Joe out to put Lacy in his place

Joe Calzaghe will come face to face with rival Jeff Lacy in London's West End on Monday for the official announcement of their new year collision at the Millennium Stadium - and an impressive undercard is taking shape.

But a planned second press conference in Cardiff on Tuesday is off, although Calzaghe is due to cross the Atlantic to meet the American media early next month.

The fight itself, on either February 4 or March 4, will see Newbridge's long-serving WBO super-middleweight champion and his IBF counterpart touch gloves at 2am to fit in with prime time television in the US - reminiscent of the clash between Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno at the old National Stadium - but there'll be plenty to keep fans awake as they wait.

The chief support should involve the long-awaited cruiserweight crunch between veteran WBO boss Johnny Nelson and Swansea puncher Enzo Maccarinelli, as long as both come through their engagements in Italy next weekend.

Pontypool's Celtic welterweight king Tony Doherty is likely to have a rematch with the man he so controversially beat for the title in September, Abercynon's Taz Jones, while a clutch of top Welsh prospects will also feature.

But it seems the planned WBU middleweight bout between Cwmbran's Gary Lockett - also fighting in Rome next Saturday - and Sheffield's Ryan Rhodes is now destined for a different Sports Network bill, probably in the north of England.

It took a lot of hard talking before the Calzaghe-Lacy showdown, postponed from November 5 after Joe broke a hand on the hard head of Kenyan Evans Ashira, was nailed down for Cardiff - and it's not merely about hard cash.

The six-hour meeting in New York between allegedly and Lacy's promoter, Gary Shaw, also covered matters such as the size of the ring and who, given that both boxers are champions, would enter it first.

The Calzaghe camp apparently wanted a 22ft ring, but had to settle for 20ft, while a compromise was agreed over the preliminaries: Lacy will come in first, followed by the Welshman, but the MC will announce Joe before the American.

20ft ring as oppose to 22ft ring, interesting to see the difference requested by both fighters.

Whats the min / max ring size available to fighters in world title match ups?

I think it's between 16 and 24 isn't it?

If Calzaghe wants a bigger ring then surely it suggests that he plans to move alot in the fight? When I'm sure he's said somewhere he'll go straight ahead and blast Lacy out

It makes sense for joe to have the option of running and boxing lacy.... he might try and go for it until he gets tagged then it'll be time to Ottkee Lacys ass.

Plus he hits harder than the opp Lacy has fought and he walks through shots!

Will that work with someone who hits hard enough though?

People say pressure would work with a skilled guy like Joe but when someone mentions pressure with Mayweather they say pressure wouldn't work on a skilled guy like Mayweather.

Way Lacy makes out hios left hook is the best when it's his right that does the job.

I think Joe will come out fast as usual, and look to test the American's chin early.
If Lacy is still standing, or Joe's hands go, plan B will be to box and move, which I guess is the reason for wanting a 22ft ring.

Assuming his legs are still there ( and I thought his legs stiffened a few times against Veit ) I reckon JC wins, early......or late.

Joe Calzaghe's long-awaited super middleweight unification fight with Jeff Lacy will now go ahead in Manchester on 4 March.
Calzaghe, the WBO champion, was meant to face IBF rival Jeff Lacy on 5 November before the Welshman broke his hand while beating Evans Ashira.

That led to a war of words between Calzaghe's promoter, allegedly, and his counterpart Gary Shaw.
But the two boxers are now finally set to meet at the MEN Arena next spring.
The bout will take place at 0200 GMT on Sunday morning to accommodate US television requirements.

"This is the one I have been waiting for, and I can't wait for February 4," said unbeaten 33-year-old Calzaghe, who will be making the 18th defence of his title. My hand will be fine and I'm looking forward to becoming a two-belt world champion. I've always wanted to unify the belts, and now I've got a great chance to do so."

Lacy, 28, also boasts an unblemished record and had demanded that any rearranged fight should take place in the United States.
But the American is now happy to give up home advantage and is confident of notching up his 22nd career victory.

"I've wanted to fight Joe for a long time, and now I've finally got my chance to show everyone I'm the best super-middleweight in the world," he said.

"Joe has been a great champion, but my time has come. There is a new force in the division."

Calazage UD - far faster hands, better pugilist and Lacys power is horribly overated just because he has a ripped body and looks the part. I think Lacy will be exposed as the limitd fighter he is here. Joes face looks pudgy in that pic.
