Trying to get record included

Post by JohnGuthrie »

I've got a few mid-level promoters willing to put me on their cards this fall but I'm trying to clear this up so we/they can use the record in promoting me. I know I will never be a world beater. But I know I can be competitive if matched up right. And even small fights in Texas fighting in front of a thousand people is still better than in my gym with nobody watching. The following is what I've been able to put together record wise from notes and memory. Thanks for your time. John

Allow me to apologize ahead of time for the awkwardness of this post my friend.
It's taken a couple/few go rounds for me to realize that this thread is all in good fun, yeah?
Because, I've actually cross referenced your work & not only are there/were there no such heavyweights active during the time periods which you state these contests took place, there were no recorded professional boxing cards held in or around those areas that you indicate. Not is/was there a pro fighter or pro heavyweight by the name of John Guthrie campaigning at that time.
So, as someone who has actually fought a pair of professional fights back in '89 & '90, but is having a difficult time verifying that they did, indeed, take place & I'd very much like them to be recorded as such, I feel like a hypocrite calling you out.
Judging by what you've presented us with here, it appears to be more in the lines of a hoax. For, what? I have no clue, perhaps just "bragging rights"? But, really, you should just give it up as the joke it is.

Jim, I appreciate you taking the time to read my post. I saw you got your bouts included. Congratulations on that. I obviously respect your comments and realize the frustration you must of had in not having your record included in the first place. As I'm dealing with the same frustration. But for you to assume this is a joke or for bragging rights I felt I needed to reply to your post. As I'm sure you already know a professional boxing match is in it's purest definition is one in which the boxers get paid. I got paid to fight. Actually made decent cash a few times. I posted this to try and get help. Not to be thought of as a joke. These fights took place when I was 18 and 19 years old. I'm now 40 and am on track to box again this fall. I have a small boxing gym at my home and nothing about this is a joke. If I wanted bragging rights I would of came up with something more impressive than a fight in a mall parking lot. Not to mention a couple of Thursday night fights at a dilapidated Sportatorium with less than 100 people watching. You are correct that some of the opponents listed are not found anywhere in any listed records. But a couple of them do have pro records. Either on Boxrec or in the old Flash updates. It wasn't until 1994 that ABC started requiring sanctioning of bouts to be considered official. Thanks again for reading the post and I hope this clears things up a little.

Just a quick note. Thanks to all the people who looked at this post. I'm mailing in my application for a combative sports license in Texas this week. I assume they will not recognize these old bouts but hope they will. I appreciate this forum allowing this post to exist so no matter what happens in the future no one can say I tried to hide my previous bouts or experience level. Thanks again.......John

Do you have any evidence at all? Even a newspaper clip? Who else fought on these cards? Certainly papers covered the shows. If you left the country you must have passport or tax records?

Sorry for delay. Was first trying to locate scrapbook before I responded. I know I have at least two clippings taped together with other stuff on the backside of an old poster. They are hardly noteworthy. They read more like a baseball boxscore. But if I remember correctly they do list all the bouts with names of other boxers. Plus have a flyer/poster from the fight at the mall. Plan on putting my hands on these items this weekend. Not really much but where should I send the items?
Thanks...........John
