Alvarado v Provodkinov

Mikey Alvarado is one tough fighter, I really want to see him do well. He's as brave as hell, but his manager is even braver.

Two back to back wars with a pile driving hitter like Brandon Rios, and they follow it straight up by matching him with a beast like Provodkinov: the type of fighter most people will be avoiding without a doubt.

Imagine a WBO UK world champ getting matched like that ? Never happen.

The Siberian Rocky looks as hard as nails, I reckon he wins this.

team Alvarado were holding out for more money, for a while. this fight was not made quickly.

always felt provodnikov would hammer Alvarado. didn't think mike could match him inside. didn't like the way he boxed v rios 2nd fight - all that stance changing and poor balance was going to be disastrous vs provodnikov, with his composure, his straight, short punches, his deft timing of shots, his constant forward momentum. Alvarado's shiftiness vs provodnikov's consistency - kind of reminded me of andy morris getting ground down the steadier but more consistent crolla.

glad to see the Siberian get the stoppage vs a very tough guy.

The Russian is a frightening prospect for anyone, unless you're a slick Mayweather type boxer, so it seemed such a harsh choice for Mike's first defence.

I mean he really earned that world title, so as a reward he gets his big home coming fight: in a town where they never have boxing, but turn out in huge numbers for their unlikely home grown hero - but they match him just about as tough as humanly possible. Now who the hell does that ?! Talk about a balls up by his manger or promoter - he needs to fire the lot of them, trainer included ( after those dumb post fight comments ).

And while he's at it, fire the dumb ref as well - asking him three times on his stool if he wanted to quit.....Jesus, like he hadn't taken enough ! Do the guy a favour and stop it for him, for christ's sake - he was walking concussed in the last 2 rounds, didn't really know where he was - so dangerous but the corner and ref were OBLIVIOUS.

yes that was sad. that he was allowed to give the impression of quitting, a position that graham Houston wrote a fighter should never be placed in.

I think Alvarado knew what he was in for. with the weight as well, he wanted as much out of that fight as he could.

pre fight, ppl said he was scared. and now post fight, ppl say he's a quitter. it is a shame, but I am pleased for provodnikov. I was worried the Siberian would take too long to get off, allow the fight to drift (as in the mid sections vs Bradley, an opponent he may have stopped down at 140).

Oh yes, just read Graham Houston's report now, bang on as usual. And so right about corners and / or referees making the right decision for an exhausted, beaten fighter - save his pride and not force him to bail out himself. Mainly for his health, but also to save him from all the complete numb skull idiots out there calling him a quitter.

yeah. Alvarado has demonstrated tremendous bravery in wars vs Prescott, who was battering him before Alvarado came on; and the 2 with rios.

anyway, my feeling all the way was that, rather than being a great matchup, Alvarado was going to be a great showcase for provodnikov.

hope provodnikov can get some good fights, and go on a great run. for me, he's a Siberian, 10-pound version of the great Israel Vazquez. I hope he can find his Rafael marquez (i.e. a great rival of outstanding offensive ability).

BTW I see provodnikov as superior to Garcia and matthysse. more compact and on his game.

1) Agree wholeheartedly.

2) Disagree, though Ruslan has a more compact physique Danny Garcia has tighter punches and a better technique. Ruslan is a very impressive specimen but Garcia isn't a weakling; that bout would be class and though I won money on Prov last week I'd put money of Garcia in that one.
