

We're discussing if the McDonnell's have been well advised. Galahad will be Frampton's mandatory soon. Time will tell if Frampton chooses to box him.

The Board have already made their position very clear Josco.
Jamie in contract with Hobson.
If he wants to challenge it, he should know the process or at least those "advising" him should.
If a Promotor walked away from a fighter mid contract some of the people here would be joining the lynch mob.
Why are those very same people sympathetic when it's the other way round ?
He's made his bed - now lie in it.

I think it's rather amusing myself. It does seem a bit like karma to me even if I dont particularily believe in that sort of thing.

McDonnell v ceja was a tremendous fight. it was brutal and McDonnell pulled off some outstanding boxing, especially in the 12th, responding to a fierce 11th round onslaught from ceja. this was a world class contest, between 2 men ranked in ring mag's top 10.

how the hell did it come to McDonnell losing his belt outside the ropes? what a miserable turn of events, given the improvements he's made in 3 brutal 12 round bouts (jamoye, hall, ceja).

could it be down to hobson having no TV deal? not easy to stage a world title fight without television. prime time's not the best outlet, is it? how many bought McDonnell-ceja PPV? is this a consequence of sky's favouritism of matchroom?

He refused to do business with matchroom, he could have had sky for the first world title fight. Judging from McDonnells statement it is his unwillingness to work with them recently (chose BN instead) which has cost him McDonnell.

Though i am sure he has his reasons, Matchroom wanting too much probably being the case.

i was worried after McDonnell won the title. how much had it cost getting ceja over here? how were they going to stage the 1st defense? immediate talk of "America" also gave me concerns - the issue was how the heck was another title fight going to get staged at home, without a TV deal. it's still shocking that Jamie's ended up getting stripped. a world title is a big issue and something should've been done to prevent this - anything.

how much will McDonnell be worth to matchroom, afterward?
