Paddy Fitpatrick
Really impressed with this guy last night, Being honest I didnt know a thing about him until Groves but way he carried himself before the fight then after the fight his words are the most sense out of everything. How he wants froch checked before a rematch and hasnt once bad mouthed froch. Also the way he handled the media, the media showed no compassion towards groves in the post fight confrence and as much as Kugan Cassius has his critics they should take a few lessons on how to go about your work when something like this happens. The press were ridiculous getting mouthy with him for asking them a question. Well done to Team Groves and George has a very good set of guys around him it seems:)
Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
I watched the post fight presser and some of the media were really disrespectful to Fitzpatrick and full of self-importance, couldnt believe the attitude they were giving him. To be fair, Fitzpatrick did well to keep his cool, especially after such an emotional night.
Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
I actually thought the opposite and Paddy was a plum giving it look at me during the presser.gasman wrote:I watched the post fight presser and some of the media were really disrespectful to Fitzpatrick and full of self-importance, couldnt believe the attitude they were giving him. He asked a question back to the media, it happens all the time, could have shown a bit more respect.zero wrote:I actually thought the opposite and Paddy was a plum giving it look at me during the presser.gasman wrote:I watched the post fight presser and some of the media were really disrespectful to Fitzpatrick and full of self-importance, couldnt believe the attitude they were giving him. Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
i agree, he butted in when george was asked questions and he still thinks there is a basic standing 8 in pro boxing. If george had wanted 8 he should have taken a knee when in trouble.zero wrote:I actually thought the opposite and Paddy was a plum giving it look at me during the presser.gasman wrote:I watched the post fight presser and some of the media were really disrespectful to Fitzpatrick and full of self-importance, couldnt believe the attitude they were giving him. Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
Paddy is seeking "legal action" tomorrow against Howard Foster.
Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
George was emotional which anyone could see and he was defensive over his fighter and being honest they seem to be very close friends more than a trainer/fighter relationship. George gave the impression to me as if he was in shock and wasnt taking it all in to be fair and he stepped in like any good friend would
Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
I understand that, George was extremely emotional and IMO had the odd dig at Booth bigging up Paddy TBH. Paddy interrupted Hearn, Groves and the press when quite frankly he should have been listening.JamieM wrote:George was emotional which anyone could see and he was defensive over his fighter and being honest they seem to be very close friends more than a trainer/fighter relationship. Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
Is there not something in the IBF rules that states if a fighter is held up by the ropes he gets an 8 count? Admittedly wouldn't count in this case either way.rhino222 wrote:i agree, he butted in when george was asked questions and he still thinks there is a basic standing 8 in pro boxing. Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
There is no standing 8 count in British boxing.
The BBBoC rules state there is a count if the ropes are supporting the boxer and unable to defend himself.
3.32 Should a Boxer go down to the floor as the result of a legitimate blow, the Timekeeper shall count off the seconds strictly in accordance with his watch. The opponent shall retire immediately to the furthest neutral corner and neither Boxer shall resume boxing until ordered to do so by the Referee.
3.32.1 In this Regulation 3.32, “down” shall mean one or more of the following:-
(a) when a Boxer falls from the boxing ring beyond the ring apron as a result of a legitimate blow; or
(b) when a Boxer is on one foot or both feet and at the same time any other part of his body is touching the floor of the boxing ring; or
(c) when a Boxer is supported on the ropes of the boxing ring and, in the opinion of the Referee, is unable to defend himself; or
(d) when a Boxer is in the act of rising
and in all of the above cases, a Boxer shall be considered to be down until he has regained his feet within the boxing ring and is in a position and a condition to defend himself.
3.33 If a Boxer is “down” under the provisions of Regulation 3.32.1(a) he must return to the boxing ring unassisted within twenty seconds. In all other cases mentioned above, he must regain his feet unassisted within ten seconds. The Referee shall not permit a Boxer to continue boxing, if in his opinion he is able to do so, until the expiration of 8 seconds following the knock down.

Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
what was your take on it in the cold (sober!) light of day, mate?
Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
I got back late last night and watched it. If anything, I had it far wider to Groves than I did in the arena but I still stand by it that it was a terrible stoppage. You know me, fairly balanced and not given to conspiracies etc and I just think Howard did what he believed was the best thing at the time.
I said before the fight that Groves would stop him late but I didn't want it like that.
There's a photo on the BBC website that shows Groves sagged on the ropes but I just don't think it was right to stop it.
I mean, we saw Enzo get badly banjoed against Frenkel and I said at the time it was a horrifically late stoppage but I just...I dunno, this was too early, especially for a fight of this magnitude. It wasn't some 5 fight novice in a six threes.

did it look to you like Groves was likely to survive another 80secs of that round?orbtastic wrote:I got back late last night and watched it. Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
Yeah. I think it was a terrible stoppage, however I can see why he possibly stopped it.
It goes back to that Steele stoppage of Taylor all those years ago where he defended his decision by saying that he doesn't care what's on the clock.
It was certainly ungainly.
I also take issue with the scorecards, massively out of line but that's a different conversation.

Very respectful man, although some of his point may have been incorrect (standing 8 count) he seemed honorable and calm/level headed. Respect for how he dealt with the media, who are a rude, corrupt, mid-class, pompous people (in general, there are some good guys, like Tris Dixon)

Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
People keep talking about the 8 count, but Scott Quigg was on talksport with Alan Brazil this morning and he specifically said that in the WBA rules the ref can give a tanding 8 count. Maybe Paddy's not wrong?danconnollyeire wrote:Very respectful man, although some of his point may have been incorrect (standing 8 count) he seemed honorable and calm/level headed. Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
Making a side issue - people saying there is no standing 8 count in pro boxing in the UK... I generally agree with this, but what the heck was Marcus McDonnell doing in the Price vs Thompson rematch?
Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
It's how you perceive the situation with regards to the standing 8 count.. It was very messy and Froch was pushing more than punching. No matter how many times Froch said it he had no free shots Groves was still moving and ducking. He was also throwing back although Froch was clearly pushing and throwing, these are illegal moves in boxing.. As for the standing 8 count Groves was on the ropes so arguably even using BBofBC rules a 8 count could of been given. Groves didn't look dazed. His head wasn't rocked back. It was just a mess and Froch using rough house tactics. I think Froch deserves a lot of credit but I believe he shouldn't of been allowed to take the punnishment he did.. I was saying during the 6th his corner should get him out before he gets seriously hurt. He will in a rematch. Paddy was spot on with what he is saying got to have respect for the guy

Will Groves stay with Paddy for his next fight?
Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
In the post fight fight prezzer George sounded very happy with his entire team and said he wouldn't have changed a thing about his preparation for the fight. I think he'll stick with him for at least the time being.King Tubby wrote:Will Groves stay with Paddy for his next fight?
Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
Paddy should have been telling Groves to box and not get into a slog
If Booth was in the corner this would not have happened
Another side issue might have been that Groves thought he was man enough to win by slogging, hence them parting company
Booth may have wanted him to box on the back foot, with Groves disagreeing

Re: Paddy Fitpatrick
i heard a good story about paddy yesterday , i was training at the fitzroy lodge and the head trainer mark reigate is a old friend and we boxed together many moons ago .he said that a while ago one of his boxers said he was working in a warehouse with this irish guy that reckon he's trained james toney and others in america so mark told the his fighter to get this guy to come to the gym thinking it would be some bloke talking crap . in walks this irish guy in a hat and they start talking boxing for 3 hours and paddy shows him some youtube clips of him on the pads with laila Ali and he looked good . any ways paddy hangs around the gym for a while but the then head coach mick carney(rip) didn't like paddy and basicly told him to get lost so mark introduced him to the next gym down the road which was david hayes /adam booths gym and that is how Paddy met george groves .
mark said that Paddy is a really good guy as well as a good trainer .
