JC Gomez was a world jr champ in 1990. He then entered the national sr team but had older, more experienced opponents such as Angel Espinosa, Ramon Garbey and Orestes Solano. In the mid-90's he was almost at even terms with Ramon Garbey and Dihosvany Vega. He managed to become cuban champion in 1995 but later lost in the Cordova Cardin tournament and lost his chance to go the Panams and world championships. Then he decided to defect in Germany.
