imo froch would of k.oed groves in that round had it been left to go on but dont you think howard foster at times wanted to be the star of this fight? he kept stopping the action whenever froch had stunned groves or hit him with a decent shot, foster is the worst ref ive seen in years the only one that comes close to this clown is joe cortez. froch was trying to justify the stoppage after the fight abit too much like he didnt like groves getting the credit he deserved for his performance in the fight. froch does seem to want more and more credit for him taking shots willy nilly in every fight he fights in.

I said to my so in law, premature finish, the moment I saw Foster. He is known for jumping in too quickly. A world title was at stake not an area title and you therefore have to give both fighters the chance to finish the fight. Foster didnt, he finished the fight and made the decision to step in far too early as usual. In future I dont want to see a big fight if Foster is reffing.

Why do people think froch would if stopped him? I don't at all I think groves would of weathered the storm he wasn't even seriously hurt! If anything I think he was the one that would of got the stoppage late on carls legs were gone after the first round watch his legs ! Yes he buzzed groves but not as bad as he'd been dropped and buzzed severly times

I think Groves was running on empty and had he survived the 9th those last 9 minuites would've been hell.... I think Groves may well have survived that onslaught, but one thing that I do think people are maybe glossing over right now is that the onslaught hadn't ended when Foster stepped in. Yes, it was premature and the action should've continued to flow. Froch had separation, Groves wasn't looking at Froch and Froch was going to keep punching.

I almost feel like people seem to think had Foster not stopped it he would've still stepped in to break the action. If Foster doesn't step in Froch keeps firing and Groves has to find a way to get inside and tie up or keep his guard up and try and ride it, either way he is taking more damage, even if he rides the onslaught. He was in a tough situation and I'd have liked to see if/ how he recovered from it.

Groves made a good few mistakes when hurt. I think had foster not got him in a DDT he'd probably of scatters forward unbalanced & took a count. Where he'd gone from there knowbody knows!! There's no denying froch was getting on top. Groves really shit his bolt in rd 6 beating froch to a pulp & I think it may of been the 7 the he & froch literally accidentally bumped shoulders on the way back to there corners & George's body told the story he was like a blomonge.froch is like Jason! Groves had been put under pressure similar to the ninth round as early as the 3rd round.
So it's not as if it was the first time. He had put Froch down and wobbled him already after Froch had been putting pressure on him.
So people saying Froch would have stopped Groves is going against how the fight had previously gone. Because its more likely Groves would have planted another right hand on an oncoming Froch, and maybe third time, Froch wouldn't have got up??

But we will never know.

That question hasn't been answered.

It's ridiculous to say another twenty seconds and its over.

Based on what?

Groves was buzzed, yes, no more than Froch earlier in the fight.

So my question is if we are giving Froch the benefit of recovering why not Groves?

This is surely based on Froch's history. With Groves we have no idea so I'm amazed everyone is jumping in and saying he was on his way to be stopped. It's based on nothing but Carl's reputation. That's why they fight to find out.

Froch may have done it, may not have. I don't see any evidence in Groves' history to say he could or could not have survived.

That's the whole point of the fight, to find out.

It was a disgraceful stoppage, and you have to say double standards, Froch was more hurt than groves ever was, why does he get the benefit and not groves? Totally unfair.
Good post, I will second all of that.
I think that the BIG difference is that everytime Froch was buzzed, he looked straight back at Groves and went forward. However when Froch unloaded, Groves looked in trouble. When the ref stepped in I dont think Groves knew where he was, and thats why the Ref protected him.
BUT I still believe it was a bit early, and Groves should of been given another 10 seconds.

I seen Froch take three times the punishment Groves did and not once did he turn away or put his head down towards the deck. Groves fans need to look at George's reaction to just a few punches from Carl Froch. He was turning his back and running away on very rubbery legs. I know it's nowhere near certain but I feel Froch was getting on top and going to brutally KO Groves. It took Carl 3 or 4 rounds just to get his legs back but he wasn't n danger of being stopped, despite Groves landing big shots all through the fight. Once he started landing on Groves he unravelled rapidly.

In the rematch, Froch doesn't try to take George out early, doesnt get caught square, doesn't get floored and stops Groves brutally by the 10th round.

I agree with a lot of the other posters and believe Froch would have finished him either within that round or the next. I am starting to come to the conclusion that the biggest loser from the ref jumping in was infact Froch and not Groves.

