The night Eddie Doyle fought Mcarthur I was in the row behind an extremely drunk Doyle fan. So drunk that there was empty spaces all around him (which hadnt been empty previous to him parking his cheeks). He was shouting 'Hit him with your left eddie' then when a left was thrown he shouted 'no, your other left eddie' and to top it off..... It wasnt even the Doyle fight that was on yet!

Last year one of my mates labelled David Price sh*t because he only won a bronze medal in the olympics.

I referred to him how a certain Floyd Mayweather Jr acheived the same feat in 1996 .

I had a conversation a couple of times with somebody who doesn't watch boxing, who swears blind that Frank Bruno was an awful heavyweight.

The first time it went something like this.

Them: "Bruno, he was a rubbish heavyweight. People just exaggerated how good he was because he was popular."
Me: "I think it's too strong to say he was awful, he was world champion."
Them: "He was only world champion because he was popular."
Me: "Pardon?"
Them: "The fans awarded him the title."
Me: "You realise he won it in the ring."
Them: "Errr... Oh. I dunno."

*pause*

Them: "He wasn't as good as Lennox Lewis or Mike Tyson."
Me: "I didn't say he was. I was refuting your point that he was awful."
Them: "If they're not as good as Mike Tyson, they're awful."
Me: "What an absurd statement."
Them: "Well, he couldn't have beaten a prime Mike Tyson."
Me: "No, but if you watched their first fight, you'd have seen the Bruno gave a good account of himself."
Them: "You think?"
Me: "He went five rounds at a time most people didn't last two with Tyson, also had Tyson in danger in the first round."
Them: "I remember."
Me: "Then how can you claim he's awful?"
Them: "He didn't beat Tyson, or Lewis. That's why."
Me: "Even the Lewis fight it was his stamina that let him down, he was doing well until he was stopped."
Them: "Naaah. He's rubbish."

I mean, I'm not claiming Frank Bruno was the best boxer in history. But if I went round claiming that every football team that wasn't as good as Barcelona was awful, he'd tell me I was talking shit. But because he can name three retired heavyweights, he automatically assumes that Bruno is the worst boxer ever.

not really a casual fan saying but more a commentator saying that does my head in.
boxer makes a mistake in a fight - "he's shown a lack of experience there" :witzend: - NO its just a bloody mistake!
sure everyone knows who's bad for always saying this

In my old job got chatting to a guy on my break and when he found out I was a boxing fan he mentioned he went to Haye v Harrison at the MEN.

I said " Hahahaha the main event was crap and I knew it was going to be. Did you see Groves v Anderson before it ? That was a quality fight. "

His reply " No we we were drinking before it and we got in just for the main event... and it was over dead fast hahahahaha"

Good guy but that fight would have cost a lot of money for 1 jab :D

had a mate that used to watch fights and regularly declare that he could take the guys on screen, whether it was because they weren't great or they were from lower wieght classes
he couldn't accept that a small man would beat him
his favourite was scott harrison. everytime we watched him he would confidently declare that he'd kill him, look at the size of him.....he wouldn't have a chance against me

best of it was, we called the guy second prize on account of the number of scraps he got in and lost at the weekend.

I watched his fight with McCall today on BN. A good win and a worthy champion. went in with the vest of his generation and only lost to good fighters. and even at that, gave a good account of himself against true greats.

i have also heard people say he didn't have the heart or was a coward.
people clearly mistake being a nice person with being soft. anyone who shared the ring with some of the guy he did deserves great credit.
as you say his stamina let him down at times, perhaps because of his build. but he never lacked courage

You're trying to bait him; I couldn't see it when the others were saying you were trolling him but I can you are; Gomez is alright and he doesn't give it the big n; I think Groves will win and I think Froch is rattled but there are some right tools on CS you could dig at if you really needed to - there are some horrible hateful posts and posters on there - Gomez doesn't deserve it.

I keep telling her about when Piper knocked that fellow out with the first punch of the fight; in about 12 seconds including the count but I can't find it anywhere - she reckons she'd knock him out :witzend:

People saying Frock instead of Froch is annoying, you clearly do not know who you're talking about.

In general though, anyone believing and reciting to me anything from FW newspaper column. They take it as gospel.

Ali is the greatest fighter ever ,never beaten . never decked ,unbeatable .

when people say who did tyson beat other than an old holmes , holmes was considered a weak opponent for tyson at the time but now he's made out to be the best tyson fought .

oscar de la hoya ...he lost his big fights .well he only lost a few because he fought the best fighters out there not cherry picked like many of todays fighters .
