Get Watt and Halling out....

Post by Jeff Thomas »

They are absolutely terrible, it makes and absolute mockery of all the hard work the likes of Ed Robinson and co do when you've got two negative, boring, cliche spewing commentators saying the same shit week in week out.

I love the set up at sky now they've got everything right apart from the commentary and that is surely the most important thing. Halling is just cliche, cliche, cliche and then Watt is just form an opinion before the fight... Then spend 12 rounds telling everyone why your opinion was right, its tiresome and shit.

I didn't mind Andy Clarke, he's probably not quite my cup of tea but why on earth is Ian Darke not on the panel. He's easily the best and most interesting to listen to. I actually hate the Sky commentary and it actually ruins the fights and makes them unrewatchable.

Stick Watt in the studio if you have to keep him there. Maybe have Halling do the red button or something.

You see SO many comments saying how shit it is. Come on SKY listen....

IMO Jim Watt is the best out of the lot of them on Sky

I dont get as upset about Nelson,McCrory,Piper etc as some but im not massive fans of them,i just dont get that fussed about it all,i mean even if your someones biggest fan,you arent gonna agree with everything they say so i just get on with it

I will add that i like Moore and Oliver next after Watt as do most on this forum but i can guarentee if they were to do the job as long as the other fellas, people will be on forums constantly moaning about them also so.....

Im gonna go against the grain here but as much as i like Ed as a person and he,s good at ringside interviews and his bit on Ringside,im not convinced with him as a presenter,im sure he,ll get better with experience but Dave Darts is a lot better IMO

Your right mate they are terrible and they are so biased literally every fight. I don't mind watt that much but galling ruins fights on a regular basis he is so sh!t I can't stand him, bring back Ian darke and also get rid of john McDonald if that's his name he is a horrendous ring announcer and gives away the result by his tone and wording every time

It is bad that Halling has become one of the main boxing commentators on Sky. He just doesn't have the ability, or enthusiasm for the sport that we need. He actually makes you want to switch the sound off with his constant droning. I understand that he is a professional and probably a nice bloke but he is a major 'NO' from me.

Jim Watt, does do as you mention, takes his stance and stands firm throughout the fight he's currently calling but I think Jim is passionate and very knowledgeable, and to be honest, I've heard him for that long, it would probably sound a bit weird without him! Jim does have more good nights than bad for me as well.

Yes, we want realism and the truth but a balance is needed. Calling a fight so negative can spoil it for the viewer, plus, a little bit of humor wouldn't be a bad thing. I think Halling is so serious it becomes depressing at times. Maybe that is part of the problem, Watt and Halling are both so serious.

It would be good for Sky to keep changing it up, virtually every week. Macklin was decent calling the Golovkin fight last night and a change. I'm sure others would be queuing up to give it a go for a night, Ricky Hatton for example would be a good listen. I'm actually suprised that Andy Scott hasn't been more involved as well.

Why not have a team of three commentators like a lot of US fights? Two commentators and an ex fighter.

I guess the best paring of the regulars they have at the moment would be Darke and Watt, although I don't mind Halling either.

Just as long as it's not Rawling.

Maybe Sky could get a judge to do the Lederman with the scorecard.

Halling was actually quite good in the studio when he used to do the NFL a few years back. So he can do it. I like Watt the analyst, but he loses me too many times as a commentator.
I love Nelson, think Bomber has done well when he has stepped in too - as has Smith.

Halling just seems to jizz in his pants if a certain fighter he likes is in the ring and in the process seems to disregard everything the opponent is doing. The way he talks about Luke Campbell at times and "how fast he is" you'd think you were watching a prime Roy Jones jnr.

Dead Mouse wrote:I disagree about Halling's ability and enthusiasm, he has covered the sport for quite a few newspapers and also still chips in for 'Scene, so there's definitely still a lot of enthusiasm there. I like Nick, obviously I'm biased as I work for the same online publication as him, but I liked him even before dealing with him and discovering that he's one of the sport's many good guys.
I think my enthusiasm remark may have been a little harsh - I think the problem is that he's just not very good.

Mcdonald is the worst. I dont know how a guy who makes living out of something as simple as basically reading someone's name out can fornicate it up so often.

John McDonald was fvcking hilarious last night trying to pronounce Samir Mouneimne

AAHH MAMMA MIA :DDD

But i do agree its unprofessional for one of the so called top MCs getting it wrong, you could understand the small hall show announcers getting it wrong trying to say some Lithuanians who theyve never heard of,s name but Mouneimne was fighting for a Commonwealth title on a big Sky show for pete sake :shame:

McDonald is awful...when announcing a decision, he ruins it by either A) sounding over excited when the home fighter gets it or B) sounding like he is about to kill himself if the away fighter gets it. Ruins any suspense

Michael Buffer's routine is as cheesy as they come but bar the "Darren Baker" farce you rarely see him making mistakes.

For a start the pair of them together talk too much for my liking and Watt, who I can usually take or leave, seems to think he is the last word in how to referee a fight.

I recall Quigg-Salinas and Watt commenting on Quigg finding himself on the canvas and declaring that as the referee had (in Watt's opinion) correctly declared it no knockdown that this meant the referee wasn't biased. Why biased? and not inept or just mistaken? and if anything wasn't he more likely to be biased towards Quigg, the home fighter?

At another fight (possibly Brook-Senchenko?) he commented that he had fears the referee wasn't going to stop the fight at the right time due to his lack of refereeing experience. In comparison, how much refereeing experience has Watt had.

Been making loads of mistakes recently.... Called the Sturm vs soliman fight wrong and adamek vs Cunningham.

Jimmy Lennon jnr is the man. Don't think I've ever heard him make a mistake. I like Thomas trieber also. Clearly mimics Lennon, but that ain't a bad call. Genuine fight fan also, he's a half decent commentator.

Would love to see sky poach Rosenthal.... He could do the presenting and the commentating with watt. All we need is the old music and it would be the good old days again.

Going to be a bit controversial here and say that I thought Adam smith was getting better until he cut down on his on screen stuff. Now wrong with enthusiam.

He looked really poor, was blowing out his arse after 4 rounds because he was swinging wildly with every shot. He won a couple early on work rate, but his technique is awful, swings a hook from the hip and his stance changes, then throws another big hook from the same stance, once Warrington worked him out he was comfortable. Warrington stopped him in the 12th, hurt him with a right, a few more heavy shots and with Mouneimne looking exhausted the referee rightly stepped in and waved it off.

Watt has good days and bad days for me, gives some decent insight sometimes but occasionally throws in a shocker where he decides something is happening early on and then clings doggedly too it despite the opposite unravelling in front of his eyes.

Halling is just genuinely spoiling fights for me now, absolutely terrible. Sorry if you read this board john, but there you go .

I really wish they'd give Mike Costello a chance, does fantastic commentarys on five live and just has one of those distinctive voices.

His calling of froch-taylor was just brilliant... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSq2j33HMjI
