I would add Leotis Martin too. Leotis Martin was a decent fighter as well. He knocked out Sonny Liston in his final bout.

Jimmy Ellis definitely would've beaten Lubbers clearly.

That's about what I would expect too. The best bet of beating him was Spinks in my view.

I wouldn't be shocked to see him stop David Haye.

Jimmy's 'KO 1' over Johnny Persol at Madison Square Garden {March 22, 1967}

Fastest hands ever for a Heavyweight, especially in the '1st-Round'.

That knockout of Persol was a real game changer for Ellis and Persol. It got Ellis in the WBA tournament.

Persol was on a real hot streak coming into that fight but Ellis overwhelmed him.

I know...But Ellis was slick too...That's what makes it a fight...

He was pretty slick, he was a bit of a different type of slick though using his legs more. Ellis always struck me as a lesser version of Ali. He had a similar fighting style, he just wasn't as good.

Considering he was skin and bones as a middleweight and it was only his 17th fight, I'd say Jimmy did pretty well.

Whoever managed him in his middleweight years sucked; Holly Mims in your 6th fight? Henry Hank in his 13th fight? George Benton a few fights after he fought Carter . . .
And he was never stopped by any of them. Always went the distance. Tough guy.

In what is actually a pretty decent but forgotten matchup is his rematch with Frazier in 1975. Ellis like in the first fight looks very good in the opening rounds (incredibly fast hands) but also like in the first fight wears out from Joe's pressure but ultimately takes a longer beating.

He did have an interesting career. He certainly was thrown to the wolves as a middleweight. Interesting that he didn't stay at lightheavyweight for long. His career did seem to flourish with Dundee. Also interesting that he although he wasn't known as as a bug puncher, he did deck and hurt Bonavena who had a good chin. He also scored several first round knockouts.

I also always thought it was neat that he won his last fight. So many good fighters don't. After to losing the 2nd time to Frazier, he fought one more time. He beat a journeyman to go out a winner.

Always thought would have been a great bout at 175 lbs. to 180 lbs.

That's a tough one to call, I'd probably have to favor Foster as Ellis didn't come into his best form until he was a Heavyweight, but it's an interesting matchup all the same.

I'm pretty sure the reason that James 'Jimmy' Ellis took the bout with
Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter in February 1964 at Madison Square Garden was......... 'MONEY'.

Jimmy hadn't had a bout in 5-Months {since September 1963}.

Not every boxer had the 'backing, support and management' as Cassius Clay....

Maybe that's because every boxer doesn't coming home carrying Olympic Gold, Il Manichino.
