Behind the ropes - George Groves

Post by forcefraser »

It struck me last night whilst watching Groves behind the ropes on Sky, that he is very uncomfortable with the whole media attention. He looked awkward and like a man who knows that he is going to be exposed on the biggest stage.

Watching him "talk" to Jody Morris was painfull.

The program the night before Froch looked in control, a man who was training like a machine with top quality sparring.

Groves is almost training himself for this fight, whilst Froch`s whole set up looked far more proffesional.

It only convinces me further that Froch is going to hand Groves a very painfull lesson on Saturday night. An industrial beatdown awaits the ginger one.

A tough and talented lad for sure, but not in the Cobra`s league.

I can see what you're getting at. The gym that Groves's is training at looks pretty rudimentary to be honest and the sparring that Groves's has had for this fight doesnt sound great to me. Eubank jnr has been one of his sparring partners right? I dont think his style really prepares you for Froch. I think Froch overall has definietly had the better sparring. I think Barker is a pretty decent sparring partner to prepare for Groves as he has fast hands and feet himself and is a good thinking boxer like Groves is. He doesnt have the power though obviously.

Yeah Jody Morris what charisma.
The butcher skit was strange too .
I get the feeling Booth may appear from the shadows doesn't ring true that George trained there with the lead singer from R.E.M for the biggest fight of your life.
Rudimentary is a good word for it. :salut: columbo
Looked like the place your get your gear on before Dry Slope sking.
It seems without an opponent to counter needle with Groves would be a promoters nightmare.

i think ist just Sky trying to put the Underdog Rocky Feel too it

Froch - Professional Set up and Celebrity Grilfriend Ect sourounded by a team
Groves - Tower block flats , running through the streets , the Butchers and a basic Gym

these programmes are purely for hype , Groves will work like a machine behind the scenes and has had the best of training and Training Knowledge from day one with the haye camp ect

The Tower block is where Dale Youth ABC is. Their roll call of champions has been amazing. Especially in the juniors.

Well it was weird for my money.
So more than likely had the Adam Smith magic sprinkled on it.
Do you think Paddy's hat is a prop?
Dont see how the red carpet treatment at Stamford bridge sits with your Cinderella man theory though.

It`s probably quite daunting, but Groves looks very edgy in front of the camera, like he feels he has to be funny. He doesn`t have a natural air of confidence (read arrogance) that Froch has and this may work against him on fight night.

Being ginger he has most likely been through his share of shit, but this Saturday will be a real test of his gonads. froch has done it before, several times. Groves did handle the Degale night well, but let`s be honest, he scraped through that one and it could have gone either way for me.

Froch is guy who appears to thrive on training and the whole fight atmosphere. He will be more wound up than a priest in a kindergarden.

Do we know who is calling the fight?

I was waiting for the Butcher to toughen his hands up by hitting some hanging slabs of raw meat. Agree with the OP, it was a poor show.

Well spotted Gaz; anyone who thinks that Groves has been sparring the ginger bread and doing a couple of sit ups is beyond gullable, Groves has given absolutely nothing away about his training; I imagine he'll make the step up in class look natural and well timed; there are dozens of boxers who have stepped up into top class out of nowhere and looked like they were born for it.

Good point :TU: I think that Froch has a style that can be devastating on occasion, effective on others and pedestrian at times; I also think that Groves has enough about him to work a game plan and he hits hard enough to get the respect of Froch. I'm really looking forward to it - I think that every punch Froch throws has plenty on it and I think Groves can time him; the age difference is a factor for me though I appreciate Froch doesn't dissipate badly between fights. It's likely that Goves & Co have had their eye on Froch for a good 12 months and will have worked on different things, I also think that Groves being aware that he can be hurt will raise his 'nerves' that little bit - Froch seems to imagine his chin is incredible so he'll not be as bothered about the shots coming in. It should be a good scrap
