Tony Anthony

I remember reading once that Tony Anthony, the Light Heavyweight who fought Archie Moore for the title, had a comeback in the eighties and managed to win a world title ( WAA or some other insignificant organisation). Does anyone know the full story?

It's not that easy. I believe it was in either KO or Ring Magazine, they had a segment about the year 1957. Pictured was a scene from the Moore- Anthony fight and the story was told how Moore told his opponent afterwards "Just wait, you'll be champion someday", and how Anthony had won a title some 25 years later when in his fifties.

Tony Anthony fought as an amateur in 1952 under the name of Ernest Anthony. Ernest Anthony was U.S.Amateur champion in the 156 lb. or light middleweight class in 1952. Ernest Anthony must have won at least the New York Golden Gloves and maybe the Eastern Golden Gloves in that weight class in 1952. The reason I say this is because Floyd Patterson was U.S. Amateur champ in the 165 lb. (middleweight) class, and won the New York Golden Gloves as well as the Eastern Golden Gloves that same year.

I just found out, Tony Anthony did win the New York Golden Gloves in 1952. Tony Anthony, fighting under the name of Ernest Anthony (probably his real name), won the Open 147 lb. title in the New York Golden Gloves in 1952. Ernest Anthony also won the National A.A.U. 156 lb. title in 1952.

In 1951, Ernest Anthony won the Sub-novice 135 lb. title in the New York Golden Gloves.

Tony Anthony was a top amateur boxer, and became a top contender in the light heavyweight division as a professional (number 1 in 1958). Of course, Tony Anthony also fought Archie Moore for the light heavyweight title in 1957.

There was another Tony Anthony of Detroit (Kronk) in the 70's-80's. But I do think wouter has a point here...That Ring mag. wasn't so long ago.
