algar smith, a traveller and rather handy puncher, was in the army in 1952 with my dad who was also a fair cutey in the ring. my dad was only about 21 at the time and due to the illness of the regular army trainer was put in charge of training for the day. that day he was putting the fellas through their paces and happened to notice one bloke not exactly trying very hard to raise his knees to his chest as the other lads were doing. so he gave the dark haired gentleman a right old earful and told him to get his f....ing legs up. what he didn't know was that this slack trainer was none other than Algar Smith, whose pro record displays about 15 straight ko wins with almost none going past the 3rd round. fortunately no blows were landed upon my father after his foolhardy tearing off mr smith a strip. but this was only because my dad was a popular guy and a good few vest clad soldiers rallied to prevent a certain beating.
does anyone know anything of the dangerous Algar Smith? is he still about? is it now safe enough to criticize him in the gym?
let me know
