Lets be honest, nelson isnt the best. I vote ed robinson to present the whole thing. We want a show about boxing, not wise cracks about how crap nelson was in his day.

They've done that to death. Getting dull hearing it every week.

totally agree and I think the way Smith and Nelson tried to build the tension between Froch and Groves was embarrassing - 'is it alright back there, are they behaving themselves' etc I know it's about building the fight but that was lame imo
Nelson is clearly a good bloke but Ed Robinson would be much better. I actually think toe 2 Toe podcast is better than Ringside in a lot of ways

With you on that, I’m sure Nelson is a lovely guy and all that but I’d much rather listen to Robinson. He’s relaxed, knowledgeable, knows when to shut up when an interesting point is being made and when to cut in when someone is waffling, that’s a real skill. In fact I’d love if the Ringside pairing was completely shaken up and the two replaced. I’m sure Smith wouldn’t be a turkey voting for Christmas but wouldn’t he be better focusing on improving the content and quality of the output of the department rather that getting so involved in front of the camera as well.

I agree with this, I like Nelson and think he seems a really good bloke but I don't like to see the way he and others always make jokes at his expense, especially given the route he took to becoming a success which showed real character.

Neither Smith nor Nelson look good during the bits where they rip into Nelson’s career. The WBO presenting him with a belt was a nice touch, it should have been used as a recap for some of his most memorable nights, but they just ripped the piss out of it instead. It was a poo thing to do, with or without Nelson’s consent.
Great minds and all that.... Couldn't agree more with the WBO thing, out of order really. I'm all for self-deprecation - I am from Middlesbrough after all and I like 'scrapings' with my chips - but I'm not comfortable with the idea that he becomes some kind of joke figure, especially to younger fans coming through who know little about his career. He deserves better.

I'm sure Johnny Nelson is assertive enough to speak out if he finds it uncomfortable; he seems to have a good perspective on his career and his progression, far worse boxers than Nelson are incredibly touchy and precious about their achievements and have an excuse for every loss or blip. It shows a lot of character to be able to poke fun at yourself and it shows confidence that when the 'laughs' are done his achievements stand.

Yeah I agree. Purely in the sense that he can laugh at himself. It's a good character trait. Doesnt take himself too seriously. Im pretty sure he knows he wasnt the greatest fighter there's ever been but at the same time he's happy with what he achieved. The ifilm london interviews really show him in a good light. Seems a totaly different guy to what we see on sky which is understandable :)

I don't think Glen McCrory would be able to poke fun at himself and have others laugh at him week in and week out, he seems a little more brittle than Nelson.

love nelson's banter and his insights, but the too-tight shirts are a bit off-putting.

There's nothing wrong in probing & asking to know a fighters inner thoughts. Max kellerman does the face off which gets plenty of views, fans love it the psychological warfare can be more intresting then the fights at times.
I felt nelson was slightly patronising towards jg I don't think there was any intent .

I'm not a fan of too tight tee shirts but Nelson clearly continues to llve a healthy life and exercise hard; if you've got it flaunt it as the saying goes; (that's why I wear skin tight jeans :OhYes: )

Hmm that's pretty interesting. I have to admit, he grates on me a little bit when I watch him in interviews. There's other british trainers out there that I prefer.

You dont have to be liked to do your job, I think hes had a great year and im pleased he has a WC in his camp. Its been deserved, he seems to be building a good stable with a bright future .... Def on top at the moment.

He seems to be alright with his boxers, they seem to respect and like him; maybe that's the 'problem' others have with him?

You've a good point, very good boxers do not stay at a gym with a trainer if he doesn't know what he's doing.

(It's a shame Billy Graham had a gut full of the sport and packed in; he knew more about boxing than just putting padding on and letting Hatton whack him around; he was a link to Phil Martin and had a long apprenticeship; it's a shame the knowledge is lost).