That's how I see it. Froch is insanely tough and strong. He was starting to knock George around with glancing blows and body weight. Groves had wilted, Froch was coming on strong. Great fight, terrible referee.

Froch looked like he was tiring himself at that point and i honestly do not think he would have finished the fight as strongly as he normally does. He took a lot of punishment and was made to work from the first bell.
I think Groves sometimes looks a bit wreckless when he is under pressure, which makes him loom like he is in more trouble than he actually is. I think he would have survived that onslaught in the 9th and think the rest of the fight would have been close, because as i said i felt that Froch was forced to use the reserves that he normally saves for thr last couple of rounds a lot earlier (between rounds 7-9) and was starting to tire.
But had the fight gone the distance i am sure there would have been even more controversy because the scorecards were an absolute disgrace.

The poll on this is interesting. 66% of us think Froch would have won the fight if it hadn't been stopped and there are some very knowledgeable boxing fans on this forum.

I know one thing. PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT BOXING.

Let's just say the majority of us are right and Froch would have knocked Groves out or forced a more appropriate stoppage. Groves' stock would have gone up, but not as much as it did on Saturday. This way, he has the backing a lot of people and is now an established player on the world stage. If he had been knocked out, then there would be a lot more doubt in people's minds (stamina issues, can be stopped etc).

People are clambering for a rematch now and that includes casual fans and some non boxing fans. If Groves had been knocked out, the fight would not be anywhere near as newsworthy as it is. Hell, even if Grove's had won on points, it wouldn't be this newsworthy.

A rematch solves all the problems, will be a massive event and an easy sell. The stoppage was bad for boxing's reputation, but the amount of interest in the rematch can only be a good thing. A hell of a lot of people would watch Froch-Groves II and hopefully, the fight will be another classic, with a more pleasing ending.

Does anyone know the PPV buy rate? I can't imagine it was particularly high.

They should make any rematch on regular SKY, it's very cynical to have it PPV because demand for it will far out-strip demand for the original card.

Interesting you say 'people are knowledgeable on boxing' in this forum but I was one of the few who said Groves would school Froch, which IMO he did and I disagree with the stoppage. The majority of people on here gave Groves no chance at all and said it was a joke of a fight so I don't think many people on here no sh@t abut boxing. Look back at the threads prior to the fight...not many people on here eating humble pie after the display Groves gave us.

I hope it's on normal SKY channels, but it won't be. Even if the buy rate wasn't great, it'll be huge for a rematch. I know the undercard was very poor and I think Hearn should do what Golden Boy did with the Mayweather-Alvarez undercard. Oscar put Danny Garcia - Lucas Martin Matthysse on the card, just for the fans. A 50/50 fight on the undercard would be just the ticket.

Yes it has, and I did pay Groves his due on another thread. He fought great on Saturday, but I still don't think he can finish the fight in a rematch.

Keith,

I've voted Froch would have won purely based on how the judged were apparently intepreting the fight.

I think Groves wasn't THAT badly hurt - buzzed a bit yes, fatiguing yes.... but then I do remember Degale coming back in the middle /late rounds and Groves having a good 11th/12th - so maybe he would have got second wind.

I think Groves was made to look more hurt than he was cause of the way Froch comes in, it makes you more off balance, plus the head lock from Foster couldn't have helped.... so part of the reason why he aparantly staggered back as he complained. Groves had won (IMO) the first minute of the 9th round (those that think I am foolish then watch it again... its a clear Groves round for the first minute - clear). He was actually having his best round in a couple of rounds. He got tagged, hurt a bit and then way prematurely stopped.

Anyway, enough about the stoppage.... Had Groves gone down he would have been behind on the cards, had he not gone down the fight would have been level. Considering Groves dominated the fight and was only 1 round up on the cards.... he would have needed to have KO'd Froch to get the draw in the last few rounds... and that wasn't happening.

For me - Had Froch won all the other rounds 10-9 - Groves would be champion...... but that wasn't what the judges were seeing - so the "obvious" outcome was that Froch was going to win as I don't think Groves would have KO'd him.

It's mouthwatering. Can you imagine all the rubes lined up to bet on Groves after the mass 'injustice'. The odds will be skewed bigtime.

Yep. Froch learned how to handle him in the last two rounds, when he countered and didn't lead. If he does that from the opening bell.....

There was a right hand in particular that landed high of Groves's head and that really seemed to make his legs go to rubber. Whether you think Groves's was robbed, you have to admit that Froch is one tough bastard as he got hit with some HUGE shots that I think would of knocked most other fighters out cold.
