Had Hagler beat....

Post by cybox »

Had Hagler beat Leonard in 1987 lets see who some of his other defenses may have been against and how he would have done.

I'm sure after Leonard the public would have been craving a rematch with Thomas Hearns

1987 Hargler-Hearns II

1988 Hagler - Kalambay
1988 Hagler - Barkley
1988 Hagler - McCallum

how am i pissing?? i was simply stating the truth. hagler was going to retire after mugabi, and retired after leonard.

had hagler added leonard to his resume, i am guessing he would have left the game.

or how about the fella who was next in line for a title shot before ray leonard turned up - bomber graham.
hagler lost WBA/ IBF recognition for not facing herol.
hagler is a true, true great of the ring but i think at that age he might have struggled against a prime graham who was a lot more elusive that an old leonard.
graham was very unlucky to lose a split decision to a prime mccallum ( graham was deducted a point for `attemting to throw` mccallum) around that time too.

I have to say that the Marvin that Ray beat was too poor to beat any decent fighter, so even Graham would have a chance to dance and outbox him. But had Marvin showed any touch of his former self, Graham would not last the distance.....

I started a thread on this subject a while ago which caused som heated debate. :box:

As for this thread, if Hagler wanted one last big payday then a Hearns rematch may well have been his pick. If however he just wanted a more low risk fight to add another defence to his legacy then I think he would have fought someone like Frank Tate.

Michael Nunn vs Terry Norris

Post by cybox »

Would Terry's pressing and power be too much for a slick Nunn or would he be able to elude Terrible Terry and win a decision much like he did in the Barkley fight?

So many people when they think of Hagler remember the blow out of Hearns, the war with Mugabi and controversial decision to Leonard. Hagler never liked fighting guys who made him lead. In almost all of his defences except for 2 (Duran & Leonard) Hagler managed to get the other guy to lead.

I think at this stage in his career Graham, Kalambay, McCallum would have all have given Hagler a hard time.

He would have continued for 2 more fights to break Monzon's record? Sorry, is that right or would have beating Leonard equalled the record?

I think he would have fought Michael Nunn in 1988 & probably lost a decision.

He was painfully slow against Leonard & although Nunn's feather fists couldn't have hurt the iron jawed Hagler, his tremedous speed & skill would have befuddled an ageing Marvin.

haglers later defences looked good on paper but in reality i think he was on the wane and was avoiding graham, hearns though exceptional, was stepping up to fight for the middleweight title in his first fight at the weight, mugabi had an impressive string of ko`s but against nobody`s really and leonard hadnt fought , never mind at middle, but for three years after eye trouble!
when graham lost to kalambay it was a massive shock, and at the time graham was just trying to stay busy waiting for a title shot and he just underestimated kalambay plain and simple, graham never saw the fight as a career defining one, he probably became blaise because it seemed like he was being frozen out of the title picture. graham brought his A game to the prime mccallum fight and was more than unlucky imo, he put mccallum down legit and more than held his own but was deducted a point for throwing mccallum to the floor.
i think around the time hagler fought leonard both graham and mccallum would have beaten an old marvin.

I accept what you say about Graham but don't underestimate kalambay. he was a very awkward and tough customer. Marvin may have caught up with Herol over 15 but it would have been close and I see Graham being ahead and just needing to get to the final bell. McCallum had the jaw and defence to be on his feet at the end and should have been given a fight.

Do you think Hagler would ahve caught Ray ahd the fight been over 15 and not 12 rounds.
