Lightweights: Ken Buchanan vs Julio Cesar Chavez

Seeing the two at their primes, I wonder what would be the outcome on this fight. Buchanan was a master boxer, quick and with a sharp jab. Chavez used to get stronger as the rounds went by and was an underrated technician and extraordinary body puncher.

I don't think that Chavez hit harder than the great Roberto Duran at this weight. Buchanan had an underrated chin and could fight well on the inside exchanges. He only lost one fight by knockout, but in some eyes of the boxing world, was a dubious KO in that controversial historical night with Duran.

The only way Chavez wins this figt is to apply extreme pressure like Duran and Ismael Laguna did, but I do not think that Chavez can apply that amount of pressure. Buchanan was not Edwin "Chapo" Rosario.
My pick is Buchanan. Buchanan with that sharp razor jab and quickness would beat Chavez by decision.

As a Scot I shouldn't be allowed on here but here is my HONEST opinion on this one.

I was a fan of Chavez & Duran was my idol.

However, I have recently sat down an watched that fight in 1972 again & again and still can't see passed Duran.

I don't think it was as easy as people have made out over the years. Ken did put up an incredible performance but was beaten in the end.

Yes I agree Chavez wasn't quite as good as Roberto at 135. But he was an awesome fighterall the same, and his relentless style did wear opponents down, but I don't quite think his style would have worked on Buchanan.

If you can watch Buchanan's fights with Laguna, Navarro, Ishimatsu I would recommend them. Another is his fight with Carlos Ortiz. He made Ortiz quit on his stool after a severe hiding, and this coming straight after his defeat to Duran.

Remember the only time Buchanan was stopped, was against Duran. He had a very durable chin, his hand speed was fantastic.

Yes I'm going to have to take the patriotic stance for once.

At lightweight Julio Cesar Chavez was still in his prime. He would have worn Buchanan down and bloodied and bruised his face and stopped Ken Buchanan.

After studying the careers and strengths of both fighters I’ll take JC Superstar.

Chavez TKO 12 over Buchanan.

I have only seen Buchanan in the Duran fight,BUT i have read a lot about him.I have seen Chavez against everyone and every style.Prime Chavez is AWESOME! But I have to believe the scholars,as well as what was witnessed in the Duran fight,that Buchanan was a special fighter.While I think Chavez would win,I DON'T see him dropping or stopping Buchanan.I see a close(maybe very close)decision for Chavez.

one thing's for sure, Buchanan would have given Chavez far more trouble than Roger Mayweather, Rosario and Camacho. Ken was one hell of a mover, jabbed beautifully, had consistent movement (back in the 15 round days) and was incredibly fit. Buchanan beat a lot of top guys, like Laguna twice, Jim Watt, Ortiz. Ortiz said he didn't think Ken was a fitting l/w champ, so Ken made the old legend quit.

i'd go chavez by close decision.i doubt anyone beats ken easily.

Nobody beats Buchanan easily.

Ken is in my top 12 all time list at 135.

Chavez didn't like movement. Despite his legendary ring cutting skills, he'd find Buchanan hard to find, who was one fornicate of a good mover. He could circle the ring like an ice skater and was one of the fittest, grittiest l/w champs you'll see.

Important to remember Buchanan wasn't your regular pitter-patter fancy dan. He was a stylist who could FIGHT.

The fight would go one of two ways in my mind. The first, Buchanan uses all of his movement and defensive skills to survive a a clear cut decision loss or he actually tries to fight Chavez and get systematicly beat down and stopped late.

Buchanan had a granite chin, though.Look at some of the huge right hands Duran landed on him and yet he recovered from each one instantly.Those punches crushed everyone else at lightweight and even badly staggered Ray Leonard and Davey Moore.

Chavez could turn in some turgid performances, Laporte, Lockridge and Ramirez all ran him very close.If he fights like that against Buchanan he would get outboxed.If he fights like he did against Rosario he would win a clear but competitive decision.
